New Ghostbusters

Think about how many movies in the eighties focused on fantasy, be it of the D&D variety, or aliens, magic, or just plain adventure. They could NEVER make a Goonies movie today. All of the kids would be obese morons screaming about spilling their chocolate milk on their iPads or something. Cripes, nobody even remembers that there was a remake of Red Dawn, or Total Recall, and people have almost forgotten the abominable Robocop remake, absolutely bereft of the dark humor and physical sarcasm that the original so tightly embraced.

The mystery of discovery and invention is gone by now. A Goonies movie will certainly flop nowadays.

I think a Goonies movie today could be done, and done well.

The biggest problem isn't that there isn't the talent out there to get it done. It's that they need the studios to put it out... and they, by and large, are going to make it a movie by committee "safe" film that they try and make as broadly appealing as possible.

Look at this Ghostbusters trash. Does anyone here get the feeling that a creative team honestly had a flash of inspiration to make GB with an all female cast? That they just had this idea that just worked... and that they fought to get it done to get their creative vision made?

Anyone?
Because I sure as hell don't.

And that's what happens to most movies now. All or in part. The only exceptions are the small indie movies, but those get much more limited release (if any at all). Same with some foreign films.

Ghostbusters is one of those films that just doesn't need remaking anyway. I'll probably see it, just because two of the cast members I find quite funny, and also because it is just throwaway stuff. Those two reasons are enough (at least for me) to watch it without even having to compare it to the original. I'll probably not even buy this, It'll be entertaining enough to watch on TV when it gets there. I'm at the very least ambivalent about it just based on the (admittedly less than stellar) trailer.

Again, the female cast element is completely a side (non) issue and it is not any kind of indication of 'the way society is now' in that is not inspirational or non inspirational to have the principle cast one gender or another. Women have been chosen for the role, and frankly, so what? We had men last time, women are as valuable to the world as men, so why not cast an all female principle cast?

All the best films these days are a bit more low key as mentioned above, big movies that had more depth - Jurassic Park springs to mind - do seem to have gone by the wayside, with films of its ilk being rehashed / booted / semi sequalised (Terminator - ugh!) and turned into throwaway garbage. Batman has been rebooted nicely, though I personally have only seen the first two. They were OK, but I can see the quality beyond my own personal opinion.

The best film I've seen recently is Ex Machina - low key but with top drawer special effects so it has that great crossover feeling of blockbuster spectacle mixed with solid and authentic movie making and performances. Great sci fi, great cinema, a bit like the modern day equivalent of T2 in that it depicts similar themes but with less of an action bent. T2 was a nice amalgam of 80s action spectacle with more cerebral science fiction themes. A movie like that today just gets made into tripe (Salvation for example) with less focus on sci fi. Ex Machina is its reverse, which seems at the moment to be the only way like a movie like this can be made - about which I'm not complaining.

Here is to hoping they keep making quality content single plot SciFi flicks like they used to. I'm talking about awesome great movies like Phantoms, Species, Sphere, The Relic, Event Horizon, Supernova, The Abyss, etc...

The last one I saw of this sort was Pandorum. I would go as far as Ex Machina too, but it was far too existential. Not a plot element I personally dislike, but one that does certainly puts me off when trying to watch an indie style SciFi (it blatantly uses dialogue to try to mask how cheap the movie is. There is no need for that. Ex Machina was borderline in that sense).

I'm sorry, but the new Batman movies sucked big time too. I mean, seriously, the cartoon series and animated flicks are worlds better. That alone tells you how lame Hollywood is.

The new Batman movies were EXCELLENT action movies. Oscar worthy, IMHO.

...I fucking hated them as Super Hero films.


...Why? Because they were NOT.

Do you consider Batman a superhero?

it's hard to shake the feeling that it was done just for pandering's sake - that and every original Ghostbuster dropped out of showing up in the new one. Ha, the director said he put in "the four funniest women I know," which begs the the question of just how many women does he know? They certainly don't come off that way in the trailer, lol.

I can't remember if I saw it here or elsewhere, where someone pointed out that if a trailer has to explicitly spell out what box each of the characters falls in to ("you're the genius!" "you're the sassy street-smart New Yorker!"), it's a pretty bad sign for how smart they think their audience is (and how bad the writing is). The original Ghostbuster's trailer by contrast sells you on the overall premise and lets the characters' personalities speak for themselves.

Oldest writing device: "Show. Don't tell".
