Sega-16's Top 100 Genesis Games of All Time

I've been trying to do this for a long time as a project for the main site here but for whatever reasons we could never come to terms to make it happen. I have decided to make it my own personal little forum project. I want you to send me a list of your favorite Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X games ever made. I will compile the results and put together a top 100 countdown here in the forums. Here are the rules for your list:

• There is a maximum limit of 100 for your list, but there is no minimum. You can send a list of your top 100, 50, 25, 10, whatever you can do. You can't list 100 favorite Genesis games? That's no problem, send a list of whatever you can. Your maximum is 100, there is no minimum.
  
  
• Games rankings on the official list will be determined by a point system. Games will be given points depending on your rankings. The number of games you list will determine how many points your games get. If you send in a list of 100, your #1 game on the list will get 100 points, #2 will get 99 points, #3 will get 98, so on and so on until your #100 game gets 1 point. If you send a list of 20 games, your #1 will get 20 points, #2 will get 19 points and so on and so on until your #20 will get 1 point.
  
  
• The countdown is for Sega Genesis games, Sega CD games, and 32X games, all can be included on your list.
  
  
• Sonic 3 & Sonic & Knuckles should be listed as 1 game.
  
  
• Pier Solar is eligible. Anything that was released in physical cartridge/CD and is playable on a Genesis/Mega Drive/CD/32X is eligible. Games that were not released in physical cartridge/CD form will not be eligible.
  
  
• This is not exclusively just North American releases, this is for any game released worldwide. For different versions of games like Bare Knuckle 3 vs Streets of Rage 3 If BK3 gets 10 votes and SOR III gets 5 votes, it will tally together for a total of 15 votes(and however many total points), but BK3 will be the representative, same goes for Sonic CD us vs Sonic CD Japan, etc. Be sure to vote for your favorite version of the game.
  
  
• For compilations: If it is a compilation of games that are not released individually on the Genesis, it will count as one game. Mega Man and the Wily Wars for example is indeed eligible to be on your list(as one game, Mega Man 2 on it's own for example will not be eligible). Compilations of games that are on the Genesis in individual form will not be eligible, for example, the 6 Pack will not be eligible.
  
  
• For games with multiple ports across Sega CD, 32X, and stock Genny/MD all votes for all versions will be added into the same total. If say for example 10 people vote for regular Genesis version of Ecco, and another 12 people vote for the Sega CD version, the total for Ecco will be 22 votes, but on the final list the CD version will represent because it got the majority votes. I will specify in the countdown which versions got how many votes.

• Deadline to get the lists in is July 25th. Take your time and put some effort into it. You've got all month. Countdown will start in the beginning of August and will be real fancy, I promise. :cool:

It's been well over a decade since I've confined myself to thinking of gaming platforms in terms of single regions. There's no way I could make a top 100 list knowing games like Undead Line, Super Fantasy Zone, (Tengen) Marble Madness, etc must be excluded.

I'm also wondering about Sonic & Knuckles. I'm starting on my list and I have it written as "Sonic 3 & Knuckles". Otherwise, I'll just add both separately.
I also want to know if unreleased games count. I'm just going to assume the answer is no.

Whenever I do these, I tend to think more console exclusive(or at least what isn't on a competing hardware manufacturers consoles anyway)

Some good questions. I'm going to make it official, Sonic 3 & Sonic & Knuckles should be listed as 1 game.

Worldwide for sure.

Pier Solar is eligible. Anything that was released in physical cartridge/CD and is playable on a Genesis/Mega Drive/CD/32X is eligible. Games that were not released in physical cartridge/CD form will not be eligible.

I will edit this into the OP when I get some time tomorrow.

For games that were ported over to CD or 32X, the version of the game that gets the most votes will be the version that makes the list. If the Genesis version of Ecco gets 10 votes and the CD version gets 12 votes for example, the CD version will represent.

This looks like a quick and fun task! And best of all, it will encompass international releases! I'll make sure to message my list before mid-month!

This sounds like fun, I don't have the time to do it right now, but I'll make a list soon.

Nice project! And good choices (if allowed, Mega Games 10 would top any list). I don't agree that much with you S3&K choice as it will rocket it up to #1 spot for sure. There were two separate games sold at different times and were never released in 2-in-1 form anywhere, but hey it's your project.

So no Meganet games I guess... that's ok. How about unlicensed games? Pier Solar isn't licensed by Sega that's for sure. What about pirate games, Super Fighter Team's, etc ?

I'm guessing if you are allowing 32X & CD games, you also allow japanese & european exclusives, right? Wise decision IMO.

The Ecco example is a good one: MD game isn't going to make it to the list when it's one of the best games on the system, but hey you must avoid excessive CD vs cart redundancies. Maybe you should annotate these things when compiling the list (things like "also exists on MD", "japanese exclusive", etc).

For reference, there's a nice list made by Barone on my somewhat failed but very formative attempt to do a 200ish game list here.

Also are we expected to rate a game taking the year of development into account or not? What about ports? I guess we have to decide on our own. Again congrats for the initiative.

Also it would be nice to establish a list with the 100 best noted games on the site's reviews, even if we'd strongly disagree with some of them, just for reference. I don't know if an ordered list can be generated from the site, though

I don't think you need to overthink this chilled, the idea is that everyone picks their favorites and through sheer volume of data we'll reach a conclusion :p

Also yes, Sonic 3 & K will most likely win. It's meant to be a single game (that was released on two cartridges), so I'm ok with that. R-Type for the PC Engine came out on two separate carts with separate stages, but it's 1 game.

Unlicensed games are ok.

I'll follow your advice Kamahl... but with the inclusion of the 32X, I'm already at 85 with almost no CD games and just the MD essentials, leaving behind a lot of gems, very hard to downsize. Also I think it'll be very convenient for many people in this forum to leave sports games out of this, as if they were all crap just by being sports games. I won't do that.

Rattled down a list of my favorite Genesis games from the top of my head, came up with 104 titles, so that should be a good start ;)

I'll try sorting the games from 1-100 then (sure won't be easy). Let's see if I can sort them by the time the deadline rolls around.

If you don't have Alien Soldier, then you don't know real blast processing.

I'm not sure the scoring is fair : it encourages to fill the list with whatever comes to mind in order to have the first games high scored.
