I really hope no one buys from this seller. For one, the title of the auction makes it sound like he is selling the first copy out of a limited edition of 1500. I am sure that is intentional. It's certainly unethical.Quote:

There seems to be a lot of people putting their copy's of Beggar Prince up on Ebay lately. I haven't ever seen a single Legend of Wukong up though.
I received my copy of Beggar Prince today, and I wonder if anyone could verify something for me.
The owner listed the item as having never been played, but when I chose "Continue" from the main menu, all four save slots had been used. They were all for the same location (a transporter room, apparently). Should those slots have been empty, or did the game ship with these saves?
I am just curious if this seller was being honest. I plan on playing the game, so it's not a huge deal to me if it has been tested or played briefly. Everything appears to be new, though the clear plastic at the top of the front cover has separated from the box and got creased, which I'm not thrilled about.
That's normal; the saves were placed there by us for testing purposes and left there to verify to the customer that saving is completely functional.Quote:

I bought the original BP before I found out about the CDX incompatibility, then bought the re-issue so I could actually save. Bought LoWK because it looked badass...I want Zaku but I can't justify that much for a Lynx game :p

Just finished Beggar Prince. Some thoughts:
Obviously the original programmers did some remarkable work, and the basic gameplay mechanic is creative and unusual (though a bit confusing at first -- I wish the manual had explained it a little better). The localization seems very solid, though the pop culture references rubbed me the wrong way (especially the "All your elders are belong to us" bit) and I caught a few misspellings late in the game.
OTOH, I have to admit that my enjoyment level went up and down. Some of that is due to the encounter rate, but the problem isn't so much that it's too high as that there's nothing you can do about it -- no item or spell you can use to temporarily stop random encounters, no way to teleport between distant locations so that you don't get harangued the whole way. It's super-distracting when you're trying to find your way through a maze, especially because the game has a penchant for adding poor visibility to the mix. It's bad enough getting hung up on walls you can't see, but if you know that the game is counting any attempt at motion toward your random encounter quota, it gets really frustrating. Maybe I've just gotten less patient than I used to be.
Some of the puzzles are also pretty obscure, if not borderline arbitrary. The one that brings up the Blue Dragon comes to mind -- I'm still not sure how I was supposed to know, out of the five choices given, which one I was meant to pick. Certain plot moments could've been better cued, too. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if quick travel were possible, but since it sometimes takes ten minutes to get from Point A to Point B, the wasted time piles up quickly. (I'm thinking of the second time you use the Batwings: to me, the obvious choice was to hop back on the Turtle.)
I saw some graphic glitches, though only one was potentially an issue: when I got a major item (the Trespass Shoes), the game didn't announce what it was and the menu was glitched offscreen. I almost reset, thinking that I'd been screwed out of whatever item it was.
The game also crashed on me a bunch of times (at least six), most of which presented with "ADDRESS ERROR". Mostly it seemed to involve moments with some kind of screen-shaking routine (as in the volcano) or specific special attacks (I think the Spectre accounted for 1-2 crashes). After a while I was able to anticipate the dangerous spots and adjust my tactics, e.g. killing the Spectres first if I encountered a group of mixed enemies. Since my copy is from the third printing, I guess there are still some nasty bugs left in the code, but they can be worked around and never cost me more than 5-10 minutes of progress (at the most).
The battle system is innovative, but also tends to drag somewhat since you're getting hit with X number of attacks no matter what, especially if you're fighting 5-6 enemies. I found myself killing the monsters first that had the slowest animations, just to make it go by quicker.
On a more positive note, the save system works wonderfully, and the game is actually very generous with healing and (when you're indoors) save points. Resuming a saved game is very quick -- if you get killed or hit reset, you don't have to wait through endless splash screens and animations. The instakill puzzles are mostly very fair and navigable. Not much grinding is necessary, though I had to go back and do a little extra grinding before the final battle -- before that, I'd pretty much been fleeing every non-boss battle I could (I finished the game on Level 24).
Overall I'm glad I bought the game -- not just as a collector's item or as a way of supporting the community, but in and of itself. Obviously when you consider the circumstances under which the game was originally produced, it's really quite an amazing achievement, and I'm pleased to be able to experience that.
BTW what was the point of the voodoo magic, anyway? And what about that poor mermaid and her eyes?
Beggar Prince is definitely the buggiest US Genesis game ever released. I could not finish the game because a bug erased my save. I didn't feel like starting back over from the beginning because what if it happened again? I don't trust the game. A friend of mine couldn't finish the game because a bug wouldn't let him get back into the area where he needed to get certain shoes to walk over moving sand. The game definitely was not ready for prime time. It is an embarrassment and very shameful how sloppy it is.
What about Traysia?
Yet it looks FAR, FAR better than ANY version of SFT's artwork for Beggar Prince. The first boxart was just embarrassing, while the more common later version is just plain creepy looking.Quote:
