Should SEGA make film adaptations of their games?

Hey guys. We recently were at Game Over Videogames in Houston, TX asking gamers the question, "What SEGA video games would you like to see on the big screen?" The response echoed our sentiments.

While it would be awesome if handled correctly with the right director, the odds of getting great films based on franchises like Golden Axe and Streets of Rage are next to none.

One of the customers in the video said, "I'd love to see a Ranger X movie". Now THAT would be awesome. It would never happen.

Anyway, would love to know your SEGA film wishes and also what you think of the video. Kind of a new direction for us. Thanks guys.

Going by how badly Hollywood butchered every comic book movie for the past 20 years. Heck no.

But I will say I'd love to see an animated movie or show of it along the quality of the Bruce Tim DC comic book animated stuff. By people who aren't total Hollywood hacks and actually know and respect the source material.

Shinobi could be a good place to start. Niall Blomkamp could do a good job with that.

No game company should ever make a film adaptation.

Well, the Marvel movies over the last decade have generally been pretty good. Some of them are a bit generic, but I'd hardly say they've "butchered" them. Obviously they are never going to be strictly canonically and faithful to the source material -- they've got to take some liberties to widen the appeal a bit to the masses.

That said, 2016 will see the releases of Assassin's Creed and World of Warcraft, and neither of them look particularly good to me. I don't really care about video game adaptations of movies. Many of them have pretty flimsy backstories anyway.

This is what's wrong with everything. I want a product based off creativity & creator freedom, and not mostly based off market research and other statistics like it is these days (even BioWare/EA games now have the option to upload all information on how you play their games). Trying to make something that pleases everyone just results in more mediocre or worse. It's like saying lets create a videogame that merges every genre into one so that it appeals to everyone.

They did a House of the Dead movie.

I can see success for a carefully made Shinobi, or Yakuza series on Netflix or HBO.


Look at Daredevil. It's gritty and it's got ninjas and other crazy shit in it.

Yeah, Shinobi seems to have the best potential for adaptation, after Phantasy Star. If it's going to happen, they need the right production either way. If you get the kind of people that have done 90% of the video game adaptations so far, you already know what you can expect before production starts...

Still, the Marvel movies are pretty good and reasonably faithful to the comics.

I mean, look at the last couple of Star Trek movies -- those are just generic action/adventure movies starring the Star Trek cast. I'm not necessarily saying they're bad, but they hardly feel like Star Trek at all; I think that's how Assassin's Creed and WoW are going to turn out. I get complaints about movies like that.

I am not willing to lump the Marvel movies into the same group as those though... they've done a good job, so I do think it's theoretical possible to make a good movie. Besides, sometimes deviating from the source material is a good thing. Having read a lot of the original X-Men comics, some of the plot lines are cringe-worthy. It would be awful seeing some of that stuff on the big screen. X-Men is maybe not the best example to use, because those movies aren't particularly great. Iron Man/Captain America/Avengers have all been rock-solid though.

'Forgettable' is how I would define them. But hey, apparently that's what people like and pay tickets for, so...

The problem is, I think that many videogame properties would be better suited as animated films. But usually they do these as live action.

Something like NiGHTS or Jet Set Radio would be fun, but it would be hokey if it's not animated.

For non Sega related properties, the only thing I'd want to see is a live action Jade Empire done by the guys who did the Raid movies.

For Sega... Beyond Oasis? In a style like Pirates of the Caribbean but not nearly as bloated.

I second Shinobi. But honestly, I think most of Sega's stuff never had very compelling plots to begin with. Besides Panzer Dragoon, which is another good candidate.

Soleil/Crusader of Centy would make for a fun full Anime movie.

Imagine the art of Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force 1 in a very awesome animated flick or show.

Didn't they already make an adaptation of Shining Hearts to anime? That's the new generation of SF, now fronted by a hentai loli artist as lead character/graphic designer.

