Sony's PlayStation 2 is 15 years old today. Name your top 10 games.

The PlayStation 2 was released on October 26th, 2000. It ended up becoming the biggest selling console of all time. I think the fact that it was a poor man's DVD player helped a lot. The PS2 definitely helped with DVD movie sales. I was actually a bigger fan of the original Xbox at the time to be completely honest.

Joking aside, the PS2 never appealed to me. The Cube had a much better library in my, and my friends', opinions at the time. From what I remember, the PS2 cornered the adult market with Grand Theft Auto. I never really played the PS2. In fact, the first time I could play a PS2 game was when I got a PS3.

Some people really enjoyed it though. The Gran Turismo series was huge.

15 years already? I actually remember deciding between dreamcast or PS2. My dad told me dreamcast was cheaper, which meant that I could get a few extra games instead of only 1. I ended up getting PS2 (Yes yes. SEGA fan heresy, I know) because someone told me that they were going to stop making games. This was in early '02, so that was definitely true. The backwards compatibility, and having a built in DVD player also made the choice easier. The first game I bought was Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex. I got it because I was a big fan of the PS1 games. It was okay, but not as good as the PS1 games. I was definitely a PS2 kid growing up, and I've probably played PS2 more than any other console with the possible exception of Genesis (which I also played to death).

Overall, I have a lot of great memories with the system. Getting the network adapter and playing online for the first time was an amazing experience. It's tied with Genesis for my favorite game console.

I think my top 10 games (one per franchise, no particular order) are:

Sly Cooper

Beyond Good and Evil (Fantastic game. It was a forgotten gem for the longest time, but it's gotten more popular over time.)

Gran Turismo 4

Ace Combat 04 (Probably my favorite air combat game. Great gameplay, and some interesting story elements.)

SSX Tricky

Ratchet and Clank 3. (and the first two for that matter)

Katamari Damaci (This was such an odd game when I first saw it. I'm glad that they kept in all of the Japanese craziness when they released it in the USA.)

GTA: San Andreas

Sky Odyssey (Somewhat obscure. It's a fun aviation game!)

Crash 'n Burn. (Probably nostalgia goggles. This is the only one on the list that I don't own anymore, so I can't make sure it was actually fun.)

Me and my sister's first DVD player was a ps2.

The only one I have is still sealed.

To be honest, during that generation of consoles I was mostly playing on PC.

Last true console hardware in my book and a great one IMO.

Probably the best racing library of all time (although I still prefer the PC exclusives of late '90s and early '00s). Very strong fighting library.
The rest of its highlighted genres doesn't appeal that much to me.

First half of its lifespan has a good chunk of what I consider to be the last batch of really great games; second half has a lot of the uninspired convoluted crap like we had for the entire 7th gen and which is the norm nowadays.

I've bought a fully HDD-modded fatty one recently and I need to put more time on it.

Yeah, the PS2 has a stupid amount of fighters, if you like KOF in particular the machine has games in that series coming out of it's ears. Not only are all the original Neo Geo entries present and accounted for, but you have the Atomiswave ports and '98 Ultimate Match and '02 Unlimited Match to round things out.

The more old-school SNK fighters your thing? The Neo Geo Online Collection has most of that covered too. Plus excellent ports of the Metal Slugs.

Capcom and Arc System Works are also extremely well represented, stuff like Hokuto no Ken and Sengoku Basara X are well worth checking out. So are Fate Unlimited Codes and Melty Blood IMO.

Not just fighters, but as a fan of old 2D arcade games in general this thing had Taito Memories, Capcom Arcade Classics, Atari Anthology, the later Sega Ages entries and more.

If you can't tell, it's one of my favourite systems, and that's without even taking into account the 3D stuff on offer. As far as a top 10, I just can't. Sorry :)

I didn't get my PS2, until the Gran Turismo 3 pack-in was available. While I certainly liked a lot of games on the console, and think that it has a lot of really great games to play, it only got the lion's share of gameplay time from me for about a year and a half. The Gamecube took up a lot of my gaming time, but it was the Xbox that eventually got the most playtime from me as that generation started winding down.
