That's the only way to play it, IMO.

So I take it I'm one of the few who haven't really played or even watched gameplay of Shenmue.
All I know it from is Mega64's skit (speaking of which, Rocco was stoked too, too bad there's no live reaction )

For those not getting the first part. He pretty much has been hyping up Last Guardian for every E3 since it was announced.
I played the entire first game in japanese, before the international release, and the voice wasn't much better.
Mark's voice, particularly, fits much more with the character in the japanese version and he even speaks some lines using a perfect english (really!). But, in general, the expressiveness of the voice actors is still poor.
I don't know how the original voices of Shenmue 2 are, however.
^All I know is, by the X-Box release, the English voice acting wasn't quite as wooden.
I'm not sure what I think of this to be honest. I was into the first couple of games back then, but nowadays they're just really not my kind of thing.
This Eurogamer article helps clear things up a tiny bit more:
Quote:
Speaking to Eurogamer's Oli Welsh last week, Sony's president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida provided a little more clarity on the relationship. "I cannot talk about the specifics of the deal, but I can talk about the set-up," he said. "It's the third-party relations team's work. They've been supporting many indie developers - you've seen Adam Boyes or Shahid Ahmad showcasing indie developers over the last few years. When the third party relations team identifies some great indie game being developed they strike a deal so it comes on PlayStation first on console, or something like that.
"There's a variety of ways of support, including financial support. When the game's not being funded at that point, the developer has to come up with some funding themselves, for third party relations team to help - because third party relations is third party relations - if we fund the project then it's first party! It's my job! There's a great difference. If Suzuki's Kickstarter is successful [and very quickly after our conversation it was], SCEA will add funding and other support."

Things have slowed down considerably. But then again that's Kickstarter for you.
Usually a big push at the beginning and then again near the end.
When all is said and done I reckon they'll be able to top that 5 mil mark.
Penny Arcade even did a comic on this news. Didn't find these funny recently, but this one kinda made me smile ;)

