Yeah...I'll echo: Sonic Mania is really good.
There was a great amount of joy I had when the remixed Chemical Zone music started up, and just blowing through those loops like I did in Sonic 2.
Man, there was a huge smile on my face. XD
I'm going to be bouncing back and forth between this and Monster Boy The Dragon's Trap for the next couple days.
I played through the first two-and-a-half zones today after work (due to the delay of the PC version I can currently only play Sonic Mania on the Xbox One at the office), and it's wonderful. Brought a big smile to my face. I love how the first act of each retro zone sticks fairly closely to the originals, mixing elements from various acts together into a single level, and then on the second act the game goes wild and adds all sorts of new gameplay ideas. The second battle against Robotnik was also a massive surprise. No spoilers, but I thought it was a brilliant throwback to the heyday of Sonic and a great example of the creators thinking outside the box for this game.
What a terrible review. My favorite part is when he complains that there aren't enough features to the game and says this:
What does that even mean? How long does it take to test out the local multiplayer?! More likely, the reviewer didn't have anybody to play with... :Panda:Quote:
Yes, there's a multiplayer option, both cooperative and competitive (though due to deadlines we were unable to test it)
Just finished downloading Sonic Mania and Night Trap. What a wonderful day!
Not a fan of all the rehashed content. Obviously it's there for "do you remember?" marketing (a la Force Awakens and all the other retreads). I get it. But what Christian & company built was good enough to stand on its own. They should have had the guts (and backing from Sega) to just roll with all-new levels. The S3&K opening, the blue sphere levels, the save slot menus, the remade Green Hill and Chemical Plant Act 1s... It's too much.
who else thought the robotnik battle on chemical plant zone was unexpected and awesome?
Theres a new Sonic getting great reviews, and Night Trap just got a release.
JNCOs are next
the wait for the PC version is painful >.<

But hey, it's worth it. We get Sonic 1 FOR FREE. Again!
I agree. Whenever new material tries to make people feel nostalgic like "remember this?", I'm like, "yeah, I do remember this. I just played/watched the original last week or so". If I want to experience these old things that give me nostalgia, I'll stick with the original Star Wars/Sonic/whatever. I understand people want that same experience of when they played/watched these classics for the first time, but simply referencing these things isn't the same "new and exciting" experience that we all had years ago, it's just making you remember that experience.
I'm fine with the special stages being revisited concepts. Sonic 3D Blast followed on from Sonic 2's special stages and they were good enough for me. But remakes of actual zones are just unnecessary, particularly considering we already have Sonic Generations for that. And Green Hill Zone in particular has been done to death.
But yeah... I already knew about that. I won't be able to sit down with this game for at least a few days. If that turns out to be its biggest shortcoming I'll be fairly pleased.
Sonic Mania is amazing.
