RetroBlast: A 90's gaming RetroSpective (new podcast with Genesis talk)

Hi guys, I've posted on this forum back in the days here and there, and I thought I would let everybody here know about a new podcast that I'm doing that will have a lot of Sega Genesis talk in it.

The podcast is called RetroBlast: A 90's gaming RetroSpective

Basically the idea behind the podcast is that I'm chronologically going through my gaming life in the early 1990's, talking about every game I purchased or rented, gaming magazines I was reading at the time, and news stories and things going on in the industry at that time. It's kinda like my love letter to early 90's video gaming. I started things off with my decision to get a TurboGrafx-16 in the fall of 1989 in Episode 1, and I'm just going through my entire gaming history, slowly but surely, show by show.

I just uploaded episode 4, and in Episode 4 is where I start talking about the Sega Genesis. I purchased a Sega Genesis in mid August of 1990, and Episode 4 has a pretty lengthy discussion about my decision to add a Genesis to my stable, and the first two Sega Genesis games I played. Pat Riley Basketball and Altered Beast. From this point forward, there will be a ton of Genesis discussion in pretty much every show. I got the Sega CD at launch in November 1992, so when I get to that point, I'll be discussing the Sega CD, and I also got a Sega 32X at launch in November 1994 ( I was a hardcore early adopter that basically bought every major gaming system on launch day )

So, there is going to be tons of Sega Genesis coverage in this podcast, so I thought maybe some of the peeps on this forum might enjoy some of these episodes. I know every guy and their Mom's cousin has a podcast, and I'm just another in the sea of mediocrity, but if you're a huge fan of the Sega Genesis ( and 16-bit gaming in general ), I think you might enjoy this podcast if you give it a try.

Episode 5 is now up


For some reason I was thinking that starting with episode 4, it would mostly be Genesis stuff going forward, but Episode 5 actually has quite a bit of TurboGrafx-16 coverage.

I do have an embarrassing story to tell about Revenge of Shinobi in Episode 5. I think starting with episode 6, the games discussed will be much more heavy on the Genesis side, but if anybody also likes the TG-16 the other episodes should be somewhat interesting (hopefully! :) )

This episode is about 95 percent Genesis coverage.

All these Genesis games are discussed: John Madden Football, Phelios, Super Monaco GP, Lakers vs. Celtics and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.


Lakers vs Celtics and John Madden Football are discussed in detail. I know they are sports games (yuck), but the stories behind getting those games are pretty interesting. At least I'm hoping they are interesting.

It would be very interesting to hear from somebody that "hates" sports games, but tries to listen to the whole episode anyway. If anybody would do that and then post back about whether it sucked or not, that would be interesting.

There really aren't that many people on the whole that hate sports games. You're just used to dealing with the internet.

I don't like sports games. Pre-licensed games were fun enough and there have been a few I've gotten into over the years. But the most fun sports games just aren't as enjoyable for me as almost every other kind of game and aren't worth the time or effort to learn them.

I've noticed that in most older game forums, sports games aren't as popular as most other genes either.

I'm not crazy about heavily licensed sport games either. Or at least I never was introduced enough to sports on TV/school, friends, and videogame sports as a kid. So the only sport games I enjoyed as a kid are the more individual release stuff that stands on it's own - like Blades of Steel and NBA Jam. Versus stuff that weren't as memorable and barely updated every year as if I actually followed sports in real life and as if I cared about about minor season player stat changes.

It's weird cause I started off my gaming life as mostly a casual sports game player with my buds. We'd play Double Dribble, Bases Loaded, Tecmo Bowl and Track N Field II on the NES. I played Contra, Ninja Gaiden and Rygar, but still considered myself more of a sports gamer guy.

but then my tastes changed pretty dramatically, but still, all throughout my life, I could appreciate a good football, basketball or baseball game. Even some soccer games too. With each new generation of hardware, there was this obvious improvement that you got with sports games that made it interesting.

