Anyone saying anything like that regarding a very well received multi entry series is full of shit.
I may prefer Sonic CD, but Sonic 1-3+k were all damned good and worth playing.

The guy with the glasses and the beard looks like the kind of guy who will throw vinyl records at you if you think his band sucks.
None of this is really surprising though, if any franchise has managed to somehow earn a huge backlash, shitty game after shitty game should most definitely of earnt Sonic a bad reputation and yet somehow it hasn't, somehow Sega can keep producing profitable games.
It's exciting but both ultimately quite sad (even if a little deserved) that Sonic Mania will be nowhere near as successful as it really should be, since Sega have managed to endlessly hurt Sonic, make some progress and make a decent game and then again fuck everything up, they even decided to give the coveted 4th entry in the franchise (despite it being the 15th or so game but whatever) to a game that surely they knew was basically DOA.
Had Sega have just done the right thing all along the hype for Sonic Mania could of been huge, but even with gameplay videos and Christian Whitehead's involvement people are like "ehh.... maybe", not hard to see why.
You're killing me with your "should of/could of"... ;)
Anyways, what I don't understand is why the need to belittle an entire franchise. You never hear a Sonic fan saying absurd things like that about Mario games. Even if you don't like the game, why try and substantiate or even quantify with empty accusations that the 'game' is "bad" or simply "not worth your time"? It's the same thing with the whole Nintendo Vs. Sega idiocy. You can tell it comes from complete and utter ignorance. Chances are not one of them finished a single Sonic game. You hear the same one-sided blind attitude over and over from Nintendo fanboys completely dissing anything made by Sega. I can tell you I am as Nostalgic about retro Sega as these Nintendo fanboys are about Nintendo. And, yet, I am completely welcoming of all Nintendo systems and franchises. Why? Because I love video games. These imbecile, mob-following, fad-crazed hipsters really need to find a new venue. I's obvious they get validated for their brainless opinions because they're going with what most people owned back in the day; yet equate that to More Sales = Better Product.
No, I'm not talking about your honest-to-goodness retrogamer who simply prefers Nintendo. I have no qualms about saying I am an honest -to-goodness retrogamer who simply prefers Sega. But I'm not a brainless hack who needs to justify his love or choice of games/systems by belittling their counterparts. I know many a great folk, even here at sega-16, have more love for Nintendo and they are awesome folks. Why? Because they share that love for retro gaming (or even all things gaming) all across the board. Give me a good game, and I'm going to love it. I don't care what system it came out for.
I've liked Sonic CD the best since 2003, before it was cool to. I think it's mainly the atmosphere and uniqueness that has always drawn me to it. It feels like it doesn't belong in the same series or like the team that was making it didn't communicate with each other very well. It has that disjointed, unpolished feeling. I really do like the art design and music. That's part of why I like Chaotix a lot as well. Both have problems, but that's why I enjoy them. They were like fan-made games. That being said, I'm far more inclined to play one of the MD games if I'm pressed for time and just want some quick fun. CD is for when I have a chunk of time I can set aside.
Sonic CD is admittedly the easiest to beat of all the 2D 16bit Sonics. Definitely quick to grab and go. The biggest appeal, for me, is that it's Sonic on the Sega CD. It's like that Sega CD startup screen logo finally became a game. Didn't you guys get better music in Pal regions, though?
PAL Region person who thinks the US Soundtrack is infinitely better, other than the way too serious Game Over and Boss themes when the bosses in Sonic CD are absurdly silly, the JP soundtrack sounds to me like it's composed with far less quality sounding instruments or whatever it is.
The PC version shipped in Europe with the US soundtrack for what it's worth.
Is that how it went? US Sonic CD music was the better compilation?
In just my opinion yes, I really like the US soundtrack actually, holds up as some wonderful CD quality but still Sonic sounding music, the Wacky Workbench music makes what otherwise is an annoying level all the more bearable.
Sonic 4 is a crap game either way but man did that soundtrack make it all the more worse, forgot how good Sonic soundtracks were.
The reason I ask is because I distinctly remember a thread in this forum way back in the day where the Sonic CD soundtrack variants came into question. I remember it going in favor of the Pal version (Which I think is also the same as the JP version) as the better music; and I even remember liking it better. Even now as I write this post I think I do like the JP/Pal music better as well. But it's funny, bc only recently I got to play Sonic CD, and actually didn't mind the US music at all. But, tbh, the JP/Pal music does sound more like a Sonic game. The U.S. version soundtrack is much lighter and more tropical (something like an OutRun track).
I love the Sonic CD JPN soundtrack ASIDE from the main theme of "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior", which is a nonsensical goofy song. Sonic Boom I find much better. The rest of the JPN soundtrack blows the US one out of the water.
That aside, while I think Sonic CD's level design is the worst of the series, I do not think it is a bad game by any means. To counter QuickSciFi though, I actually think Sonic 1 is the best game. Love the level design in that one without the spin dash, and the levels aren't too sprawling. I'm honestly not sure which one I'd rank the best, perhaps Sonic 1 for some nostalgic reasons. But I don't think there's a bad 2D Sonic game by any means. Anyone who says all of Sonic but Sonic CD sucks doesn't know what they're talking about. Knuckles Chaotix when it all boils down is probably the weakest of the series, but I enjoy playing it more than Sonic CD. Don't care much for Sonic & Knuckles levels either. Love Sonic 1 and 2, and Sonic 3 is excellent too.
All the 2D Sonics are worth playing. Almost none of the 3D Sonics are worth playing. I'll leave it at that. Sonic Mania looks amazing.
Even I will admit Sonic CD or 1 are not bad games, and themselves very enjoyable.
On the subject of Sonic Mania's looks, though, I will be the first to admit I was a bit thrown off (not put off, though) by its similarities in level design to Sonic CD than Sonic 1, 2, 3 or Knuckles. I can't help but be stoked about it, though.
Sonic Mania looks like the love child of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic CD and Chaotix (mostly for the art style). This really is a good time to be a 2D Sonic fan.
What?! How is this quality subtle track...
...lighter than this EDM nightmare.
Opinions aside, the real story is that when Sonic CD was set to arrive on our shores, Sega simply couldn't let a game with such a bad soundtrack through, so they ended up redoing it with Spencer Nilsen (also the mastermind behind Ecco CD, another excellent soundtrack).
I just played through KC with the good ending. It was fun, but some of the levels just felt unfinished. The time of day thing was cool too, but the rubber band was more annoying than useful. Overall, it had great potential but it just missed the mark. The style, atmosphere, and especially the music is excellent.Quote:

Also, what was up with the extremely easy final boss?
It pains me to say, but Chaotix is probably the weakest 2D Sonic, though the 32X could've hosted the best one.
I find it lighter and more tropical than the JP/Pal counterpart.
On second quote: I didn't say that ;)
