I often hear F-Zero being credited as the first "futuristic" racing game, which kind of blew my mind. Did it really take all the way to 1990 for people to think up the concept of the futuristic racing game? Needless to say, F-Zero has inspired a lot of other games, but for it to be the progenitor of the sub-genre seems strange to me. Was there nothing on the computer before hand?