Episode 7 starts off with an interesting personal story of some major drama that I was involved in around December of 1990. This is one of those stories that you would think would be better left forgotten, but it's a story I feel like I have to tell, to help explain my transformation from a very casual gamer to somebody that had a full blown obsession with video games. The story is quite embarrassing for me personally, but this drama that took place, triggered a domino effect that eventually sent me down the path of being a video game junkie.

( this story is kind of part 1 of a 3 part tale that will continue in episode 8 and then conclude in episode 9 )


Later in the show, I take a deep dive into two classic Sega Genesis games released in the Fall of 1990. I talk about picking up Sword of Vermilion in late November 1990, and then just a few short weeks later I grabbed Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse. Two prime-time Genesis releases from very late 1990.

Man I saw this thread a couple weeks ago when you made it, just this week I started listening to it, as someone who does data entry and can have headphones on all day, I lovvve podcasts (usually wrestling ones), I got done episode 3 and cant wait til you get a sega genesis, tho the turbografx discussion is interesting since I never had it, really the only part I fast forwarded was the military game, but for just being a one man podcast I am really enjoying it and like how you are going through the months and even like the little touches like saying what songs and movies were big, very cool!

Yeah, I can imagine the first 3 episodes can be a wee bit boring for those that never really messed with the TurboGrafx-16. Episode 4 starts with the Genesis coverage, so you should be good to go with the next few episodes having lots of Genesis stuff..

Episode 8 is now live...

This one is pretty much 100 percent Genesis. Three Genesis games are covered.


Episode 8 starts off the show with a continuation story from Episode 7. It's basically part 2 (of a 3 part story), so it's recommended that you hear episode 7 before hearing this one, either that or skip ahead 27 minutes and just bypass the opening story. Episode 7 started off with a personal story of some "drama" that took place with me back in very late 1990. In Episode 8, I basically just kinda get the listeners caught up on the timeline for the drama story, but the real payoff is coming in Episode 9.

If you want to bypass the opening story, skip ahead to the 27 minute mark...

I cover the final retail gaming purchase I made in 1990. In mid to late December of 1990 I picked up Strider. (warning.... if you're a huge Strider fan, you might not like this part :) ). After Strider, I get into Sword of Sodan from Electronic Arts. Sword of Sodan was a somewhat unlikely EA release, being a hack n slash type game rather than a sports game. The third game covered is Tengen's Hard Drivin'. It's the Genesis port of Atari's arcade game.

Now I'm caught up, thats quite the tale you told.
Aw now I gotta do the bi-weekly schedule, well I'm just glad you're going to continue you it, for a one man podcast this is really great, and I rarely ever get tired listening to it at work, cause I usually listen to wrestling podcasts and some videogames and some almost put me to sleep! You have a good voice for this and I love how detail you are about the games, even talking about some of the ones you missed out on, by the way it'd be cool if you said when you would eventually get a copy of said games, (Though I know that could be hard, like I have no clue what year I got the first john madden game, so Id say early 2000s) that is if you ever did. as well as everything else. Keep up the great work! I can't wait for 1991!

Episode 9 features a lengthy personal story that is a continuation from episodes 7 and 8. If you haven't heard episodes 7 and 8, it's recommended that you skip to the 1 hour 26 minute mark and just listen to the normal chronological gaming coverage, or go back and hear episodes 7 and 8 first. That way, the long story in episode 9 will make more sense...

Episode 9 is covering the time period of all of February into early March 1991. The two games I acquired during this time frame was Aeroblasters for the TG-16 and Dick Tracy for the Sega Genesis.

Episode 10 is now available..


In this episode, I talk about my random discovery of a video game import shop on Ventura Blvd. in North Hollywood back in March of 1991. I'll always remember the first day I walked into that Games Express store.

The two games I cover in the episode include my rental of Power League 3 for the PC engine and Batman for the MegaDrive.


At that time, in mid March of 1991, nobody had any idea that Batman would eventually make it to the Sega Genesis. The thinking at the time was that the import version of Batman would never make it stateside. You can imagine how hyped I was to see the famous Batman Megadrive game that they talked so much about in various EGM issues.
