I just did commentary about titles not counted. I not did associaton: Pc-Engine CD games counted vs SG-1000 not counted (Independent sentences). What i mean is i could count SG-1000 and Korean games (not because the CDs were counted). And SG-1000 not is an system incompatible. If you insert a SG-1000 cartridge in Mark III it will work.

PCE fans never want admit the CD add-on as an add-on and talk about the libraries separately because that exposes how much the stock PCE library actually sucks.

But it shouldn't be a problem since the Sega CD library also sucks.

However, what seems to irk the PCE fans is that HuCard games vs MD cartridge games don't compare favorably to them technically speaking (sprite animation, parallax, sfx, etc) and the same for PCE CD games vs Sega CD games.

So they want us to swallow their bullshit about the CD not being an add-on and yaddadda; because this way they can put MD cartridge games vs PCE CD games and try to claim superiority, especially on some arcade ports. That's a completely delusional idea though and I've only seem it being well accepted inside the PCE world.

I think that the problem is people with your frame of mind, who are more interested in pissing contests and console warring than taking games for what they are. That and having a predetermined view of how console business works. I played everything as it came out and never thought of Sega-CD games as a library of its own. Both as a technicality and from lack of Sega/Nintendo-is-god political perspective of how things work.

Although putting in such effort to disqualify huge portions of game history is a logic-bending anti-game mentality, so much of what skews people's perspective is the notion that game consoles are made by one company and are designed to work a single way and this keeps things easier to understand. This is why so many "retro" communities have people talking about the PC Engine as a whole as "NEC", because they need a simple singular enemy to pit against Sega/Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft. It would be easy for these people if history/reality bent to their generic perspective, but that's not how all consoles worked. The PC Engine is Hudson's console more than NEC, but again, it's not as simple as that. It's the same with the whole game format subject. It would be nice for everyone who wants everything to work the same simple way if history had played out like that, but it didn't. Even if NEC hadn't only agreed to partner on Hudson's PC Engine on the agreement to push the CD-ROM format before anything was built, it shouldn't really matter given how things play out. Even though Sega My Cards didn't become the dominate format of the SG-1000, they still shouldn't be considered a separate library. NEC/Hudson had a business plan and strategy to roll out the PC Engine and its pre-launch completed-CD-ROM and it's similar to how some of the more recent consoles have worked, such as the Arcade set for Xbox 360 which lacked the sold-separeately hard drive which future games would require, or even true-post launch ideas like the Kinect.

We know now how and why things played out like they did for the PC Engine, but it shouldn't matter as far as technicalities. Just as NES carts with mappers and misc added to carts shouldn't be considered a dozen different library sets, just the fact that the PC Engine and consumers followed through with making the CD-ROM the main format for the console is all that really matters. If the Mega Drive hadn't been so successful outside of Japan, then the Mega-CD would likely have wound up being the Mega Drive's dominant format as well. It's a no-brainer that PC Engine publishers never wasted large cart sizes on HuCards because CDs were so popular and less expensive and risky of an investment. It's pretty ignorant to dismiss existing HuCard games as the best the hardware could do and that CD games, no matter how many appeared near-identical on HuCard, aren't possible on the base hardware. It's also disappointing when more "hardcore" 16-bit fans are so blinded that they dismiss what programmers who are intimately familiar with PC Engine hardware have to say about it as "bullshit".

I know it's hard for jaded console war veterans to accept that PC Engine fans aren't obsessed with finding loop holes and technicalities to retroactively win console wars by disqualifying the competition, but if you were playing the games bitd and not swearing allegiance to a big singular brand like Sega or Nintendo, then you'd understand that it's always been like this.

It's sad that the kind of people who love arguing the behind the scenes politics of crap like who is the single person that made or doomed Sega bitd, brainstorm ways to dismiss the PC Engine altogether instead of championing NEC's history-making move that changed technology as we knew it. You'd think that it would be a goldmine of political discussion for them. It was indeed a gamble to insist on the CD format and it could have bombed before it got off the ground. Instead every console going forward except a couple from one stubborn company support disc-based games. It doesn't matter if the PCE library is great, barely average, or complete shit. Its appeal is irrelevant, as well as any fans arguing which is superior. It is a fact: the system's library medium, which started as an addon, became the dominate medium of the system's library half way through the system's life span. And we're talking about a medium that started out in development, in parallel with the primary hucard medium (the idea of the cd addon was conceived even before the system was released). Not only that but the core system was dropped, and the all-in-one Duo unit became the primary platform coinciding with this event (end of 1991). There is nothing like this in the history of video gaming console world. It bares the responsibility of NEC/Hudson's vision and direction, and earns the recognition of exception. The PCE succeeded where every other console manufacture had failed; the successful evolution of its medium across its life span. What is delusional , is trying to conform the pce's unique circumstance and evolution, into some sorted/rigid structure of every other video game manufacture; to confined something to a definition in which is doesn't belong. That's delusional. And the only bullshit is somehow throwing a MD spin on it (an attempt at inferiority complex?). The above disdain and bitterment type of view has no place in the inclusion and discussion of the PCE's library as a whole.

Now, if you want to attach the CD add-on to a stock PCE and still call it "PC Engine", go ahead.

No way. Hu-Card was dominant because the business was good. When the Mega Drive appeared in Scene they saw that HUDSON/NEC hardware was inferior so they appealed with CD-ROM. This is great and unique history of PCE.

Almost every console had an expansion port. That's not what this is about. Yes, the CD addon started off as addon. Addon = secondary. Hucard = was primary, get's replace but CD unit, all in one CD unit becomes the new sysem, CD format becomes the primary. Again, no where in console gaming history has this happened. Well, maybe in the computer market it has (MSX/MSX2 is the perfect example.. but we can't count those :daze:). Every rule, every structure, every definition has an exception. Exceptions exist because without them, a definition can fail to accurately define and describe a situation, detail, or event. If you want to live in a black and white world, go ahead.
