Anyone else want to see a traditional PS game like I-IV some day? I sure would!
I was actually randomly thinking about this earlier today.
It's not going to happen unless it's on a small scale. JRPGs have a niche status these days, though the fact that FFVII is getting a remake does bring a fairly large elephant into the room. I do think the timing is right to try and inject some new life into the genre.
All that said Sega does own Atlus now, and could possibly utilize them to help make this a reality. Still, it feels unlikely.
If they were going to use ATLUS(which they should, but probally wont, because they're SEGA=enough said), I have to believe they would've released their newer Shining Force games, especially with how hot the Fire Emblem series has been lately(It's a no brainer, Shining Force is a shameless rip-off of FE to beginwith), surely this hasn't slipped their minds, SEGA just doesn't like to make money anymore, and they definitely don't give a crap about the western market at all.
I just wish, if Sega Isn't going to release their other games outside of Japan, they would stop making Sonic games too, because Sonic is the last thing we want at this point(besides his rep has been damaged beyond repair anyway).
I've been waiting for a tradition Phantasy Star sequel since the original. Instead we got II - IV. Another PSII - IV would be neat, but we already got several. I'd give anything to play a fully realized version of the early PSIV screenshots with the 3D dungeons.
I'm pretty sure Sega's answer to FF7, was meant to be Virtual Fighter RPG(it was meant to come out shortly after FF7 too, It's so obvious), but luckily the Saturn is such a alien POS as far as architecture goes, it was too hard to optimize it for the system, while at the same time, fitting it on a reasonable amount of CDs(According to Yu him self, for them to have continued to follow through with the Saturn plan, to fit the game we know as Shenmue now on Saturn CDs, and have the game be somewhat presentable, yet still nowhere even close to as good as the DC game, probally not even as good as most 3D PS games), it would've required 50 CDs(that's not a typo, not 5, but a whopping 50 CDs, "five, and a Zero" ).
I'm glad it was scrapped, then built from the ground up for the Dreamcast, and I'm glad the name was changed to Shenmue(and besides, It's not a RPG anyway, so the old name would've been so misleading)
Yea I think everyone at E3 thought the same thing, the lack of excitement was so blatant(really slow claps, and like longated yeas, with bored out of their skull voices, with basically that's nice, can we move on to the next game announcement attitudes lol). Hell even if Square had the will, and skill to do a proper job(which they don't), with all the titanic failures they've had over the past 10 years, they still wouldn't beable to afford the development costs.
What I think this whole thing is about, is It's that time again, when Square is meant to go bankrupt(it has become a regular event for them lol), and this scheme is the one that takes the least amount of thought to come up with, so that's what I think this is. Just a PR stunt with the hopes that enough people will blindly buy this random game, they just slap FF 7 on at launch to atleast keep them above water.
I would love to see a game in the tradition of the original Phantasy Star games. Top down (Bird's eye view, heavy grinding, Space Opera, strategy RPG).
That's probably why I enjoyed Star Odyssey so much.
But, yeah, any game in that tradition will suffice for me. I'm just glad I haven't yet played all the 8 or 16 bit strategy RPGs out there yet. They may never come back.
Although every now and then something just as awesome sprouts as if from nowhere: Ni No Kuni. It took from all the best ones and made for an amazing title.
I think PS4 ended the serie in a quite good fashion (even if it's far from my preferred episode of the saga ; it may even be the one I like the least).
That said, I'm sad to see this saga fall into oblivion. Just for that, I'd like another episode.
By the way, I feel speaking about FF in a topic devoted to PS is a clear lack of taste :)
Even if we got another Genesis/Sega-CD Phantasy Star game in the same gameplay/design style as PSII - IV, what I'd like most is a return to the fantasy-touched-with-sci-fi theme of the origjnal, instead of the inverse. That was the most disappointjng part for me at the time, playing through PSII when it launched. It felt like Phantasy Star in name only.
While FF3(aka 6) had a great system, 7's material system is far superior. Yes, and no, the dungeon design in FF games, have never been that great anyway, so going 3D doesn't really make it much worse then past FF games(now Dragon Quest 8 on the otherhand omg, there might as well be no dungeons. To make matters worse, the series was known for its great, complex dungeons before POS 8 came along), infact the Glacier dungeon(as in the overall dungeons, not the multiple dungeons within the dungeon lol) specifically, is possibly the best dungeon in the series, with all the other best dungeons being in FF 4, and 5(most of FF 6s maps suck worse then FF7s maps, that's the scary part, so yea it doesn't seem like much was sacrificed for the 3D, especially since most of the 3D for dungeons, aren't real 3D, it just seems to be drawn to give the impression of 3D, without being actually 3D. Bad design choice I agree, but It's not a sacrifice caused by 3D. There's so little actual 3D in the game, it doesn't take up much space at all, the game is rather huge don't you know)
That would have been awesome if ths MMO(s) were designed to play like the real RPG iterations of the PS series.
Isn't 90's Phantasy Star called 'Final Fantasy' today?