If you track Bloodstained's progress on KickTraq versus Shenmue III's progress, BS was doing a little bit better than SM3 is at the same point in time, due in large part to running a AAA world-class Kickstarter campaign. But it's not like they were cracking 100k every single day either.
I gotta say thought that I'm frustrated with the team running the SM3 campaign - they're just not very engaged with the current discussion/panic going on in the comments and have been way too quiet on the updates front. When they do update, it's usually about something off-topic that's totally unrelated to the concerns of the backers.
Things that would seriously help:
-Send out daily updates and directly engage the commenters - this is where they've really dropped the ball...this plagued the Pier Solar HD campaign as well. Better to update frequently and say less than to not update at all...
-Allowing for PayPal donations or at least acknowledging the request (Bloodstained used PayPal outside of KS to great benefit)
-Adding more tiers - once you get past the $200 mark there are pretty big jumps in funding. Needs some in-between tiers
-Better cadence of smaller stretch goals - once the subtitles goals got blown through, the gaps got way bigger, to the tune of $500k-ish. Bloodstained had $100k-$200k stretches, so they were hitting one every other day. Made for an engaging campaign
I still think they'll hit the $5 million mark at the end, but unless some major changes happen (i.e. announcing PS4 physical release or XB1 as a platform) I doubt they're going to come close to the $10 Yu reportedly wants.
Yeah the Shenmue 3 campaign is just... well... terrible.
Wtf are those stretch goals, wtf is that video, wtf is with the tiers, wtf is with the communication. They pretty much did everything poorly. All of the success comes from the name alone.
Also, you have clickbait journalists complicating things. I noticed ever since the negative articles about Sony's involvement started appearing online, the progress has slowed down severely.
that and the fact many people see that the 2M requirement has been met and they are all meh on contributing an already successful campaign.
This and knowing the game will be done no matter how many new contributions are made. Maybe people are like, what, am I giving my money to Sony or what?
You're funding a hopefully expanded game at this point, along with securing additional exclusive rewards depending on the tier you pledge to.
It's really that simple and anyone trying to fear monger up some bullshit is doing just that.
Can't really blame them when the stretch goals are crappy sidequests (with no context).
No physical release tier or stretch goal, no Linux/Mac release or stretch goal... I can't even understand that considering they use the Unreal Engine, where compiling to another OS/system is a press of a button way. Ridiculous really.
Thanks God for the fans
I personally would've backed it for a lot more than $100 if the rewards made up for something more tangible. Which, I'm sorry to say, past getting your name on the credits and a hard copy for the PC, I don't see how I can fathom pledging anything more for now.
My next tier would have to be the $500 one, where I'd get all 4 toy capsules, a signed poster and a hard copy of the soundtrack. Still, that's an extra $400 and I don't even see getting, both, a hard copy for the PC and a digital for the PS4; let alone getting a hard copy for the PS4. Which brings me to my reasoning: Might as well just stop at $100 and get myself a digital version for the PS4 when it comes out.
And this is just me. So I can imagine where all the lost opportunities for revenue have gone by now. I am as excited to get this game to where it needs to be; but at the same time I don't want to see myself ending up down $500 with a bunch of pointless knick knacks and the game ending at below the $5 million pledge where, as Yu has mentioned, would need to reach a minimum of $5 million to fully realize his dream (not to mention $10 million to make it as open world as the previous ones were).
I cannot speak for everyone out there (even though I keep reading hundreds of comments stating the same on the kickstarter project), but I know that if there was a physical copy for a home console, not only would it gather more backers, it would have already-existing backers such as myself pledge for more, a lot more.
I was a little disappointed that the survey they posted didn't have an option for PS4 hard copy. They've been a little slow to answer popular questions, but this one has been there from the launch of the Kickstarter. It's really hurting their ability to secure additional funding.
FYI:
Yu Suzuki will be doing a Twitch stream tomorrow Friday, June 26 at 7:00PM PDT
(Saturday, June 27 2:00AM GMT). On a side note, it was really nice to see a few SEGA-16 members participate in the recent Yu Suzuki reddit. I noticed Trekkies and the TheSonicRetard exchange a few words regarding the kickstarter.
Anyways, mark it down on your calendar!
I participated but my questions didn't get answered. I asked non-Shenmue questions.
It's been more than 3 days and still stuck at 3.6 million. I need an incentive to put down more money.
I wonder if the bullshit press has taken it's toll, if it's the natural activity curve on a Kickstarter, or if we've reached the limit of the Shenmue franchise.
It's hard to tell at this point.
The new rewards are a joke. They asked how much more would we give for a replica of the dragon mirror, or a real version of Lucky Hit from the game, instead they just added new rewards beyond the $500 mark to act as donations more than anything else.
$1000 vintage crap bag
$2000 another vintage crap bag
My message to them was answered. No plans to release a PS4 hard copy.
We have gotten way past the veil of bad publicity. I think it's clear there are zero fans out there who think Sony is backing this up the rest of the way. I don't see how they're going to reach $10 million on their own the way they are going. It is without a doubt what is missing is a simple physical PS4 copy.
Over 20,000 comments now. And when they are not praising that the game is being made, they are asking for a physical copy.
Heck! Even the ones who don't care about a physical copy are asking for one. As I write this post, this person comments:
This is transparent and everyone sees it. So I doubt Yu and the rest of the devs are not seeing it. Right now, all we are going to get is one third of Shenmue III. Based on the stretch goals, this needs $10 million to provide only 2/3 of Shenmue 3.Quote:
While I personally don't care about a physical release on PS4 or a release on other platforms. Please please please Suzuki-san GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT. That's the only way the kickstarter will be salvaged at this point. I don't know about anybody else but Shenmue is more than just it's story
Suzuki has commented and acknowledged the physical PS4 release request. He said he's looking into trying to make it happen.
I know he has. My point is that 19 days are left and sooner is better than later. As Yu himself has stated,
Quote:
There is no prize for coming late to the duck races. This is the big chance to give what we love to everyone around the world!
Yeah, I'm excited for part III, but the specifics of this whole thing need to be crystal clear.
if Sony is shelling out some money after it reaches a particular breaking point... then that point needed to be set and communicated crystal clear to everyone.
If they are NOT going to have any involvement, then they really need to make that clear and open it up to the XB1 as well as the PS4/PC. They need to get a lot of exposure for the money. And if 10 million is what they needed, that should have been the kickstarter goal from the start.
Yes!
Corey Marshall is returning to voice the English version of Ryo Hazuki.
PS4 physical copy is now official.

Finally... least they are listening to fans, if not a little slowly.
Pledged for the PS4 copy. I don't have a PS4 yet, but I'll have it eventually. I have Shenmue 1 and 2 already, so was never not going to get this.
Finally!
Now I can justify pledging more than $100 on the game.
And it's coming inside a nice sleeve. ooooooooohhh.
Only a child would think the images shown of the products are the actual versions.
Thanks ;)
I'm just hoping it looks decent. I'd rather have a good looking case with no sleeve than an average sleeve with an average case.
I'd be sorely disappointed if it winds up looking cheap.
