Sealed Collecting; where's the joy come from???

I hate the idea that real people are out there buying and selling sealed games!! I just don't get the appeal of owning a game that will never be played??!! Seriously, how is there any value in something that will NEVER be used for what it was intended for? It seems so stupid!! I don't personally know anyone that collects sealed games, but if youre someone that does- I DONT LIKE YOU!! Youre an asshole. Do us all a favor and get a different hobby!!! If I could go and rip open all the retro sealed games out there....so awesome!!! Anyway, am I the only one that finds this part of the gaming scene stupid? Am I the one that's the asshole?? im willing to listen to the other side........

I don't get the sealed game collecting aspect of it either. But why get so agitated about it?
There are collectards and then there are MEGA collectards. They latter get their jollies just by owning stuff that's pristine/flawless/untouched. It is what it is.

Yeah, kinda;) The reason for the full on hate from me is the idea of me having to pay out the arse for games because sellers see the stupidly high price these games sell for, and figure "well if a sealed copy is worth $500 bux, then this opened copy must be worth a c-note.." and so on. And then there's the youtube video's of these guys going on about the VGA, and how cool it is to have someone validate the condition of their unopened games. I just find this type of collector OBNIXIOUS!!! I blame them for the inflated prices of games. WHY OWN A GAME YOU CANT PLAY??? It just seems like the douchiest thing imaginable!! I guess I look down on people in the scene that I don't see as true gamers. Its a form of racism I need to look into....

I enjoy collecting games of all types, there's appeal in owning a knackered up battered cart only item and a sealed one. I'm lucky enough to own a sealed copy of a game that I'll never need to open, and I also have a digital copy of it to play. So I suppose I'm only a bit of an arsehole! I am mega tempted to open it though... But I reckon why not keep it as is seeing as I have the opportunity to do so? If I hadn't the means to play what I keep sealed I would open it without problems.

I find sealed collecting to be completely foolish. Now if I come across a sealed game I simply wouldn't trust that it's not been rewrapped. I don't feel sealed or graded prices affect the prices of loose or CIB games though. There's far too few sealed being sold.

I don't see the appeal of sealed stuff either except to sell it to someone who cares. I don't even like CIB cartridge games unless the box was plastic like Genesis or DS. Often, cardboard box games require special care and handling/storage than the plastic ones, so that makes them even more tedious.

That's a very valid point right there!!! I prefer having my genesis games with a box and manual mostly due to the fact that's its easier to store, maintain, & locate when I want to play them:) Obviously the manuals don't add to any of that, but I like having them so I can read them & refer to them if I don't know how to do something. Wanting to own/collect nes, snes, & n64 complete boxes seems like a big waste of money!! Nintendo didn't design those boxes to be kept. If you happen to come across a sealed copy of a game you already have a copy of that u can use to play; I can see that appeal. But to hunt down strictly sealed games goes against everything I believe in!!

Well, someone owning a sealed copy doesn't affect you much, tbh. Even if he were to open it. 1 or even 20 more unsealed copies aren't gonna do much to drop the price of the rest. Unless that game is rare as well. In which case, well, you're gonna have to pay to have the privilege to be among the ones who have an original copy of the game. Life sucks etc.

If, on the other hand, you realize that you're actually just paying to have something rare and that it really isn't any different than having a reproduction... The moral argument just doesn't pack enough punch since the original developer has long since stopped making money off these cartridges.

Another valid point. I guess someone pissed in my cheerios this morning and I decided to take it out on sealed game collectors. I will never invite any of these guys to my gamer nights; but I guess they really don't effect me in any way. But it would be nice if someone else agreed with me that they are jerk-offs???? Anyone.....

I dunno. People can collect stuff how they want to and so can I. I have a sealed Lynx game (that I have another copy of) that I bought just because it was sealed, inexpensive (dude had a case of them) and I thought "wow, that's kind of neat." It's sealed in a Lynx clamshell thingie, and I like it. I wouldn't go out of my way to grab more unless the opportunity was too great to pass up... but I bought it. No regrets.

What does it matter who collects what, and how? Not directed at the OP, but I see that term "collectard" thrown around a lot lately and every time I see it, I have to fight the urge to roll my eyes. Do I wish that games were in the hands of people who would keep them in decent shape and actually play them once in a while? Sure, but if we're going there, I'd also like a pony. Bottom line is that the way someone else collects (or doesn't) collect stuff doesn't matter. Unless they sniped you on eBay or something... and even then. Hopefully we have some common ground where we meet... but beyond that, live and let live. Worry about your own collection and I'll worry about mine.

