Who is better at gameplay these days in regards to EAST VS WEST devs teams?

The West has been making better racing games for nearly a decade, over the East. The only series that are really representing Japan now are Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer, and I haven't seen a Ridge Racer game in quite some time. Code Masters, alone, made several great racing games, with the Dirt Series and GRID. Then you had Microsoft Studios with the Forza series and Bizarre Creations with the Project Gotham Racing series.

Visceral Games' (EA) Dead Space (and Dead Space 2) had much better play mechanics, presentation, atmosphere and sound than the mediocre Resident Evil 5 and 6 that Capcom churned out. And The Last of Us did as well.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, had much better play mechanics than the clunky Devil May Cry 4, and God of War III, of course, just blows both of those games away.

Japan competes in the Action RPG genre with the Monster Hunter and Souls series, as does the West with Diablo III and the Witcher III.

Really, the West got better at making racing games? And isn't Forza a simulation racer? I know a friend who gave me a spare copy of part 2 to try out and see what I think of it. It never really grabbed me fast enough to keep me going. Seemed like a typical simulation game and basically for car buff, as my friend is.

RE5&6 I'd never touch. Lost interest in that series with RE4. But do want to buy and play the first two Dead Space games.

I own Diablo III, just never played it yet. Monster Hunter don't interest me at all for some reason, so I'll never know if it's any good anytime soon.

You don't play many video games, but you're making broad generalizations about game design in the video game industry.

I know gaming from my generation. I'm at Sega 16 because I'm a retro gamer. So I've been comparing games from my generation on this matter since 2006. I haven't played many recent enough games, why I started this topic to see what folks who played enough more recent games to fill me in. Not complicated and I've answered this already.

My hunch is still that things haven't changed much from what I've played between the West and East, because the patterns still there. Hence the broad generalization. But in this topic I want actual individual games from same genre comparisons then broad generalizations. Because you can't get a broad idea without getting enough samples in. So get sampling. Show us what you know.

If Japan is struggling in today's gaming market, it's because it has strong competition.

The game development process is different between developers, regardless of where they're from. You can find different anecdotes from game developers and teams of programers, artists, designers, etc. A lot of them go to school for designing games, a lot don't. For all we know, Shigeru is over there with a moldy shit-fungus filled diaper on his head getting electric shocks to his balls each time he comes up with a new mushroom kingdom idea.

Has there EVER been times when Japan actually made better racing games than the West? Because if there are I sure can't think of many. Certainly not from the '90s on, anyway; in the '80s Japan may have been ahead for a while, when they had Outrun while the West had not a whole lot. But by the early '90s the West retook the lead and kept it. In sim racers, there are very few serious car sims from Japan, while there have been many over the years from the West. I'm not talking Gran Turismo stuff, that's not a serious car sim; I'm talking Grand Prix Legends, Sierra's '90s NASCAR games, modern car sims on the PC, stuff like that. In those in-between games like GT, there are some from each region -- Gran Turismo from Japan, Forza and others from the West. In arcade racing Japan has done a lot more of course, but there's just as much or more from the West, and which is better is a matter of opinion.

Forza isn't as much of a racing sim as Gran Turismo is. I think it plays more like Sega GT. I haven't even included Burnout Paradise, or Revenge, which I think are amongst the best racing games ever made.

Dead Space is a pretty amazing survival horror game. It's so much better than the Resident Evil games.

I've never played the Monster Hunter games, but I have heard high praise for the series. I've played a little bit of the Souls games, and thought that they had some interesting angles on the genre. I have, however, played Diablo III to the end. It's an outstanding game.

And I was going to say something about sim racers... I don't want a racing game to get as close to real life driving just for what it's like to drive fantasy cars most can only dream of owning. Because I'm not a car buff nor to I care about owning cars everybody else dreams of. I'm happy enough with a good enough car going from point A-B in real life. So for videogames, I only care for Arcade style racers.

Good. Cause I hate Gran Turismo and it's clones. Though my car buff best friend can't get enough of GT.

You should also put in more time into the Soul series to make sure if it's for you or not. I know in my case it took me up to the 30hr mark of Demon Souls to really get hooked like it was the best things since sliced bread. Before that mark, I almost quit that series forever on several occasions. But after I was finally super hooked, I've replayed the entire series several times already. And not many games I can say the same for...

Forza Horizon is a different franchise, more of a sandbox game.

Much more accessible and fun than Forza Motorsport.

So Forza also has a sub series like Burnout for a sandbox version as well. Never new that. Just looked it up, and there's 2 releases in the Horizon VS 6 of the Motorsport.

I do have Burnout Paradise, but never put in enough time into it to see if it's for me...

I like Sega's '90s arcade racing games, sure, but there are multiple developers on that quality level in the West at the time, and fewer in Japan close to them (Nintendo, yes; Namco, some would say so but not me). And while I certainly quite like some of Sega's '90s racing games (Outrun 2019, Motor Raid, Daytona, Virtua Racing), there are more great racing games from the West.

I pretty much agree with you about disliking sim racers, but when comparing genres I think it's best to compare all parts of the genre, whether or not you like it personally. And car simulation games are a clear win for the West.

Toybox Turbos is basically a new Micro Machines games, right? I haven't played it, but with how much I like the series, I should; I'm sure I'd like it. The Micro Machines series was pretty great.
