I know when I look at profiles some will have a location of the member. Is there a way to search for people using that criteria?
Yes. Go to Member List > Search Members (top right corner)> Advanced Search. Type the desired location in the blank field.
But...why?
I had tried that, but it didn't work. I left my location blank so i'm sure others have.
Looking for people to play genesis games with.
Then create a thread in the Genesis sub-forum asking if there are any members from your country (if you're not too shy/reserved, that is).
So you're saying you want to know where each of us are, without us giving out that information?
Yeah, I'm scared.
Well I'm not looking for an address or anything. I'm just looking for a city so I know who to reach out to, but keep up the jokes if they make you feel better.
They do.

Enormous classic gaming heist in various places of the country, news at 11.
Instead of spamming every account you can find, you're better off starting a thread with your location in the title, asking people if they'd like to play games with you.
I not saying all might want to do this. I have given some of my friends a Genesis (or other consoles) to get them interested in playing some retro games from time to time. Hell, one of my closest friends I also give him Dreamcast with four gamepads and some games to get him started. Also makes it easier that they have a console there, all I need is my favorite games.
Didn't we have a location thread eons ago?
I keep my location to the state level. I've run into a couple other folks on forums near me and met with them before, but a general "who wants to meet up?" type thread seems less creepy. If I had someone PM me and say, "Hello, xelement5x , I see you live in Colorado. Would you like to hang around sometime?" I'd have phishing and other red flags go off in my head.
I am just a very private person though, others might be different.
This thread has potential to become something truly great.
yeah, i can respect this - ive met up with a few retro/classic gaming fans from GAF, and they were good folks. i hit up another dude who lives way closer, but i think he thinks i want his games/kidneys, haha.
that said, i make it out to PR, i'm so gonna hit up Melf & see if he wants to catch a drink.
tough talk there, Auburn Hills!:o
Louisville Kentucky btw. I didn't know i hadn't listed it. Why would I care. It's not like somebody is going to find my house...
I agree that this particular approach is a bit creepy and weird.
However, through regional gatherings I got to know personally a lot of people from the Digital Press forums over the years, and they were mostly pretty normal, nice people who had their own lives, and weren't weirdo dead-end loners. My buddy Nick who runs Next-Level Videogames in Blackwood, NJ used to advertise his monthly gatherings on the Digital Press forums, and that's how I learned about them. It led to some solid friendships. 10-15 years ago though the classic gaming community was much smaller and a bit more close knit. These days it's so popular and the internet is a very different place.
I think that's the best way to go about something like what the OP is trying to do is just that, a regional/local gathering in a public place that brings people together. That way people feel comfortable and at ease without getting into privacy issues and the like. But storefronts like Next Level, or the Digital Press store, are very few and far-between sadly.
The 90s trope that OP, and everyone else on the internet looking for people to hang out with is a pedophile or a stalker looking to kill you is simply out of date and out of touch, or you're just spending too much time reading Reddit.
It is a little weird for someone you don't know to PM you: Wanna meet up? I deal with this kind of stuff at work all the time. Product Reps wanna go out for drinks and be my best friend daily. I just rather spend that personal time with loved ones.
A "Per-City" dedicated thread would be more appropriate IMO. As for meeting someone in my area for gaming or swapping my games? I wouldn't mind. It's just that I work 100 to 120 hours per week. Any free time I have I dedicate to my wife. Any time after that, I rather just dedicate to games. No offense. Whatever I have left beyond that, if any, I prefer to manage through a formal endeavor (rather than private PMs).
Damn; and here I am bitching about working 95 hours a week.
I don't really like the idea of inviting strangers on to my boat. But say you did want to get together to play videogames with someone from Sega-16, where would you meet up? Where I used to live there were rooms you could reserve at the local library for free. There was also a local gameshop that would have an open game night on Wednesdays.
Do you really live on a boat like Keanu Reeves in The Replacements?
Why is this necessary. Set up netplay on KEGA and have a blast. Maybe then you can have a creepy meetup. Seriously, if you value your safety at all why would you ever meet someone who cold PMed you because the only thing he knows about you is your proximity.

Phyxius? No, I have a sailboat.
I don't really value my safety or at least I don't worry about it. I do like my privacy sometimes, though. But it's not even about that. With the exception of Cyberball, Sega Genesis was not designed to be played remotely against a stranger.
As for "Kega", I'm guessing it's some kind of computer emulator. I don't have one nor do I care to have one. My mobile is enough for me as far as the internet is concerned. Again, it's not really about that, though. I would rather play classic games the old school way.
Unfortunately, every "classic game event" I have ever attended is all about Nintendo, usually NES/SNES. They are usually geared towards kids, too, not those of us who played the games back in the day.
Naw, it's too cold for gators here. I do have a junkyard dog big enough to take somebody's arm off, though. :fail:
Sorry for the double-post but this topic has been on my mind again today. There are at least a half-dozen posts in this thread that imply or outright say that the idea of wanting to find new people to play videogames with is either "weird", "creepy", or frightening. What's wrong with that? Every friend I've ever had was a stranger to me the first time that I met them. Sure, as a kid, it was easier to find people to play videogames with, you just asked a classmate or the kid from the next block over. But as an adult? It's a lot more difficult. It's even more difficult to find people interested in playing classic videogames rather than the latest games on the market. Why wouldn't someone that has joined a classic game site reach out to other members? What better place to find like-minded individuals?
So okay, maybe the OP didn't word it perfectly. Or maybe he did, I dunno. But since when is it more weird to want to meet up to play games than it is to stay home alone or only have contact anonymously through the internet? I wasn't even suggesting a private meet-up. I was talking about a public place like a local library. Oh sure, we all have heard the story of cute blonde Marilyn who actually lives with a bunch of freaks down on Mockingbird Lane. :p But unless you are an unpopular elected official or something, I think it's relatively safe to meet just about anyone in a public place. I mean, c'mon, a public place! What are some of you so afraid of? :wtf:
Okay, let me try this objectively:
Because I am looking for other people to play videogames.
I have done some reading and this does not seem like a "blast" to me. At minimum, I would need to do the following:
1. Buy a computer (not fun).
2. Set up netplay (not fun).
3. Find someone to play against online, which from this thread (and others) seems unlikely (not fun).
4. Experience technical issues during netplay (not fun):

Yeah, a real "blast". :|
Again, why is this "creepy"? And why, after playing anonymously over the internet, would it be any "safer" than before? :?
Damn, you're pushy.
IF ANYONE LIVES IN NE OHIO PM ME. WE CAN PLAY FINAL FIGHT CD TOGETHER.
