The Mega Drive was released in Japan in October 29 1988 for ¥21,000, almost exactly a year after the first of the fourth generation consoles - NEC's PC Engine. Although this initially caused slow sales, the Mega Drive soon eclipsed the earlier machine in popularity. However, after the release of the PC Engine CD add-on and the Nintendo Super Family Computer, the Mega Drive soon lost ground. It makes no sense to lump PCE and PCE CD games together if you're not also going to lump Genesis and SCD games together. Whether developers continued to develop for the original console or not is irrelevant.

That's why I mentioned the CDX, Wondermega and X'EYE. You have one console that plays two formats and this thread is about consoles.

Why don't you count Sega-CD games? Do you really consider 32X-CD games a library and add-on of its own, independant of both the 32X and Sega-CD?

The point is to do it consistently. Either you count the CD games for both consoles or you don't. It makes no sense to lump PCE and PCE CD games together but not Genesis and SCD games.

Personally, I probably prefer grouping Genesis and SCD games. As we know, many of the extra capabilities of the SCD were not even used by a lot of games. The developers were also pretty much the same.

1 - When i begin thread the intention was in discuss how the consoles made conversions with technical limitations. The CD add-on change the perspective because we have softhouses developing in special to these devices (JVC is an example);

2 - With add-on the library will increase offering profit at console that not had it. This is not fair with other consoles like Nes, SNES, SMS because it dont had a CD device.

3 - Not is my fault if PCE have more titles in add-on than main rom format (Hu-Card) but if someone wanna count the CD titles do it separately or using the same criteria must agree with Sega-CD, 32 x and PBC add-on in Genesis.

Not necessarily. For example, there's a good chance that if Game Arts / Wolf Team had not started to develop games for the Mega CD, they would have continued to develop Mega Drive titles. The same is true for in-house Sega games. In many cases, developers just switched from Mega Drive to Mega CD. I guess in some cases the CD format attracted new developers, but in many cases the add-on just caused developers to switch. So I don't really see the add-ons as being an unfair advantage, at least in the case of Sega. If those add-ons hadn't existed, there would be many more Mega Drive games.

I treat Sega CD games as being part of the Genesis library, it's an add-on not a separate system. On the PCE it's even more clear cut since Hu-Cards were pretty much abandoned in favour of the CD medium, the add-on became the main console. And yes the regular PCE library is kinda shit.

I do treat the 32X differently but that's because it shouldn't even exist.

I think the difference there though is that those systems did not replace the standard Genesis console as the main system being sold, while the Duo did replace the standard PC-Engine/TG16. For those Sega CD combo systems to be considered the same kind of thing, Sega would have needed to release them and discontinue the standard Genesis system at around the same time.

The most important difference of all is that a majority of the PC Engine library is CD games.

What if after the CD-ROM launched (delayed only because CD games took longer than expected to develop), HuCards were no longer published and the ratio was 10 HuCards and 750+ CD games? At some point common sense has to kick in and you realize that not every console history is exactly the same.

That is independent of the fact that all that the CD-ROM even adds is a couple sound dedicated channels. But I still consider Sega-CD games part of the Genesis library and Disk games part of the Famicom and N64 libraries and Satteleview, Sega Channel, N64 Ram pak, Saturn Ram card, Jag CD, chipped NES/SNES carts and Intellivoice games as real. But I guess it's because I'm a delusional fanboy.

Oh, I agree.

It's just the op asked which console has the most arcade ports. Had they said of consoles x, y and z none of this would have occurred.

Whether the console replaced another to be the dominant or only one available wasn't qualified in the op.

Not a big deal to me really, just trying to make the thread accurate or present a different view point.

Yeah, as I said there are a few exceptions. But most of the Mega CD developers were already developing games for the MD. Wolf Team was infamous for simply adding animated cut-scenes and voices to MD games and sticking them on a CD (Earnest Evans, anyone?). It's pretty easy to see that the MD library would be larger if the MCD did not exist. Instead of Sonic CD and Final Fight we'd have gotten more MD games.
