I'm wondering because my 20 inch CRT TV only has S-Video input at best
Nope. SCART cables are (normally) only RGB and/or Composite Video.
That box converts Component Video (YPbPr) to S-video and Composite Video. RGB and YPbPr are not the same.
Make a converter using the Sony CXA chip or some other transcoder .
Are we talking with regard to converting RGB to S-Video as far as hooking up your consoles are concerned?
If so, at one time I had the same issue with the only working CRT that I had only had composite and s-video.
As I say I'm not sure this is relevant to this discussion, but with regard to getting s-video out of my stock Genesis/CDX, I bought one of these on the cheap.
It takes the RGB from the Genesis and converts it to S-Video.

I wouldn't even bother with SCART, just use composite.
Woops. I just realized there's a typo in my topic title. I'm getting the HD Retrovision component cables for the Genesis 2 and a box that converts Component Video (YPbPr) to S-Video is what I want. I just want to make sure if it actually works and if it does the job well.
That's a really neat converter box, thanks for sharing that. I'm guessing they aren't too easily found are they? And are pricey as well I'm betting. I used to talk smack on CRT TVs on here before but I've grown to really like my 20 inch CRT TV that I've found on the curb. The picture quality and lag-less control input really has me hooked on using it. And to think it was going to be thrown into a landfill :) Only two issues with it however, no component input and no audio output for headphones, which sucks because I have a Genesis 2 and not 1. I prefer the Genesis 2, easier to replace the AC adapter, I like the look of it and it's just more compact.
I do for now but my Genesis 2 has a Samsung encoder so the composite video is rather poor with jailbars. It doesn't look that bad on the CRT, especially since it's only 20 inches. Nonetheless I still would like to take advantage of S-Video on it like I can do with my Super Nintendo. I have the good quality S-Video multi-out cables too, the ones that don't have a composite cable on it like on those universal ones you find at GameStop. And yes I am aware that Samsung video encoders have no S-Video capability so all the more reason to find this converter, unless I swap out the encoder. I don't want to get rid of this particular Genesis 2 either, since it is a VA2.3 with a discreet YM2612.
EDIT: I found the XMD-3 ANALOG RGB /S on ebay, $183.04 however  so no thanks
lol had no idea that's what they go for now.
Yeah at that price point it's madness to even consider it.
It does work great, though.
This is a comparison I did quite a while back.
Via composite,

S-Video via that XMD device,

Mind taking some pics of the inside? mainly the board front and back and chips it uses.
No his converter box.
We're talking about 6-7 years ago now so can't remember exactly, but it certainly wasn't "$183.04"
BTW, I noticed similar converter devices (XMD-1) in that eBay listing you linked to. I see those are a bit cheaper but I'm not sure whether they carry S-Video (I'm thinking only RGB).
And they're probably only compatible with the Model 1 Genesis/Mega Drive.
Why I mention this is because mine specifies compatibility with the Model 2 Genesis but does also work with the Model 1.

I just took a quick pic. Hope it helps.

Pretty much what I was suspecting, it's the Sony encoder found in many Genesis systems. I was hoping it was something different but oh well.
You want something different? :p
There's a "Towns Mode" at the back. Hell if I know what that's for.

No idea what it's for either as looking at the back of the pcb I don't see that switch.
