Don't worry. I may not know any homosexuals myself, but I do have an associates degree in gender studies.
That makes me more than qualified to be offended on your behalf.
Plz support my full time job as a blogger and donate to my Patreon.
Other than simple mindedness, I'm not sure why you guys feel this is a matter of being offended.
I pointed out that the phrase is childish and in poor taste, and can carry needlessly disparaging connotations.
Good excuse to further lower yourselves.
"This post gave me cancer" - Offends cancer victims.
"Apply cold water to burned area" - Offends burn victims.
"Yo mama jokes" - Offends those whose mothers have died or are unwell in some fashion.
"Derp jokes" - Offends cross-eye people.
"Neckbeard" - Offends those that actually have neckbeards.
"Grammar Nazi" - Holocaust
"Mind blown" - Offends people with friends that died from gunshot wounds to the head.
"Shots fired" - Offends people that suffered gunshot wounds.
"Disregard that I suck cocks" - Now this one is clearly homophobic.
Even some of the nice ones:
"Stand up for yourself" - Offends paraplegics.
"As a rule of thumb" - Domestic violence connotations.
Any others we should ban guys? Wouldn't want to offend anyone on the internet.
What?! Everyone should be able to go through life never being offended or challenged!Quote:
Thick skin. You must develop one.
Offended people offend me.
When did Zz Badnusty advocate "banning" anything? Honestly, these incredibly defensive reactions to a very polite post are pretty ridiculous.
I've kinda lost respect for the "No one tells me what to say!" school of thought, especially over the Internet. Everyone's a tough guy and free speech advocate online, but just about all of them would fold like a cheap suit in the face of any real danger. Do what these people did, or this guy, and then we'll talk.
Really, quote-unquote SJWs and their detractors have one big thing in common -- they're all talk from behind a computer screen, and never do any of the dangerous or unglamorous work involved in actually making the world a better place, because the point is "Pay attention to me! Pay attention to me!" and the ideology is almost incidental.
Anyway, I've always found "butthurt" an irritating and lazy insult, and I've always read it -- and often seen it explicitly used -- as an ass-rape/"making you my bitch" insult. It doesn't really matter what the origins are; it's basically the "Talk to the hand!" of 2005-2015 at this point.
The German people were scapegoats after both world wars.
The Nazi's were hero's to their country.
Just because they lost and you shoot them in your video game doesn't make them the
bad guys.
There is a difference between tact and censorship. Forethought is generally prefered to whitewashing as well. Perhaps the original poster wanted to have a discussion about the possible bigotry that he has inferred from the usage of certain popular slang terms.
If you disagree, I don't know, explain why you think that he's wrong instead of layering the insults and juvenile speculation and delineation of people's sexual orientation.
Personally, I've only seen this term used on the internet and the TV show Workaholics, so I'm not really sure as to who commonly says it. It's certainly interesting hearing the same people who say "dudebro" also use this term.
In other news, Five Nights At Freddy's 4 came out way early (it was supposed to be launched on Halloween). I'm still trying to get past the fifth night in part two, but with everything you have to keep track of, I can't get past 4 A.M. I'd watch a playthrough so I can get started on part three, but I refuse to look up how others did it when I'm this close to beating it on my own.
This literally makes no sense, why would I put myself in real danger and what does that have to do with "butt hurt"? Are you asking me if I'm willing to face a serious threat to defend the usage of the phrase "butt hurt"? I'm sorry I don't really care about it that much (nor do I even use it that much). My goal is not to defend free speech, but to mock political correctness.
I have a friend that had an ass surgery and he couldn't sit for months (true story, not making this up). I don't think he ever cared about the phrase, or any stupid ass related jokes for that matter. He cared that he couldn't sit and was in a lot of pain. That's kinda the relevant part.
The problem I have is with this right here:
Where do you stop once you start self censoring? What phrases are ok and which aren't. Can I get a list? Like the list I did before, each of those phrases can potentially insult someone. Should I wait for thoughtful posts like Zz's and just compile my own list as they come? Should I always take extreme care to only use neutral or positive, "non-metaphorical" phrases?
Or should I do like I usually do, and course correct when someone who really has all the right to be insulted points it out? It's not like I say "butt hurt" to people with actual anal problems for kicks. I'm not a monster without empathy.
Kamahl, at age 25 you should begin to try to converse like an adult.
Of course the internet gives us a playground to fuck around, and if you really think the phrase "butthurt" is the best way you can express yourself, then, well, have at it. But you're only being the fool yourself.
You trying to make this about banning words is entirely off the mark.
My point is that there's no real bravery in mocking something that can't/won't hit back, or where you're not putting yourself at risk by doing it. It's the whole punching up vs. punching down thing.
Somewhere between black and white -- or if you prefer, between 0% and 100%. Almost everyone who doesn't have some sort of mental illness or neurological defect self-censors, simply because we don't inflict every stupid, callous, or cruel thought we have on everyone within earshot. I mean, would the world really be a worse place if we all learned to STFU more often?
I don't have a beef with you, Kamahl, and I don't think you're a "monster without empathy". :) It's just that the claim that Zz was demanding a "ban" irritated me, because he did no such thing.
