Crusader of Centy - WTF!?!

Hello!

So, I've been playing Crusader of Centy on the Mega Everdrive, and I've decided: I've got to get this game. Off to eBay I go...

...Holy Hannah.

The CHEAPEST is $190 bucks for a cartridge only ripped label version of the game. A complete version? FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY US DOLLARS.

I could get a PlayStation 4 for that. I could get a Neo-Geo home system WITH a game for that.

Is this game game truly that in demand??? I only see 3 copies of it right now on eBay, so I'm assuming that it is legitimately somewhat rare.

The term 'rare' is truly a con-word if there ever was one, it's more of an excuse than subtitle for the unreasonably expensive prices that sellers believe their game to be worth.

Stick with your flash cart and enjoy the game because once you've beaten it you probably won't be revisiting it. These auctions have become one great illusion, best you can do is not buy into it...

I remember liking that game over 20 years ago. I paid like $10 to rent it for a week. I had an opportunity to buy it once or twice while it was still largely ignored, but I chose other games. $200? Huh. Thats about as much as Neutopia II for the Turbo has been going for lately. Those are pod 6 prices. Why do we even have a pod 6? Total suck pod.

This is one of the highest ticket items for the Genesis, probably largely due to the fact that the Internet has blown it up as the "Zelda" of the console. It's an uncommon game but the prices are extremely unreasonable.

MUSHA is another Genesis game that has gone up hundreds of dollars in the last five years or so.

The Splatterhouse games are climbing steadily as well though they haven't broken $100 a piece yet.

It's hard to really point fingers at anyone other than collectors themselves for the state of these prices, since people keep paying them.

It's ridiculous nonsense like this that forever drives people to seek other solutions. The problem ramped up when a bunch of trust fund kids found that "retro video games" earned people "nerd cred" without all of the bad crap that came with actually being a classic game aficionado when the games were new. They would pay ANY price for classic games and hardware, because they had no concept of the value of a dollar. You can't really fault the sellers for running headlong into that gold rush. A fool and his money are soon parted. Even my own emergency funding plans include selling most of my more valuable games. Thankfully, this is dying down a bit with the NES, and it seems that the Genesis and SNES never really had the eye of the hipster quite like the NES did, so maybe a bullet dodged? Still, if you want to know the real value of something on ebay, look for SOLD RESULTS. Yeah, someone can ask a hundred dollars for a glass of water, but you can get one at Burger King for nothing.

For what it's worth, it's not so good a game.
I mean it's ok but it just didn't catch me as a really good rpg like I wanted it to be.
Nowhere near what their asking for it.
You can buy many good Rpg's in far better condition for that much.

Yeah. Definitely some bizarro prices for M.U.S.H.A. as well. As for Centy, you're probably better off kicking back with Landstalker or Legend of Oasis and a six-pack of Mingus Dew.

I don't know, the NES is on the rise again especially for some more obscure titles that have gained popularity in recent years. The Genesis is really just starting to get attention. Years ago there was no difference in the value of loose and complete Genesis games but now it's a huge difference.

The SNES is the most absolutely absurd of the three. Starting a SNES collection today is asking for an empty wallet.

The N64 has also just started a meteoric climb. My N64 auctions from a few months back went nuts. Super Mario 64 even went for over $30 and Super Smash Brothers for $50. That's just nutty.

Crusader of centy is actually more rare then Musha. I'm not sure it demands the current market value but it is a rare and a good rpg on the genesis.

Genesis is now getting attention because the market for retro Nintendo is dying. We're not in the times when you're going to come across a lot of pristine in box NES or SNES games for below market value any more. Those are the truly rare sightings nowadays. It's like someone finding a rare golden age comic book that's worth a lot. While it still happens its not as often you hear stories about them.

Genesis collecting probably will become a trend. Who has it good are atari collectors. You don't have a high demand for them and not many people even bother looking at them when they come across them.

I have been not just playing but focusing on collecting since about 2006 and just recently jumped on the bandwagon for focusing on genesis. I actually acquired a massive CIB collection for peanuts that got me way ahead of the game. But even now when I target single games I'm after I tend to focus and prioritize with Genesis as I believe the market is still decent for collecting. As someone else mentioned collecting SNES right now would be really expensive if you're just getting into it, even if only going for carts. Going for CIB you're spending some serious cash.

Yeah, this is how I saw it.

Thing is, I've kind of had it ingrained in me that if I like it, I should buy it - the EverDrive has been a godsend for that. It lets me see how the game actually looks and plays on real hardware, and I'm able to try out games that I never played (or heard of, for that matter) like Red Zone, or Zero Tolerance. I have most of the games that I wanted on the system, and even paid stupid amounts for ones that I had, got robbed, and had to re-buy, like Alisia Dragoon and Ghouls n' Ghosts.

But then there's the games like Mutant League Hockey, El-Viento, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. They're $100+ dollars, and... well I just don't want to pay that for ANY Genesis or Super Nintendo game. That's Neo-Geo territory at that point.

Neo Geo territory is literal insanity. As in, buying games only to destroy them, to increase the value of one's existing collection? All I can say is, thank goodness for flash carts, mod chips, and emulation, so everyone at least has some means of you know, PLAYING the games.

I would say, try and import the UK/Euro version called "Soleil", but even that too has jumped up in price.

Well there's a us copy on there for £30 buy it now. Seems alright to me. I take that back!!!!! Wtf!

Game comes with a European Shell so it will fit in the standard UK console.

Centy has been expensive and in-demand for several years now. I've passed it up in the wild twice over the years. Once it was CIB for $60 about 4 or 5 years ago, but I passed. Saw it CB for 50 about a year later and passed again. I'd say that I'm kicking myself over those decisions now, but those prices were really the average value at that time, and I didn't really have a desire to buy the game at even that price.

Good game and all, but not for 50-60 bucks...and certainly not for the ridiculous amounts it goes for now. If you're dying to spend hundreds on a Sega game, get MUSHA or Snatcher. I think you'll be much happier with your choice.

I like to think another reason for it's demand is that it was made by Atlus, now owned by SEGA.

It was only published by Atlus in North America (Sega elsewhere, hence the Sonic cameo). The game was developed by Nextech who were also responsible for Ranger X.

It's a shame Sega didn't publish it in the US, it might not have been as uncommon.

As a lover of RpGs and Sega.......I must say that sega didn't have many good RPG's.
The only two I can think of are both Lunar games.
I know a lot of people like PS but to me they just suck as far as RPG's go.

As a reseller who has ruined the market I regret not holding on to mine longer. I recall getting $70 complete with a somewhat beat up box like 5 years ago. I payed like $20 for it in the early 2000s. I really liked that game but for that much I'll take the cash. I hit a point where it was like "Why do I have three boxed Chrono Triggers sitting on my shelf collecting dust when crazy people will give me a crap load of money?"

I'm the opposite, what drew me to the original Phantasy Star was the first-person dungeon stuff. I wish they kept it for the later games. Phantasy Star II's dungeons might have an overhead viewing angle, but it's Wizardry influences are still on it's sleeve. I also respect Shining in the Darkness's powerful Dungeon Master-style karate, but I'm stuck in the 80's.

They just remind me of Ultima Exodus where the game is ok but the dungeons suck so badly I can't play it.

I got a legit seller here in Germany who's offering a complete copy of the German language version of "Soleil" for 32€ (he's holding a sale right now, normally it goes for 42 or so). I always felt he was kind of a price gouger, but his stuff is original (no repros), and looking at the prices posted in this thread, he now suddenly appears to be rather reasonable.

I bought the game about six years ago and forked over 20 bucks for it. Back then I felt it was unreasonably expensive; now it feels like a solid investment.

Just get Ragnacenty. Same game, better case and artwork, for far, far less money. I don't see the inability to read the bit of text in the game harming the experience as it would, say, Panzer Dragoon Saga when going with the cheaper import over inflated Western releases.

Prices don't raise into the hundreds if collectors aren't willing to pay those prices. Loads of people put stuff online at insanely inflated prices and that stuff doesn't sell.

But when it does, don't blame the re-sellers for taking advantage of idiots. Blame the new wave of impatient collectors who will pay any price to get what they want.

For me personally, I think it's alright. The story is a little too out-there for me and I'm not that big on how the animal buddies work. It's a solid action adventure game but it's not one of my favorites. I wasn't aware there were any haters really.

I felt Centy introduced enough of its own elements to be original, first rate clone to LTTP at worst but I never felt it was as blatant as say Neutopia or Neutopia II.

Being able to jump and platform was liberating but it is the animal combination system that made it interesting; I really enjoyed the puzzles where it relied on that mechanic (butterfly sword for switches, armadillo for buttons, etc.)

I loved Link to the Past, it's probably my favorite SNES game but that doesn't take away the experience of Centy - it was solid despite being a bit short, convoluted in story and narrative, underwhelming with the final boss, whatever - it was quirky, fun and Sonic is in it so that immediately makes me giddy.

Yeah I agree, new dumbass buyers are to blame for falling for it, but those of us who aren't dumb are still getting shafted by artificially increased prices,; maybe not in the hundreds, but certainly by smaller increases in the 50+ range which don't go down. It's getting ridiculous. I take my hat off to anyone for duping a moron, but let's be real here - it's still damaging the market in the process. Other sellers either think these inflated prices are legit or they just match them to make a quick buck.

This game is awesome! I played through it on emulation at the beginning of the summer and fell in love with it!

I've been wanting a physical copy for a while, but unless I see it somewhere local for cheap, it doesn't look like I'll ever own one. I just can't spend more than $30 for a Genesis game, especially cart-only. Even though I'm always willing to pay more for RPGs, especially good ones, there's no way in hell I'm forking over $100+.

Well I was being facetious. I hardly can find games for cheap anymore. It wasn't easy ten years ago but now I have more chance of seeing a shooting star. Still I usually sell them for what the market is paying. I have piles of things that were basically worthless back then that are suddenly worth money. For the most part I sell non video game items these days with all the thrift stores thinking they are sitting on gold.

They are the worst. The few times I have been able to talk to them face to face it usually turns out they never had a Sega anything and know nothing beyond Sonic. I'm not sure why they are so vocal. If a person prefers the Snes that's fine but don't tell me the Genesis was joke when it owned the market back then.
