The Genesis is home to many wonderful RPGs of all types, including a beloved Zelda clone called Crusader of Centy. Many of the consoles owners actually played this version before any Zelda game, and the overall quality of the adventure and its great presentation left an indelible impression on them. Join us as we revisit this 16-bit classic!
I would never consider games like this("Zelda clones," if need be) roleplaying. Keith Courage would have to be considered one, based on the same merits RPG nerds would come up with to lump these games in the same vein.
I've enjoyed the few time I've played through CoC, especially as I'm not one for considerably lengthy games anyway. I'd just assume all the Genesis action/adventures were hidden gems, and not especially meant to be sold on the same scale as Zelda, and they're all enjoyable on their own merits(minus half of them being isometric...). Thing is, I have played A Link to the Past first, but I never spent time thinking about similarities when I played through Centy. I mean, aside from the obvious same genre thing.
Seems to be an issue gamers have nowadays, is that they always want to make comparisons. Like back in '89-'98 I would have given a shit how close any of the ports on this console were to any of the arcade cabinets. My 14 year old self sure as hell didn't give a damn about how evidently butchered the first couple Mortal Kombats were(apparently in comparison to their SNES counterparts as well). Still got both fighters with blood, responsive controls, and all the fatalities.
Appreciate what you do have for what it is, instead of bitching about what it isn't. Whether it compares to a Zelda game or not, only a fool(really holding back here) would deprive themselves of playing a good game because they don't think it will.
Well, maybe it was different for you. Myself, I distinctly remember magazines back in the day, as well as kids at my school, calling Soleil (as it was called around here) a "Zelda clone". And even though I only knew "A Link to the Past" from screenshots printed in magazines, even I felt that the two games shared a very similar look and aesthetic. Heck, even the "SEGA Magazine", which exclusively covered MAster System, Mega Drive and Game Gear games (and lator on Saturn as well), acknowledged the similarities, while still heaving praise onto the game.Quote:

People tend to categorize things, especially when they feel kinda similar without ever reaching the same quality. That's why games like "Jazz Jackrabbit" or "Zool" are regarded as Sonic-clones, since they are all platformers at (comparatively) high speeds - even though they have very different core mechanics.
I guess I'm just sick of people wanting to make everything about comparisons. I think the magazine subscription I did have ran out before Centy came about, so I didn't know anything about the game until maybe '97 the earliest(got into emulation around the tail end of '96, where I had already played through ALttP on the official hardware earlier in the year). I still found it to be just about as enjoyable, though at that point in time I still had a ton of enthusiasm for everything video games related(especially when there were hundreds of games on the 2D consoles to explore now). I mean, I'd still enjoy CoC if I started it today, but everything was that much better when you were even looking forward to where the industry was going in the future.
As a kid, I always thought it was cool seeing the Tower of Babel in a video game serve its actual Bibilical purpose, unlike FFIV, which simply had it in name only.
Also, the soundtrack was pretty good. Sometimes, I think it's easy to forgive a lot of a game's flaws if the soundtrack is really good (unless the game itself is either dull or Sonic '06 levels of broken). :p
I never played this when it came out, i figured this was the genesis' "lttp" so i skipped it. i went back a few years ago and just couldn't get into it. didn't seem like a bda game though, just the story didn't do much for me.
Soleil starts off great, and get's better as it goes along, until you get to the end. Final part of the game was just terrible imo. Like they threw it up at the last second and just called it quits.
Just beat it a few minutes ago. I guess that's the thing with Genesis action/adventures, is that they're too focused on moving forward, rather than on exploring. Little to no reason to backtrack, since when you gain a new item/ability, it's rarely needed in an area you've visited before.
So wait, what are you saying? You weren't a fan of LttP, therefore skipped CoC?Quote:

Oh. Just found that odd. Normally when I'm into something and I really love it a lot, I want more of the same. But I guess I can also understand boring of something if I've done it only once, even though I enjoyed it. Just seems more rare for the later to happen.Quote:

It just improved the original without being as hard as part 2 or as needlessly "epic" as the ones to come (I'm looking at you n64 titles...).
