Remind me please, is there any N64 game you actually enjoyed? :p

What was it about Mario 64 that turned you off in general? I enjoyed it a lot myself and while I can't defend the N64 controller I thought the control of the game was pretty damn good. Sonic Adventure was a game I also dug into many hours and yes like you I beat it multiple times. Truthfully my favorite character was Big the Cat but I was always a sucker for the fishing aspect of that game. Also how does the Gamecube Version stack up vs the Dreamcast Version? Was anything lost or gained from porting it over to the Gamecube?
@ Soulis: My N64 didn't get as much play as I would have liked outside of Mario 64 and Zelda. Back when the PS1 was out at the same time, I had a ton of RPGs, Fighters & other games on that system which really tore me away from my N64. I'm not saying the N64 sucked just it lost my interest after those key 1st party titles.
I don't like Mario 64 either, but that's because i'm constantly thrown off by the controls and the camera.
So Sonic 4 was an abomination altogether for physics alone? Yes it was an important aspect, but it wasn't the only aspect that made Sonic great. Freedom Planet has some weird physics too and everybody loves it. I don't write off a game entirely just because it misses an aspect that made other games in the series great, and instead just check out if the game is fun in its own right, anyway. The physics aren't as good as in the classics, but that doesn't mean I couldn't enjoy the game for what it was. Instead of fixating on one shortcoming and endlessly bitching about it, maybe we should just accept it and still enjoy what's there. But it seems most people can't do that.
This is the same shit as people writing off Monster World IV because it wasn't as open-ended and Metroidvania-ish as Wonder Boy in Monster World and previous Monster World titles, and because it didn't have a medieval-esque setting. That makes it bad all of a sudden? Just see if the game offers something on its own, even if it isn't in line with others installments in the franchise.
Reasons why Sonic 4 is horrible include
- Broken physics (yes, worse than Freedom Planet)
- Horrible, low budget nasty 3D polygons with zero art direction to them
- Terrible music, that fucking circus-themed boss song got shitcanned from Sonic 3D for all the right reasons.
- 4 levels, all of which we're based on tropes from previous games, down from the 14 (!) from Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
- Level design relied far too heavily on just boost & homing attack your way through the entire level, which is nothing what classic Sonic is about.
- No bonus stages, again why remove something from the previous game?
I agree with these points. I still don't think that makes the game horrible, just not on par with the 16-bit games. Average/mediocre is what I'd call Sonic 4 and I never said it's that good of a game. All I'm saying is that I can enjoy it still, but it seems I can't even say that anymore without people telling me it's an abomination.
I already mentioned the ugly graphics as well. And yes, the physics were so broken that i couldn't enjoy the game. The controls and flow of the original Sonic games was what made them so addictive for me.
I also forgot to add the homing attack. Because the controls and physics are so bad, buggy and unpredictable, they needed a homing attack to make sure you can hit enemies. You didn't need that shit in the original games.
No, its not the same. These are just different styles of level/map design and graphics. Different tastes, different opinions. There is nothing wrong with either. The controls/physics in Sonic 4 weren't "different". They were just bad/broken.
That's fine, I can respect that. But I see a lot of mentality in this thread that if it isn't exactly what old Classic Sonic was, it can't be good. Sonic is written of as average at best and horrible at worst for every game after S3&K, but there are still a handful of games that are very much worth playing in my opinion. Sonic Unleashed did have the werewolf thing, yeah, but no aspect of the game felt bad to me. Just different, and yes, maybe it's not what the franchise was about, but that doesn't make it a bad game in its own right. That's my whole point.
And yeah, I realized the Monster World comparison wasn't a very good one. lmao
Well, my point is always about standards. Sonic unleashed may not be a bad game on it's own in the same way OtherM wasn't a bad game on it's own. But as a Metroid, OtherM might as well be the worst thing humans ever made. See, when you are using a name/ip that has set some standards or have an identity and style of it's own, then some expectations are created. You don't want just a "good game on its own" you expect a good game in said franchise because you loved the previous games and you want something similar and at least as good as before (not worse). You expect to see some improvements and new ideas that make sense in said franchise but in the case of Sonic, modern entries made most things worse.
I agree with your standards thing. As I said, behind every cultural belief lies some truth. Sonic hasn't been at the top of his game since Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I don't think there is anybody who can deny that. I am also not defending Sega for a lot of their bad practices or how they keep changing what Sonic is about, but I do also believe that most of the games aren't as inexcusably bad as so many people will keep on saying, and that many of them have something to offer on their own.
This thread is kind of an eye-opener as to why people don't like Sonic anymore, instead of the typical blind hate. Makes me understanding of the reasons, can't do much with ''lel Saniczz never been gud since s3&k''.
No it's quite alright to discuss it like this. It's not like we're not all adults here. I don't think any system deserves any real bashing except the Phillips CD-i but that's another thing all together. The time I played my N64 I really enjoyed the games that I liked for it. I bought the thing on day one and I never regretted it. Mario 64 kept me busy for weeks which is all I cared about. When Zelda 64 came out I was lost in the world of Hyrule once again enjoying every damn minute of it... Well the Water Temple made me rage a few times but yeah... overall those two games made the system worth the money I spent.
I never got into Golden Eye since I wasn't a big FPS fan even tho Doom still holds a special place in my heart. The N64 to me was a decent system but it didn't have a lot of games I wanted but the ones I did play for it, I'll always remember it fondly.
I consider Mario 64, Zelda OOT and Phantasy Star 2 the best games I ever played.