Some days it seems like everyone on the Internet wants to act like the guy who "speaks his mind" and "tells it like it is", but there's nothing to admire about being that person if there's no risk. At least the guy who acts like a mouthy asshole in real life (let alone someone who stands up to real evil, like the White Rose) is putting his bodily integrity on the line -- he might, to be blunt, get the shit beaten out of him for running his mouth.
But on the Internet? Everyone can say anything with no consequence. So there's nothing brave or admirable about being the "edgy" guy who says whatever he wants -- anyone who does that is just yet another person who thinks that his opinion and/or the sound of his voice is better than silence.
Eh, the only problem with that is that it tends to make people feel even shittier and more marginalized -- they have to either put up with what's being said, or get shit on for being a killjoy whose skin isn't "thick" enough. If someone starts telling Jew jokes and everyone laughs nervously and waits for the one Jewish guy in the group to say something, that's not really good enough, no?
Don't get me wrong, I don't side with the Tumblr types either -- they're parasites, basically speaking, who contribute nothing of value to the world except their own sense of persecution. But I just wish people would realize that by perennially talking like they're on a particularly abrasive episode of Family Guy (or whatever), they're not doing anything brave or noble. Sneering at everything -- especially the weak -- has always been the easiest thing in the world to do, but I've never met anyone brave who does it.
His poor eye. :( I guess it's like the Pauli exclusion principle -- you can only have 2 brown eyes within a 1-foot radius.
Adults typically have other things to worry about than silly internet phrases.
I've already pointed out it's not a phrase I use often. It's not about the phrase itself.
I'm not saying you expect the government to ban the phrase or anything of the sort. You are however trying to guilt trip the people on this thread into self-censoring for political correctness, something I'm firmly against. You're so focused on this specific phrase (because of what happened to your friends) that you can't see the forest for the trees. It's not about censoring "butt hurt", it's about censoring language at all.
The very idea of censoring language is stupid. I'm talking about self-censoring because "someone, somewhere, might be offended", not self-censoring because "I might offend this specific person". VERY different things.
To look at this very thread, the people who made butthurt jokes were pretty insensitive to Zz. I didn't do it, not because I'm a hypocrite, but because I don't want to offend Zz specifically since it's a nasty subject for him.
Kamahl, I think your argument is foundering because you're not differentiating between "offended" and "made to feel like shit", and between "self-censorship" and "behaving with compassion/empathy".
I don't generally care very much when people are offended, because it's basically a tribal thing, e.g. "How dare you say something negative about my tribe!", that doesn't really have much to do with right and wrong. But when something I say makes them feel like I view them as less than a person -- like a thing -- then that does matter to me, since people who habitually make other people feel like things are typically people who we'd all be better off without.
I think it's reasonable to anticipate what might cause that feeling, and to hand oneself a dose of STFU -- or at least, of awareness -- before it's needed. I assume that, for example, you talk about rape differently when you're around women vs. when it's just guys, and make at least a slight effort given that, in any group of more than 2-3 women, there's a good chance at least one of them (or their sister, daughter, etc.) has been assaulted at some point in time.
I'm confused. Is the OP offended by homophobia, ass-rape, or hemorrhoids? Or all three?
There's two different issues here.
1. Butthurt is a stupid, intellectually lazy insult that people should avoid using in a constructive conversation. This is true.
2. Butthurt is a harmful and offensive term. This is melodramatic political correctness.
Apparently all 3.
I don't like the phrase either, but not so bad that I'd make up a sob-story and a thread on to defend why it offends me.
i JUST don't like trendy, internet, me too, fit me in, look at me, Politically correct, bullshit typically found in social media circuses.
It's overused. Lots of those out there. You know it's time to put it to rest when your own parents and 9 year old kids start saying it but what can you do?
Then why have you turned this into your personal crusade?
I've pointed out already this has nothing to do with being offended. Im not offended, I'm not insulted. If you can point out where you and the others get that idea I would be suprised.
It also has nothing to do with political correctness.
It has everything to do with a litterally juvenile stupid and overused phrase. I pointed out what it means when I hear it, as well as why I suspect children enjoy using it as they snicker behind their keyboards. Again, I never expressed or felt offense or insult at the term.
Guilt tripping people into self censoring? Well you've really put some thought into this.
If anyone could possibly feel any guilt for taking pleasure in using phrases that insult, demean, belittle etc other people, well idk that's not my purpose. You have some high horse to ride and some fabricated crusade to persue.
I just simply needed to point out that "butthurt" is one of the most childish and overused phrases among gamers, along with the fact that it carries a patheticly derogatory subtext.
It's not about censoring language, it's about being a decemt and respectable human being.
Political correctness isnt something i associate with. I'll certainly call someone something offensive if I mean it and want to treat them like shit. But to parade around here and make stupid analogies to other trite phrases is really stretching things to scratch your own chip on your shoulder.
Is this one better?:

AAAAAANNNNNNNNND thread.
One of the craziest things I've ever read. I think that's enough. Trying to censor the internet is like charging headfirst at a brick wall and expecting it to move. This has just opened itself up to a flamewar.
