What Would It Take As A Genesis Fan To Sell Your Complete Collection?

I recently got to wondering seeing others attempting to sell their complete collections from NES, SNES. Genesis, etc. what it would take for me to sell a complete set of Genesis games (CIB).

Many people seem to sell them in the range of 7500-10000 while others like the Super Nintendo seem to go for a bit more.

What monetary value would you demand for your complete Sega Genesis collection (or other console collection) to be shipped off to some stranger? Or would you never have the thought even cross your mind?

Personally I'd struggle with it a great deal and I'm not sure money would really equate to the same amount of happiness I had while collecting it. :love:

Collecting an entire set for any console just to sell it all away feels like it's just one big money game... Like fishing or trying to hit the lottery on someone who is willing to spend an absorbent amount of money to avoid the time and effort in building a collection in the first place. Like buying an instant collection. To each their own of course, just my impression.

I have no interest or reason to own a complete collection of any kind but if I did and went to sell it, I'd like to think that I'd do it to benefit someone other than myself, family included.

That all said, what little I do own is going with me to the grave because New York State does not permit Viking Funerals... lame.

I've seen a lot of "complete" collections out there. Some for sale, some are not. For any system, actually. But the presiding theme has been that these are the specific selections of their respective owners. Many are complete, but loose. But, most importantly, most of them, tbh, are in very poor condition. I've seen this a lot also in Sega related collections. Overall, I've noticed that the collectors have minimally-lowered their standards and have rushed their buying habits to grab the cheapest they find, no matter the condition (as long as it's complete, fits their minimally-set conditions, etc.).

The point I'm trying to make is, anyone who pays "top price" for any "complete" collection out there is simply out of his/her mind. There are just so many variables not being taken into account. Even if it's a re-seller, there is minimal revenue to acquire from them. If it's a private collector, money is definitely going to be flushed down the drain.

The best way to go about completing anyone's collection is one at a time; selecting each and every single item and preferred condition. After all, that's half the fun: cleaning those new acquisitions and bringing them up to one's standards.

Would I personally sell my collection? :? That'll be the day I've given-up in life as we know it.

While collecting a full CIB Genesis, I didn't think I'd be willing to part with it. Now that the set is, for all intents and purposes, complete (I haven't been able to track down Outback Joey), it is actually not that difficult at all to imagine selling the games. Though, as I don't need the money now, there is no reason to rush a sale, or no reason not to do it on my terms. The thrill, the happiness you mention in your first post OP came from collecting the games - the process. The process has evolved a bit, I'm upgrading things, and finding variants or buying more games factory sealed, but now there isn't the same attachment to the full set as there was the incomplete set. I got great satisfaction from collecting the games, the hunt, etc. Its wonderful being able to pick any title off the shelf and boot it up, but that wouldn't be a reason for me not to sell. I'm sure I'd keep a few of my favorites and for anything else an ever drive would certainly be an option.

As far as value to sell? No way I would sell it in one shot. I can't forsee any individual buyer paying me enough. I think I would do much better selling each game individually with $0.99 auctions. Mentally, I put the set at around $20k, not counting duplicates and sealed games. If I were to acquire a CIB Outback Joey, I'd tack another $5k onto my estimate. Regardless, I'd do a thorough inventory and price it all out before selling any of the games.

Also, I'd only sell it if the sale had a purpose. One scenario I could see playing out would be waiting a few years and then selling the games to provide a downpayment for a rental/investment property. If I at least sold the set with that kind of goal in mind, I could always point to that property as the product of my collection.

Never. I would rather give away all my recent xbox/ps stuff.

I have assembled the games that I possess (and they don't need to be CIB for me) with a fair amount thought into do I want to own this game with quite a bit of researching from watching videos and reading many reviews. I have no need for the bad ones nor the room and not every game is my taste they are weeded out first. The thought of owning every game complete in box in an systems entire catalog let alone multiple systems is just nonsensical to me in regards to the space needed and founds furthermore why would I own something I no interest in or want to play.

But hypothetically if I did, wouldn't it be better to selling them off one by one and to get a higher price per tittle? I think to selloff everything all at once is foolish as the buyers that would be attracted to such sale would be looking for a value price.

Something totally out of the blue. I'll never sell.

I'm 38 games away from a complete US set for the Genesis but I don't know what I'll do with it after that. I mean as of now I proudly display it like most people - on bookshelves next to their gaming consoles etc. I play them regularly and my girlfriend loves to play them and she actually likes a lot of the games I never got into that much (Rolo To The Rescue, Granada (shes loves this one), and Tyrants) so I do like seeing the games/effort appreciated which would make selling it extremely difficult. I would also need an absurd over-payment (which I wouldn't get) for the set but then I look at things like paying off a chunk of my house or refinishing my kitchen and I'm like should I ditch the games for more 'adult' stuff?

My mind immediately races back to the memories of collecting these (minus the ebay purchaes) or my first memories of playing it and I get a little giddy inside. I love popping in Thunder Force IV to my 1990 Yamaha Receiver with matching speakers and cranking that mofo to epic levels to relive the sound and feeling of when I played it originally back in 1993. It would probably crush me at least for a while to get rid of the set - I mean think of all the effort and resources invested as is.

Sometimes I feel like black_tiger or Eyedeeno76 and think - sell all the 'lame' titles and keep the good ones and just have two or three bookshelves instead of seven. It's a good idea in theory because I'll only play those good games right? I don't foresee myself struggling through that Barbie game again or walking right endlessly in Barneys Hide and Seek Adventure or playing Math Blaster Episode One more than a few minutes for brushing up on my basic math (haha). But then I think well it doesn't hurt to have them around to maybe review/revisit or tell them the story of picking up that Barbie game in front of all my guy friends and buying it while they made fun of me for getting it (yes yes I get it - it's Barbie).

It's difficult to decide one way or another. It really is. It's like giving away memories in exchange for money.

If/when you sell the Barbie game (LOL) or any of the other games, you don't have to sell the memories too. You can keep them for life.

Trying to sell it all in one lot is a no-no, unless you're desperate for money. You'll typically lose 40-70% of its value since most prospective buyers will be resellers looking to flip it. Typically, the more its worth, the more you'll lose. If you want to sell, you do it one-by-one, as I'm currently in the process of doing. It'll take a long time, especially if you have some marquee (four figure) items, but it'll pay off.

It always tickles me when people say they'll never sell their collection. You should know that I used to emphatically proclaim that too. "It's my life... who I am. I'll never get rid of it. It shows the world, I'm ME." However, at some point, your collection will outgrow your passion and it'll become more of a burden than a symbol. After that, you'll come to find that selling it is as wonderful a feeling as acquiring it once was.

I have no desire or cash need to get rid of them so for me it'd probably need to be a rather ridiculous cash payout.

Though, times and people change. I would not have a problem getting rid of many things, but others would be quite difficult to part with since I had so many friends help me along the way. If I sold them I feel like I would be betraying their trust when they sold me the items as I worked towards a goal that they helped with.

All my Sega CD games in particular mean a lot to me, as I have been a very big fan of that addon for a long time.
