The Yakuza games feel like a more modern version of what Shenmue should be.

^Indeed. IMO Shenmue on DC would’ve been Yakuza on PS4 if the DC had the power to pull it off. Shenmue was limited by hardware of the era.
Nagoshi added a certain badassery to the formula with Yakuza though.
I had a feeling that someone would bring up that thread I made about Shenmue a few years ago. I didn't play it when it came out. However, I also didn't play a majority of Genesis games when they first came out either, and they have held up far better. I dislike the argument the Shenmue'd greatness lies in the fact that
Its an overambitious game, and boring because of it. Yu Suzuki created a game that mimiced real life to an absolute tee, and forgot to include the reason why people play video games in the first place: Because their lives are dull and boring, and they want a little bit of fun. No one wants to go through a game that has the drudgery of real life as the sole gameplay element, and embody a character who is a total jerk like Ryo. Its just not fun.
Shenmue was revolutionary. But its gameplay failed to capitalize on the aspects on open world games, like Sleeping Dogs, Yakuza, nd Grand Theft Auto IV and V would a decade later, when streamlined, mission driven points kept the game flowing in a timely manner, and keeps the player from wandering aimlessly for hours. Shenmue has way more charm than those games do, better style, and less generic characters. But for the love of God, the gameplay is just not good. 1/2 of the first game leads up to a job as a forklift operator, and then the rest of the game is being that forklift operator!
That's a good idea but would still leave me with the same gameplay. For what it's worth, I picked up Shenmue 2 aiming to give the series another chance since the consensus is that it fixes a lot of the issues I have with the first game, but I haven't got around to playing it yet.
shenmue 2 is a huge improvement unless you play the xbox version.
Both have full voice acting, but the english xbox voice acting is TERRIBLE. if you thought the dub of shenmue 1 was even average, then wait to throw up with shenmue 2 on xbox. it's the worst dub I quite possibly have ever heard in a game. the dreamcast graphics are cleaner and sharper through vga compared to xbox component and most of all, you can't use a shenmue 1 savefile with the xbox version. this completely ruins the point of the game imo. training your moves, acquiring and buying moves you won't have in the xbox version and all the collectibles just to give an example.
listen to this:
and that is one of the leading shenmue 2 characters, others have even worse voice acting than this.
I always thought it was weird how they ported Shenmue II but not the first one, should have just been a double DVD case.
I agree. The writing in on the wall. Thats exactly what I said when I dug up the thread:
It kinda feels like hes not really into this project, and hes being forced to do it by the game industry
But you can the same thing about GTA III and Vice City. The games have no side-missions, no vehicle customization, and you wouldn't believe it, there are loading screens between parts of the map.
Does anyone else think its friggen hilarious how Yu Suzuki has a forklift as his twitter background?: https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp?lang=en
I bought, played and loved both Shenmue games when they first came out and still love them to this day. Hugely ambitious games by Sega that cost the same to make at the time as a big budget movie. As a consequence Sega needed Shenmue to be a best seller but it never really caught the public's imagination or was given the respect it deserved imo. I remember when it was first released I was the only one out of all my friends who owned the game, even though a couple of them had a Dreamcast they just weren't as interested as I was in the concept. Saving up my allowance just to blow it all down the arcade on darts and Space Harrier, asking for sailors in dodgy bars in downtown Dobuita, having forklift races every morning before work...just too many great memories. :p
