I am seeing the same stupid ass trend. Sonic CD is the least polished and ugliest of the 90s sidescrolling Sonics.
I find Sonic CD to be better than Sonic 2, which I know alot of people think is the best Sonic game. Of course you're all wrong - S3&K is superior, and the definitive classic Sonic title. ;)
Listen to this cat. Seriously, I don't understand how hipsters work.
I like Sonic CD. It's not great, it's not bad. The US soundtrack is great and the JP soundtrack is awful.
Remember the days when people would play games before talking about them. Makes you feel OLD doesn't it.
Not trusting Imagine Games Network is nothing new to me. For the Sonic games the first and second I like a tiny bit more because I can play them from start to finish in one sitting also for me anything 2D (Edit#2: But Knuckles' Chaotix, no elastic force ring bond for me thank you) is great whereas anything 3D or third person we could call it I do not like so much, the same can be said about Mario games too Edit: But I do like Sonic more than more than the Mario games.
I guess Chaotix is not underappreciated enough for them.
It's a mixed bag. Near the beginning and near the end it's quite good. The rounds in the middle can be pretty awful though (practically an entire level is conveyor belts with a curvature that doesn't even let you gain speed sanely? 90% of a level has no floor you can stand on so you spend all the time being flung in the air, so fast often you can't even see you're going? shit like that) The cartridge games are way more balanced in this sense.
Sonic CD is cool but flawed. Sonic's abilities are clunky, the level design is clunky (it has to be because of the time travel, but that doesn't excuse it), the time travel mechanic is clunky. Like Sik said the middle levels leave a lot to be desired.
And yeah I noticed the whole 'Sonic CD is the best, fuck the rest' thing and I can't understand it either. I mean, it being someone's favourite is perfectly fine. Awesome music, metal sonic, time travel, there is a lot to like. I mean the general trend, that baffles me.
Sonic CD is the worst 2D Sonic in my opinion. The level design ruins the game, especially Collision Chaos and Wacky Workbench Zones, which are just not fun to play at all. The level design doesn't contain the flow that the rest of the series has. I enjoy Chaotix more than Sonic CD to be honest.
90's 16-bit sidescrolling Sonic hierarchy should go:
Sonic 3 & Knuckles (it is awe inspiring) > Sonic 2 (the most polished of all the Sonic games, nonetheless) > Sonic CD > Sonic 1
My preference in order:
Sonic 2 > Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Sonic CD (an unrefined mess that's better than Sonic 1; but deffinitely not better than 2 or 3 or Knuckles)> Sonic 1 (seriously, nostalgia aside, this is the most boring of the Sonic games. And, hell no, there is no way you can have as much fun with a Sonic game without the spin dash. It's just wrong.)
I loved Sonic CD. It's my favorite of the 16 bit Sonic games, but that comes with the caveat that I know it's also flawed.
Sonic 3+Knuckles is objectively better in almost every way for instance. I just enjoy the hell out of playing Sonic CD.
Come to think of it, I'm just glad the trend is now Sonic CD and not Sonic 1. I'm not talking about folks like you guys (Jackal or EcclecticGroove) who simply prefer Sonic CD (I know I prefer Phantasy Star II over IV). I do seem to remember not more than a few months ago, the trend was people hyping-up Sonic 1 in terms of its fun factor vs the other ones :?. Now saying shit like "the only good Sonic game was Sonic CD"..... Naaaahh:bull:
