IF sega were to release a new console.......

i know the general consensus is that it will never happen, but it's still possible to discuss what impact a new sega console would have on the industry in the unlikely event that it happened.

Sure, it could be a huge financial disaster, but i'm fairly sure that the mega drive/genesis sold fairly well and that all those players didnt all drop dead so i think a lot of people underestimate the interest that a new sega machine would generate.

i realise that sega isnt the same company any more but surely there is enough people who remember the brand with affection for sega to market towards. Plus younger players could be attracted by updates of classic franchises.

I personally have lost interest in modern gaming. Endless playstations and x boxes dont excite me like new consoles used to. a new sega console would peak my interest though. id buy that on day one.

Isnt the general feeling amongst people that sega was pretty awesome? wouldnt sega getting back in the game get you excited?

Actually gamers are looking for a reason to get rid of both Sony(all the BS they pulled last gen), and MS for obvious reasons, however I think Sega would still fail big time(as much as I would want them to replace either of those non-gaming companies, that have no business in this industry), for two reasons, Sega no longer has any balls at all, and they just don't seem to want to make money(seriously, they even refuse to do the no brainer stuff, that would make them 10s of millions, yet cost them next to nothing to do.

Yea exactly, lol it feels like its the twilight zone, where instead of asking companies to stop being greedy pricks, you need to beg a company to be more greedy sigh. Sega seriously, we want to give you money, but you're not giving us anything to spend the money on.

Oh, Another one of these threads. Sigh. If SEGA is telling the truth about what they said lately in terms of realizing that they abandoned the fans and wanting to return to their original demographic, then there is some hope that more good will actually come out of them. Otherwise they don't have much merit in regards to original IP material.

They can start by porting Shenmue 1, and 2 to PS4/PC

Then they need to start releasing stuff outside of Japan(since the 3DS can play DS games too, It's not too late to localize the 7th Dragon, so make that happen Sega) in general, that Isn't just named Sonic. Until these things start happening, I wont believe them, when they say they want to earn gamer's trust back.

if they released a new console, I'd buy it. Then I'd try to buy the few good games (that would likely have a low printing run) for it before it becomes discontinued and the prices of those games skyrocket.

You're betting Sega Saturn, but it might be more Dreamcast.

If Sega released a new console it would be an Xbox or Playstation under a different name, literally wouldn't change a single thing.

SEGA's console hardware was never particularly innovative anyway, at least not in a good way (yes, 32X, of course). Dreamcast was just fortunate enough to be an early bird in online gaming. Sega CD definately wasn't the first disc console either, probably beaten by PC Engine CD or some other console that passes me by.

I've actually considered getting a Wii U just because it's cheaper, not because it does anything better than PS4 or Xbox One.

I really have no clue what SEGA could do with a new console, I think it would be like Gogogadget says, another box with a different name on it. All I can think of is making games for their old consoles but that's more love than sense in this throw away world. I don't even recognize SEGA anymore. :(

You're missing out if you limit yourself to AAA releases. That old business model is kind of dead with only a few games coming out a year and most of them not terribly interesting.

But there's a lot of great smaller projects coming out all the time. A half decent PC is all you need these days. I really don't know how much longer the console wars can keep up.

Yeah, the PC-Engine's CD add-on came out at the tail end of 1988. That's pretty crazy early for CD media considering most PCs wouldn't even start having CD drives standard until the early 90's.

I wouldn't care if Sega made a console. They're a different company now, with just the same name.

The company died with Okawa.

I still put my bets on Nintendo for current manufacturers because they're actually making enjoyable, accessible games despite how much flack they get for being kiddy. Some people described their style as 'gay' but I'd rather a game be 'gay' than flat out stupid. 3DS will likely be my next console purchase if I decide to buy anything this gen. But as Obviously said, we should look towards the indie and niche stuff floating around rather than these mass produced AAA shitfests. Theoretically there could come a time where games are not only so expensive as to cause homogenouity, but that also they could make it hard to recuperate funds even from stable retail or digital sales because the costs are so out the roof, unless there is more innovation in tools to make producing these things easier (in other words, shortcuts) than the extensive and grueling bug testing/dev time costs that are becoming more enormous every year. The more realism and freedom you get, the higher all that is. It's an inherent problem with attempted realism. And as a person who is happy with the simpler stuff that is innovative without being gaudy, I will look elsewhere.
