Okay, I have to admit, never thought this was ever going to happen. Sometimes, being wrong about something feels really good. ;)

Beyond ecstatic. As many others, I had given up hope a long time ago for a legit sequel like this.
FUND IT.

Oh man, I woke up to this news! I've been waiting fourteen years for Yu Suzuki to finish the story and judging by how it's looking like easily meeting it's target on kickstarter it's gonna happen! I'm gonna have to dust off my Dreamcast and play my copies of Shenmue 1&2 now. I got Shenmue with my Dreamcast back in 2000 and bought the sequel the year after. I'm so glad I've still got my copy of Shenmue 2 cos it's going for crazy money on ebay and after this news it's gonna get even more expensive!
It's fully funded, maybe now we can get some stretch goals. Maybe Quickscifi might have his physical copy after all.
Well, Sega would need to be involved at at least that level since they own the IP. Since it's not a PS4 exclusive I wonder if Sony would still put money into it or if they just gave Suzuki a platform to announce it since Sega doesn't have a big showing at E3 anymore.
At the end of the day $2 Million isn't enough to make a game like Shenmue so I'm guessing someone, be it Sega or someone else, told them if they could raise X amount, they'd invest Y amount.
I'll be honest here -- as I was exclusively into PC gaming at the time, I never played any of the Shenmue games and looking back, they seem really hard to get into these days. When the news broke, my first thought was that there will be some massive disappointment, as -- to me -- it seems to be pretty much impossible to make a game that exudes the exact kind of charm that the Shenmue games do in this day and age.
But seeing as this is a Kickstarter, this might just be the real deal. No need to target as broad a demographic as possible might just lead to a game that will deliver a similar experience with a slightly prettier coat of paint and better controls.
So yeah, even not really being a fan, I'm kind of excited.
I'm kinda surprised with how bad their kickstarter video is (not the E3 one, the one on the kickstarter page).
But shenmue sells itself.
Reading the kickstarter information, looks like Shenmue is in a situation more or less the same of Toejam & Earl. The franchise is owned by Yu Suzuki, but the first 2 games are Sega's property.
The true question is, how Yu Suzuki is involved with Sega these days, since he is not employed by them anymore.
Yu Suzuki said in an Interview last year (http://shenmuedojo.net/new/extras/interview1114.html) that Sega would likely publish a Third Shenmue if he provided the funding. So I guess Sega will still serve as some sort of publisher on this.
Or this of course. Seems very likely, in fact.
no since this morning shenmue 1 and especially shenmue 2 prices for dreamcast have skyrocketed on ebay.
I don't get how publishers look at projects like this and think... eh, pass. Kickstarter is too small time for projects like this, or Yooka-Laylee. These games need to be mass produced and advertised for because they have potential to be a big success.
this also has to be the best news for sega fans since the announcement and release of the dreamcast. it certainly is for me!
I don't think it's the same the case at all. In the announcement trailer can clearly see standalone "@SEGA" copyrights for both Shenmue and Shenmue II footage, and then a "Original Game@SEGA @YS.NET" for Shenmue III footage itself. With ToeJam & Earl it's different, the original games were all trademarked by "@SEGA" copyrights but also by "@JVP/ToeJam & Earl Productions" copyrights (that means, both parties have to sign a deal to bring back those games, so they can't do it each on their own), and the most important, a remark that "ToeJam & Earl is a tradermak of ToeJam & Earl Productions" which is the global license after all and that's what allows the original creators to create a new game by themselves and without needing the presence of Sega by any mean.
In this case, this is more similar to what has recently happened with Bayonetta 2. The global traemark/license is still Sega's complete property, and so the complete rights for the games that were created under their moniker. What has probably done Sega is licensing the rights of Shenmue III to YS.NET, probably through a significant paid amount, so the latter can create the game and assume its expenses and revenues. Sega still appears as a trademark owner, but the whole Shenmue III product is under exclusive YS.NET's duties through some sort of legal agreement. As I said, pretty much what happened with Bayonetta 2 with Nintendo.
So that means the likelihood of Shenmue 1 & 2 being included are basically zero. Shame. HD ports of each would of been excellent.
Like I said, I've never played the series but I just love the massive joy everyone got from it. Knowing you waited 14 years for the missing chapter of a great storyline.

I expected it to be fully funded quickly, but this is nuts!
I doubt Yu Suzuki has only the Kickstarter as a source for money to this project. $2 million should be spent just to design the packaging of a third Shenmue game, hehe.
The image with the Stretch Goals suggests there's more to come after the $4 million mark is reached. Let's see what kind of info comes after the Kickstarter campaign ends.
I think another reason why we won't see a re-release of Shenmue I & II is because of how congested it is with stuff either relating to or inspired by Sega
As far as I understand it, SEGA owns the first two games but Suzuki owns the rights to the property itself.
Yu would need SEGA's cooperation to reproduce them.
Sony revealed they are helping fund the project
Sony Are Helping Create Shenmue III
I never thought this would happen.
Thank baby jesus for a PC version. I'm not ready to buy a PS4.
It makes all the sense IMO. Thanks for the link.Quote:
Corsi also added the Shenmue III Kickstarter was meant to gauge fan interest, not fund the entire game. This makes complete sense, given that the Kickstarter was asking a mere $2 million in funding.

Oh, the Evil Sony.
The updated Kickstarter FAQ answers some questions raised in this thread and hints at physical release for the PS4 outside the Kickstarter IMO:
Quote:
FAQ
Will there be an Xbox/Wii U/Linux/Mac version for Shenmue 3?
Currently we are planning development only for PC (Windows) and PS4. Other platforms have not been decided yet.
Will there be a physical copy reward for PS4?
The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter will only be offering the digital download version for the PlayStation Network.
Is this game affiliated with SEGA?
SEGA has officially given us the rights to use the "Shenmue" license.
Are there plans for the HD versions of Shenmue 1 & 2?
The property rights for Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2 belong to SEGA, so we are not in a position to comment on that.

C'mon, please don't act like they're making you violate your moral code by not offering a physical copy. I sort of understand the mindset, but it's silly to complain about that in the wake of the announcement. There will be more/other stuff to horde in the future.
You sound upset. Can I offer you one of these?

no surprise here. sony was already testing the waters last year hinting at unused ip's like shenmue and now they smell the success. let's hope it sells so well we get shenmue 4 and 5 too and it really kicks current sega in the balls

Shenmue HD has been available for years now :p
They just mentioned Shenmue III along with the Last Guardian on Al Jazeera America, so it's now getting decent mainstream coverage, but they failed to say that it's a kickstarter based game
The Shenmue Kickstarter just passed the 3 million mark, sets Guinness World Record for quickest video game crowdfunding.

“If Shenmue 3 was going to get made, I wanted to make it with the fans,” wrote Suzuki on the campaign’s website. “Through Kickstarter, I knew that could happen. Together, with Shenmue fans everywhere, I knew we could build the game that the series deserves.”
