You take away the DX8 light source gimmick from Riddick and you're left with a very bland looking game, with single layer textures.
Nothing comes close to what Rogue Squadron 2 was doing during that generation.

Rallisport 2 was amazing looking but very inconsistent. For instance, in time trials the car looked great with awesome reflections and real time shadows. In these instances it was probably the best looking racing game from that gen. But in some other modes or tracks you had a different, simpler, model and simplified effects (a simple shadow under the car for instance).
Burnout The Revenge was the best looking racing game, hands down. F-Zero GX was'nt too far behind it.
Why label effects a gimmick ? I don't get this with Mode 7 or here tbh . Advanced lighting and dynamic lighting can add so much to a game mode its atmosphere and overlook , nothing much shows this better than Alien Maries with the dynamic lighting in the demo, compared to the real game we got, to see and its a was a total letdown in the Gfx dept .
Yeah, there wasn't much to touch Star Wars II on the Cube, but it had issues with framerates and all that . To me, there was nothing that came close to Orta, Oddworld Stranger or Conkers on the Xbox . Conkers put some 360 titles to shame inthe gfx dept
Rallisport II had the best backrounds to any racer of that gen and all at 60 fps too imo. Its car models let the game down badly I agree; To me only SEGA GT 2002 had Car Models that looked as good as if not better than GT IV . Sega GT 2002 also had some stunning lighting effects, a lovely looking speed blur filter , fablous depth of field effects onthe replays and hands down the most impressive and best 5.1 to any game of that gen . The 5.1 was somthing else and loved the engine purring when the turbo kicks was inaneQuote:

Good videos, thanks for sharing Trekkies. It's quite interesting how 'enclosed' the FPS genre is; in the sense that the engines are few in number and tweeked for other systems, and used as a base for other FPS games.
Is this true for all genres then? Is there like, a ''Sonic engine' or similar?
PGR looked amazing , Forza didn't look brilliant for me and only run at 30 fps (tbh it was handling a lot of complex stuff) GT IV had the best car models are of any racer of that gen - That was back inthe days when Polyphony digital were good -they're a bit of a joke now and so far behind Turn 10 its not even funny. I also have to say Colin McRae 3/4 looked stunning too and Richard Burns Rally is most prob the most realastic car sim ever made ... Such a shame noone played it :(
Forza's car models were on par with GT4. Once you start using the paint editor in Forza, it starts favoring Forza. Either way, Burnout The Revenge blows them both away.
Oh, and I think that GT5 looks pretty good. It just doesn't have the depth of the previous games.
I think gran turismo 6 was much better. I like all gran turismo and have yet to find a bad one. it is hip to hate on them though just like it's hip to hate on pes, despite them having the best football games again for a number of years
I never got around to buying GT6. It's currently $15 at Walmart.
been like that since gran turismo 5.
Gran Turismo 6 is fantastic. Probably my favourite racing game of all time that isn't Forza Horizon
