Matteus, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the original bold faced text looks much more clearer to the eye. The new script is s little harder to read.
The font is going through refinement :) and I'm adding the option to switch it off
When everyone can select the font that will be fine I think.
I did the new gothic style font because I find the original one so bad ugly and clumsy looking... and so does Matt I believe.
An oldish font is naturally harder to read, that is also the case when you have it written on paper. The point of it in the game is to find a middle way between "readability" and style. The old SDK font basically just does not fit the game in its enitrety. The whole menu frame will be graphic too, nut just fields of black like now. So it should not look like a computer menu, you know?
We are also limited to 8x8 pixels per letter right now, which makes a stylish font a bit difficult. I am trying to improve some of the harder to read letters.
Maybe I could even add another simple font; not as fat and blocky as the SDK one, with thin lines but no ornaments. Would that be welcome or do you guys really like the old font as it was a lot?
I've added a poll regarding the graphical style please vote!
Thanks, Matt. I have very mixed feelings. On the one side, I think cartoonish may be more popular overall; especially with the limitations in this kind of game I think such characters may be more fun to look at in the static enviroment.
On the other hand I would really like to do Dracula's vampire slaves with bare boobs... that calls for realistic style. :P
I went with Realistic, kind of feel like the original artist probably wanted something scary and realistic but didn't because he thought the low color depth would prevent it even though it really doesn't. Personally I do kind of wish it were a bit more bloody like the Hammer Dracula movies. :)
I went with Realistic as well.
Matteus and 106 Stars, thanks for taking the time to reply to my concern. Considering the theme deals with Dracula, I understand your willingness to want to design the text around a more gothic tone. From that stand point, on the surface it makes sense. But when one factors the style of gameplay, it may inhibit the overall enjoyment of the game. Consider this: The player must constantly flip between the text and what is happening within the display window.
Couple this with the fact that the present gothic font is harder to read due to being less pronounced (not as bold/chunkier as the original version) and harder to discern compared to a normal font and I suspect that the average player will suffer more eye fatigue.
When comparing the 2 short clips featured in posts #41 and 42 of this thread, I find myself straining to read the text appearing in the second video. Over a prolonged period of time I can see myself playing this type of game much longer if the original text is used.
In any case, my perspective is only one among many. Just something for you to consider. Cheers! :D
I went with cartoon. I think it wouldn't be held back by game engine/hardware limitations as much as a realistic style, which would be much harder to emulate.
