Hummmm i'm from Brazil and can i say that a really like this game, just because the Black Bealt (hokuto no ken) to Master System makes a huge sucess here and everyones like it. So Last Battle for me is a natural evolution from my old love, but is much more harder than the prior game, but when you are kid you have time to spaare and you think "the problem is not the game, the problem is myself to not be good enought" and you keep playing until finish the game, is normal for me in 80's and 90's. So i like it, did you look to the grafics?
I think the game looks good. In fact, I think it was a really good example of the genesis' graphics capabilities at the time, as it was so early in the system's release. In that aspect it does well. I DO think that the game is rather graphically sparse. What's there looks good, but there's not much to look at, and the selection is limited to the point that areas, enemies, and generic game elements get used till exhaustion. Everything looks so similar for long stretches of time, which is think is kinda a shame.
Well even on anime the scene is repetitive, if you take the new games on x360 and ps3 you gonna see the same scenary and atmosphere,
the game (jp) follows the anime in a good way and try inovating choosing a non linear gameplay style, i like it on the time because i didnt see much of that in that era, i have agree that the game not aged too well, but is cool.

Still the best Hokuto no Ken game after Black Belt!
Famicom and Super Famicom HnK games sucks!
Imagine if it had been a SOR1 like brawler game, same kinda graphics but with brawler gameplay.
then if you build up enough special powah you get to initiate a super death blow to the boss!
^ I'm surprised Sega or Capcom or someone didn't do an arcade Hokuto no Ken beltscroller. Would seem to be perfect subject matter for that genre. There is Undercover Cops from Irem, that one looks to be about as thematically close as it gets.
They we're busy making Fist of the North Star games as slow and boring as possible.
Have 2 anime series
Hokuto No Ken 1 and 2
Get the chance to make 2 new HNK games for newer hardware
First game is about the first HNK story.
Second game is.. THE FIRST STORY WITH ADDED SHIT
WTF they pulled a SF2 Turbo on the fans! >_<

Still own both on disc though.
That's because fans don't really care about second series. It is popular consensus that Hokuto no Ken reached its peak with the conclusion of the first, and the rest is an unnecessary lengthening that creates confusion and contradiction with the main plot (which is already confusing and contradictory by itself). So yeah, consider Last Battle an exception.
Does Last Battle honestly even contain much of the story or is it just the bit where heads explode.
I'm not familar much with Fist but the bit where heads explode is my favourite bit.
Heads explode everytime in Hokuto no Ken...
Bodies are sliced too...
I'm joking more than anything, but i'm saying what I actually played of Last Battle (not much because I get game over quickly) there isn't very much story, just a bunch of cutscenes with text boxes that don't seem to mean much or add up to anything.
I get the impression that other than slapping a popular license on, they weren't really all that faithful.
They actually were quite faithful, but everything is very shortened.
Most of the characters from the anime are in the game and so are most (if not all) of the storybits.
Except instead of Bat/Bart saying "I've been wanting for you and Lynn to meet again and thats why I'm covered in scars and its been a hell of a difficult live without you Ken" its been changed to "I wanted you and her to meet again".
Take a look at the GameFAQS page i posted on my first post here...
If you know that the game is from Hokuto no Ken it all makes sense, but if you don't know that, understanding the plot from the game alone is impossible.
The game gives you the overall plot when you start it, with a wall of text that spoilers everything that you are playing for. Same wall of text can be found in the manual. Something is faithful to the anime, something totally isn't. (try it, you just have to launch the game and read, you don't even have to press start)
However, real plot is so confusing by itself that it may be better to stop your comprehension level at "heads explode everywhere".
My mate has a Hokuto no Ken collection. One of my favourite pieces is this Shin figure he's got. He's jump kicking the brain out the back of some giant thug's head, eyes exploding sideways and so on. It really is quite something to behold.
These days I'm more of a Jojo's guy though I reckon, especially after the recent animes for Battle Tendency and Stardust Crusaders. Holy shit they were good.
I always liked the music in this game :)
The game itself is kind of bland, but I played through it many times trying to beat it. I've only ever beaten it twice even though I've been to the final chapter like a hundred times. That "cheat" to continue on the last chapter you reached comes in handy..
I feel like I'm just getting lucky when it comes to beating the final bosses.
I like the music too. That, the backgrounds and characters creates an atmosphere i like a lot. It is true that it is not a great game, but i have played a lot of times till it was relatively easy for me (because i memorized castles and bosses).
The problem with the continue cheat is to restart the chapter with the minimum energy to power up... but it is useful in the last chapters.
I never cared much for the game, and I generally like these side scrolling beat-em ups. I like that it attempted to expand the genre beyond its quarter munching arcade heritage, but I find the combat and pacing too dull to enjoy playing it.
I had to look that up. Best picture I could find.

That's something all right. :p
^ BEHOLD THE POWER OF NANTO SEIKEN!!
Sorry to have 'bugged' you so much. I have played the game plenty of times over the years and my abiding memory of the boss fights is the fact that you have to get as close as possible to land a hit on them but they can still cause you damage with their punches and kicks from half the fucking screen away. Enjoy and defend the game to your heart's content my friend but I find it to be riddled with bad collision detection and is therefore, as far as I'm concerned, cheap as chips.
It was long ago since I last played and found the trick. Didn't really get to know it well enough due to having such a short gaming session but Tor Landeel gave better explanation:
I guess the non-dungeon levels are short enough but it's a shame the movement trick only works in dungeons then. With the amount of obstacles in there it's often kind of counterproductive to move fast too.
I never knew about the FotNS connection until years later so playing "last battle" felt weird and unfinished. It played like a super tedious "kung fu". The blood adds something to the game play but again, it's "kung fu" and even that game only had 5 levels.
Actually, if you learn the nuances of the game, you can move as freely as Shinobi through all of the obstacles including the boulders, rotating axes, falling daggers, and mud balls reigning down from above. The method I use to traverse through the dungeons is to hit left on the pad, then jump + right on diagonal pad. You can do this consecutively, covering more ground thank if you walked or jumped in the typical fashion one normally does.
