Shin Megami Tensei
The Sega CD has a great selection of RPGs, but most were sadly left in Japan. Those willing to brave the language barrier should consider playing Shin Megami Tensei, an installment in the long-running and popular series that was never brought to the West. It's a great upgrade over the Super Famicom version, and there are FAQs online to help with the plot! Read our full review for all the details.

This is the nicest version of the game. The PCE version is just a straight port of the SFC version with extra content. The Mega-CD version is so well polished that it's vlear how much the developer cared about the game. It was one of the very first Mega-CD games I got around 1996/97. Really delivered the kind of experience I was looking for in Sega/Mega-CD RPGs.

damn, that looks good - and the spoiler-free bits of that review made me really wanna play it, finally! i've had the SNES one in a translated repro forever, but i'd heard a while back that there might be a fan translation effort in the works? i should really hit up cj_iwakura about it.

I adored the SFC version when I first played Aeon Genesis's translation of it, to the point where I made a second save right at the last big decison point so I could get all three endings. The Mega CD version is awesome, too, but I never got much farther in that one than just past the huge twist the review mentions.
