A long time ago this happened.
Once I got used to how the jumping mechanic worked and learned to tolerate the cheap kills when he'd fall too far or slingshot a third of the way across a stage into some sneezy stupid stand still orange alien I found it amusing enough to actually finish it, but really it is not aged the best. It could be worse though, you could play the sequels in order which go from average(1) to not good (2) to ...god take my eyes! (3D.)
"besides the awful controls and the shitty level design, the game's not so bad!"
wow, what an argument.
Did I once say shitty level design? No, I didn't. Yes, I'll agree it's not the best, and it is sloppy, but I'd hardly call it shitty. More like incredibly not well thought-out and unfair.
EDIT: As for an "argument", there isn't one - I know the game itself is shitty. There's no point in even trying to defend it. All I'm saying is, there's still some good stuff about it. It's not that bad of a game once you look past it's flaws (which are many). That was the whole point of this thread.
Fix the easy deaths and its not such a bad game, would proudly display it next to Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel / Mr Nutz / Zero The.. bat.. thing..
The thing about Bubsy is why would I bother playing an average platformer in a generation full of good to great platformers?
Bubsy is mediocre, not the worst thing in the world but it's a 5/10 for me. There are a lot of better platformers out there. Bubsy was overrated.
As someone who has beat Bubsy 3 times in his life, including last year, and has a stack of games he beat last year still left to get through this year... I have been dreading playing it again. And that stack included gems like Wayne's World and NBA All-Star Challenge
When I played it for the first time in a friend's house I was impressed, but then I played it a few times and couldn't enjoy it at all. Average game with nice graphics. I think it was successful sure to that 90s "attitude".