I don't collect sealed, but I do have sealed games. I actually prefer to buy retro games used and open so that I can verify the quality and completeness of the game. More than half the "sealed" games I see on ebay are banged up beyond repair. Some even are re-seals. So I try to refrain from buying them sealed (i.e.-Cardboard box games. Those tend to always come squashed up or sunwashed). When I do find one sealed and in great condition for a great price, you can bet your ass I'll be buying it.

As for the few games I still have sealed, why the fuck do I need to open them for if I haven't gotten around to playing them yet? All in due time. For now, they will stay sealed.

Well I do my part to keep "sealed" games to a minimum as I rip that bogus plastic value off immediately. Don't kid yourself as every sealed copy of a game inflates the value of any and every game, that's why people re-shrink wrap items. Unless you plan to be buried with your collection do the next generation a favor and rip that stupid selling feature right off. :)

I personally can't understand the appeal of collecting only sealed stuff since the assumption is that they will never be played.

I've got a couple sealed games older game, but a lot of them are just ones I bought and never had time to dig into or I found another nice CIB copy for cheap. I'd probably never sell them at this point since I've got memories around buying them back in HS/college, but I doubt I'll sell them either.

The "joy" of sealed collecting comes from posting the pics on reddit and getting upvotes.

you guys might be angry or upset or whatever at people who do this, but they treat it no different than art collectors do. they don't see a nice shiny sealed video game that will never be played, they see money. and it's pretty plain to see that this practice is making people some serious dough when the buyers turn up.

If we didn't have flash carts I'd understand all this. I for one would not have a significant portion of my games as sealed pieces, but if the price was right and I was sure of the game's legitimacy I'd have it. What's wrong with keeping something pristine so the next person can enjoy it (their own way) if you resell?

The game to which I referred earlier is Ecco Jr, as it's in a cardboard box I choose to keep it sealed and in good nick, I bought it from a seller on eBay that deals only in games. I have bought many games from them and trust in its legitamacy. I do find the term 'collectard' quite amusing too!

I don't understand owning complete sealed collections (those guys must have way too much time and money on their hands), but I honestly don't have the time or the investment to cry about it. I don't ever purchase retro games that cost over $25 though, so maybe that's why I'm apathetic to the whole deal. Who freakin' cares one way or the other if you have a sealed Crusader of Centy? I can just emulate the game and get even more enjoyment out of it. We both win.

For people going for complete sealed sets, I can only imagine that for some of these folks the thrill of the hunt for a sealed copy of some obscure title is the driving forward. Regular hunters are just looking to find a local copy cheap, these people are on such a level that finding them new and sealed makes it much more of a challenge maybe? I dunno, we all have vices.

I have some modern collectors limited editions that I kept sealed.
Catherine Love is over deluxe edition PS3
Zelda Majora's Mask 3DS limited edition
MGS HD collection limited edition PS3


And a few random PS3 games vanilla version that are still sealed. Mainly the reason the games are sealed is because they stayed in my backlog so long that eventually my PS3 blu-ray laser died for the 2nd time out of warranty this time. So for the last year I just been using it for Netflix and PSN games.

I have sealed games but they are that way because I haven't opened them. I would never pay a premium for a sealed games. Toys, on the other hand, are a totally different thing. :)

I don't collect sealed, but I think I might somewhat understand the appeal. Now, I'll never understand the way they see these things as so extremely valuable, but I do get the neatness factor.

A sealed game is kind of like a time capsule. The last time it was exposed to fresh air and oily human hands, was X amount of year ago (if ever). The product is (supposedly) still in factory mint condition. It's kind of cool to think about, but it's something that would ultimately drive me insane, because I tend to get overly sentimental about stupid shit like that. I'd feel actually guilty about opening it and ruining it's preservational state, and then I'd also feel guilty about never playing that game and basically ignoring something I should be enjoying, and wasting my own, or someone's money that was spent to get it. Hence why I don't collect sealed.

I would be lying if I said that it doesn't pain me to break seals, but I do it. Fortunately for me, I buy re-sealable baggies for my games so that I can keep them as 'new' as possible after breaking into them. I probably have several hundred sealed games, I'll open them when I feel like playing them. The only one I might not open, is a copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula, since I already have an opened copy.

People who open sealed games and carefully document the contents are doing the Lord's work. I've done that a few times myself.

I've opened most of my sealed games except, like QuickSciFi, the ones I simply haven't gotten around to playing yet. The ones I've opened include, let's see...a bunch of PlayStation games, 4-5 3DO games bought as part of a cheap lot, three on the Dreamcast (Alien Front Online, Floigan Bros., MTV Sports), a couple 32X (Shadow Squadron and Supreme Warrior) and one on the Genesis (ATP Tour Championship Tennis). I think that's it.

For Dreamcast games (since they fail to load so easily), it's certainly nice knowing that the disc inside the package will be pristine.
