Nintendo, What went wrong

Nobody can recover from a sick burn like that, it has been eating away at their collective subconscious for all this time, maybe they realised along time ago they couldn't compete, but Nintendon't give up, they have Mario, the most kick ass plumber known to mankind. Bless em.
DISCLAIMER-
I would hate to see Nintendo go down like Sega, but the corporate steamroller of Sony/Microsoft stops for no one. Either get out of the way, fight back, or get squashed.

The best commercials of any era were those having the Genesis poke fun at Nintendo.

Whomever created that jingle should be on a beach earning 20%.

Sega deserves a lot of credit for making those awkward teen years more manageable.

Looking at Nintendo's operating income it's easy to identify when and what went wrong with Nintendo:

Nintendo completely botched the transition from DS/Wii to 3DS/WiiU.

3DS is going to sell a total of about 65 - 70 million units.
Sales in Japan were excellent but outside Japan they were disappointing due to competition with mobile, 3DS was also subsidized by a strong price cut early on that hurt Nintendo bottom line.

WiiU is going to sell a total of about 14 - 15 million units which is the worst performing Nintendo console after Virtual Boy.
What is really worrisome is that with WiiU it's clear Nintendo had no idea what's so ever on why Wii and DS were such a big hits, it was an iterative, safe and very bad copy of Wii for all the wrong reasons.

Kidding aside, I'm not sure for how long Microsoft will be interested in the dedicated console business.
All the hints point to them merging the unit to their computer business.

Apparently, you misinterpret history. That was simply the zenith for Sega; not the end for Nintendo. Everything else Sega did was downhill from there. The Dreamcast was a nice distraction, for about a year or so, but Sega never did recover after the Genesis/Megadrive crescendo.

I think from a "Sega being awesome" the DC was their high point. Some great games in beloved series, taking some risks with new IP, and just generally being really awesomely experimental with some good stuff.

That first couple years of the DC was a real high note. The problem with it is that Sega couldn't cope with staying in the market.
No matter how much they did right with the DC (and not that it was perfect mind you), their past mistakes, combined with a very strong Sony, was simply too much for them to overcome.

They likely would have needed to be able to not only weather a rough market for 2+ years, but to be able to sustain a really strong market presence with tons of marketing and games to offer and entice people to look away from the PS2.

You look at the DC vs PS2 library and it was damn near a year before anything on the PS2 could touch even some of the DC's launch games in looks. Sega just didn't have what it took financially to really take advantage of that.

what makes me happy in hindsight though is that sega went out with a bang. dreamcast is the stuff of legends today claimed by everyone, while nintendo will go out with a rotten fart. their legacy will forever be remembered for wii, wii u and soon the shitty nx

Wii? Not unless the "casual" explosion goes bitter (Farmville and the complete ruination of a few franchises don't really count).

Wrong. As a Sega fan my fave is still the Sega Saturn. And most look at it as a blight.

Saturn's reputation only increases as time goes by though.

Most people I know have praise for the Saturn, I love mine. Sure is no Megadrive though but then honestly what console is?

What bang??? They're still around. They're still in the slow demise - putting out crappy software after the DC got ditched. For the longest time, I just hoped that it was a long shite spell they were having/working through - nope. If anything, they are the definition of a long wet fart after abandoning the DC. Such a disappointment.


EclecticGroove: The DC was pretty amazing when it came out. Sooo many people were hyped about it, myself included. The graphics and everything were fantastic. I really thought Sega was gonna take a lead in that generation. It was awesome the first year or so. I remember thinking.. what went wrong?