^ I don't care one bit about any of the post Camelot made Shining games. And I was talking about the art style of the first two games only. Though the art style of StHA and SF3 would be nice too. There's something really cool about the art style of the first two games.

This is an interesting topic. I agree with most comments here that something like this will never happen.
But that being said, I do think Phantasy Star could be made into a good movie.

Alis off to avenge Nero uncovers the darker truth about the threat looming over the Algo star system.

Anyone tackling this would have to be careful about characters like Dr. Mad. It would be important to include all named NPC but they couldn't be silly for it to work. Dr. Mad could be one of many people/robots affected by the presence of Dark Force, the same as Lassic.

And just like in the game I think the blend between Sci-Fi and fantasy would be excellent.

Just give me an cheesy 80s style action film based on Streets of Rage and I'd be happy.

Not that it's a Sega property, but after that, which clears a scant few things up about the story, I'd be up for an Alien Soldier movie/anime mini series.

That's the exact opposite. I'd love to see Solomon Kane as a 16-bit video game. Perhaps like Golden Axe with the occasional gun pick-up. Plus with the violent nature of the license, it would have fit the Genesis perfectly.

Solomon Kane was created by Robert E. Howard (Also known as the creator of Conan the Barbarian) back in 1928 during the great depression. The first Chakan comic book by Robert A. Kraus came out in 1993.

With that said looking I'm not looking forward to the Sonic movie.

I'm not sure, but Fallout has been screaming for a movie release since the first game. The Road & The Book of Eli were almost there, if you threw in a bit of Mad Max, you have the best of both worlds. But with most movies, the right director, screen writer, and casting usually makes or breaks something like that.
Toejam & Earl should have had an animated movie. With slap bass all over yo' face.

Get Uwe Boll out of there and it could have been good. Though I do have to say that the ship captain was easily the best character in the movie.

Vectorman the motion picture, DO IT! Back in the nineties if SEGA coulda gotten Fred Savage n Stan Winston (of Monster Squad fame) to do a Kid Chameleon movie, that could've been some pretty serious shit. Maybe Oscar material. If they tried it today they'd just get Shia Lebeoughf & ruin it.

I've always wanted to see Streets of Rage made into a film personally. It could be a really gritty 80's style balls-out-the-bath violent action/martial arts film. In my mind's eye I see it as a blend of Scarface, The Warriors and Assault on Precinct 13 (the original Carpenter classic not the shit remake).

I've just seen that alternate 90's reality and it's beyond awesome! Tim Burton directed Batman Forever and it was a big box office hit. After his Oscar winning performance in Kid Chameleon, Fred Savage went on to have more success in the big screen adaptation of Landstalker, where he played the treasure hunter Nigel. In politics Michael Jackson ran for the US presidency but was narrowly beaten by Jesse Ventura who served two terms in office. In the video gaming world the 32X was never released, the Sega Saturn destroyed Sony's Playstation in sales in both the US and Europe and the Dreamcast became one of the most popular games consoles of all time. Sega are still going strong to this day and at a packed E3 they released tech specs and sneak peeks at their new games console, the Sega Hyper Drive. Launch titles are rumoured to be Streets of Rage: Redemption, Sonic Stories: Moebius Wars, Shinobi: Return of Neo Zeed and Golden Axe 7 (who said originality was dead?). Ah well, I can dream!

I loled in a good way at fred savage playing the lead role in kid chameleon.

It boggles my mind that sega never whored out sonic on the big screen i mean they've been beating that dead horse for 30 years now. I mean they've done everything else....cartoons...toys...etc.

I would love to see a eternal champion movie but im afraid hollywood would ruin it like everything else and it may turn into a mortal kombat annihilation or street fighter chun li's revenge

I'm guessing in this universe Stallone also became the biggest box office star of all time with the Terminator franchise, Stunning Steve Austin launched a successful movie career with the Wolfenstein movie whilst he was WCW champion, Mudhoney's album Nevermind went 10x platinum, Sonic & Mario at the Races became Sega's most successful racing sim ever and everyone is a homeowner.
