I very much dislike that music and wish not to hear it again.

I expected Sonic Forces to be bad, but it surpassed all expectations. No buy from me.
What's wrong with it? So far it's looking better than Lost World.
There are so many truly cool touches in this game that playing Sonic Mania is an absolute joy and it easily ranks alongside Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which in my humble opinion is easily one of the greatest 2D platformers ever made. The bit in Sonic Mania's version of classic Sonic 2 level Oil Ocean Zone where Sonic's flame shield sets fire to the oil and starts a hazy screen blur as the oil starts burning up? Sheer genius!
Really surprised by how Tee Lopes nailed the Sonic Mania tunes. Blast from the 90s past and full of that Sega vibe.
The nuanced graphical touches, attention to detal, and subtle references to past Sonic games are so great in Sonic Mania, that I feel it's almost too much. For the die-hard fans its cool to poke through levels and see all of the references, but man, it feels like they tried too hard in some places to fit some reference to something from past games in every nook and cranny of every single level.
I submitted a full Hands-On to Melf, should be published here on the site next week with my full thoughts on Sonic Mania. I'm a bit conflicted about the game as a whole.
I bought Sonic Mania about a week ago and beat the game with all Chaos Emeralds today. Here are my thoughts:
*The graphics and music are really nice! I really like they went old school for real with this game.
*I am not in favor of the decision of including rehashed zones, but at least they put new content, features and level designs in them, so it was OK in the end.
*I like all the new zones, except maybe the final one which was just OK and not too fun too play.
*Almost all the bosses were fun to play against, and they were really creative in their design, even the rehashed ones. The Puyo Puyo boss was fun to play.
*The new special stages were probably the best ones ever. So fun playing those. They felt like a mix of 2, 3 and CD's special stages.
*The bonus stages, blue bubbles from 3&K, were OK. Felt too fast and a bit frustrating at times. It felt like I played those again and again, while finding the rings to the special stages was much harder. I would have prefered to play the special stages more.
*The game is much harder than the classic games, which is good as the old games were too easy.
*The intro and ending cinematics had the video play really, really laggy... Why? The audio was fine. I play on Steam. Any help on this would be appreciated!
*The ending(s) were underwhelming, but the intro was good. I really like that 1, 2, 3, K, M clock which practically ignored all other Sonic games (especially 4 which should never have happened).
*All in all it was a very good and fun game with lots of old and new content. I hope they make a sequel. This game felt like the real Sonic 4, too bad it just came 20 years too late.
"Why do you call the sky blue?"
Is essentially what you are asking. How can I answer a question like that? Everything is wrong with it!
The music is wrong, the graphics are wrong, the physics are wrong, the characters don't stop talking, the new villain has more edge than silver and shadow combined...
What is right with it?
Hell no, It was something which was truly a love letter to the classic 2D Sonic fans.
I don't think they added enough honestly. I was really so happy with this game overall. It was a serious breath of fresh air to a franchise that was a fucking doormat to the internet.Quote:

I can see why you're conflicted but I think you're just looking too deep into the game and not enjoying it for what it is.Quote:

@ Blades, Sonic Forces so far looks totally out of whack. I made it halfway thru that video and shut it off with that rapetastic music. They should have had Tee Lopes be commissioned to make the soundtrack for Forces. Whoever scored that is just terrible.

That is how you remix Greenhill Zone's music. Not that travesty of ear fuckery they made for Sonic Forces.
^That may be true, but that Chemical Plant Zone music on Sonic Mania felt muffled. Almost like it was coming from a Super Nintendo. It threw me off a bit; since it's my favorite Zone from all the Sonic games combined on Sonic 2.
That being said, Sonic Mania is truly fantastic. I have zero clew what others are complaining about. None of the levels are the same. They may be remixed in some, but definitely not the same. And they look and feel so awesome. Plus, there are other levels that are completely new as well. The only thing that irks me the wrong way is not giving this one a full-blown physical release; especially since it was aimed at a crowd who would be the most likely to want a physical release. Other than that, what a perfect game it is. I'm a little bit over halfway through it. Can't wait to finish it and play it all over again!
I'm looking at this, and I'm loving it. It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun to play.
Physics, really? You haven't even played it.
We've seen like 3% of the game, I think it's too early to say everything is wrong.Quote:

Looks interesting to me.
Sonic Forces looks just like Generations. I loved Generations. I also love the fact that it is going to be $39.99. Fantastic price for a game I'm definitely going to want to play anyways.
P.S.> I've been trying to express this for the longest time, but never seem to find the right words, or the right time for it. But the fact is, every single Sonic game I have ever played I have enjoyed and liked. Some have taken me a bit longer to get used to; but the end result has always been the same, I ended up enjoying the shit out of them. Spinball, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 3D Blast (especially on the Saturn), and everything 7th gen and up that I have delved into. What I'm getting at is, it's all subjective at the end of the day. I know it has been said before, but the fact remains that it's become "popular" to hate on Sonic games beyond 1,2,3, Knuckles, CD and, to an extent, Sonic Adventure 1. It's like those are the only ones that complainers just keep going back to as "the only ones that were any good". I don't know, but I have played a ton of games. And I have seen some really bad ones, and some very terrible ones. I have not yet played one single Sonic game that falls into any of those two categories. And the more Sonic games I play, the more this "hype-to-detest" just becomes clearer and clearer in my mind. I don't care what others enjoy, tbh. I care what I like and what I consider to be good gameplay myself. But, then again, the same thing has occurred with virtually every other franchise I've enjoyed. Either a small subset or a huge portion of the fanbase just doesn't quite cope with a particular game or franchise, then it becomes the "popular" thing to hate on it, and the shit hits the fan. And thus the cycle continues.
P.S.S.> People can say anything they want about the Sonic games I haven't yet played. I have no clue what they're like. But from the many that I have, I can undoubtedly attest that they have been thoroughly enjoyable experiences in my game room. And I can only hope others can find as much enjoyment as I have with whatever other franchise or game of their particular fancy. Because that's what it's all about. Fun.
