I have to ask, are you aware that most N64 FPS games offer "Left Hand Mode" controls, where the D-Pad is movement and the Analog Stick is aiming? Everything from Turok 1 (first N64 FPS released) to Perfect Dark has multiple control configurations available. Some even allow personal customization.Quote:

FPS controls on Wii: The Wii clearly was not designed for this type of game, and it shows. When all the camera motions are bound to pointing the Wiimote at the screen, then accuracy just flies right out the window. Combination-based Fighting Game Controls: This will probably come across as controversial or ignorant to many hardened fighting gamers out there, but I just don't like them. At all. Depending on when the game was made, having these control-schemes either cripples my character because I haven't figured out the moves, frustrates me because I can't pull the moves off when I want to because of the timing element, or forces me to pause every five seconds when I want to look at the move list. I much, much prefer the way the Super Smash Bros. do controls, as having all your moves bound to Direction+Button means that you already know how to perform the moves, so the only challenge there is learning how to apply them. Easy to learn, hard to master. That's good game design in my opinion.
Any game that lacks a Y-Axis inversion on an analog stick: I grew up on FPSes during the 5th and 6th generation. During that era, controlling the camera was done in the same way one controlled an airplane: pushing down goes up and vice-versa. Makes perfect sense. But then the 7th generation comes out, and all of a sudden every game during and since then has standardized the complete opposite. Why? All it took was a few popular games during the 6th generation to completely reverse what had previously been considered standard for years. Thankfully the majority of these games offer Y-axis inversion as a sort of legacy support, but when a game lacks it, it will annoy me to no end whenever I attempt to pan the camera up or down and wind up doing the opposite of what I intended to do.
I think you just need some practice to get the hang of the rhythm of the enemies and the controls. When you get the power ups "drum punch" and "crane kick," they can be used simply by hitting the A or B button without holding a direction in the D-pad. These special moves can help you out of tight jams, or if you save them, can make quick work of the end boss and his goons.Quote:

Now, there is a way to exploit the AI of the game. So if you keep two enemies on screen at all times, you can walk through the level without encountering any more enemies. To do this you just need to get to the right of the enemies without killing them and then just continue to walk right forcing the screen to scroll. The enemies will follow you. You could also just keep one enemy behind you at all times and attack a single enemy one after the next as you encounter them. Like I said, it's an exploit and it's cheap, but if you're desperate, it will work. And if you ever make it to the final level when those punks with the spears are attacking, using this trick sparingly may be your saving grace.
As far as just improving your gameplay, all you can really do is practice. Timing is everything. If you get the timing of your attack down, you'll barely be touched throughout most of the game. The enemies will drop before they even get the chance to take a swing at you. Also, keep your eyes peeled for health and power ups. These often appear after killing an enemy or in the form of a cartoon girl, Mr. Miagi or a lion(if I remember right?). You just jump or climb to them and your health will be filled.
This is all just off the top of my head, so if you have any specific questions, shoot.
A little bit. I'm simply not a fan of the 64 controller and the one analog stick when it comes to FPS games. I'm not gonna whine like QuickSciFi because I can get used to the defaults on many games. My only complaints are aiming, but overall, I'm pretty comfortable playing defaults on Goldeneye, South Park, and Quake. I haven't played too much of the first two Turoks, Quake II, and Duke Nukem 64 to say much on them.Quote:

I own the keyboard for the Dreamcast and much prefer using the controller over it. Hell, I use a controller to play FPS games on my PC. Sue me. I'm used to a controller; I don't care if K+M is the "correct way"; I ain't using it, unless I have to.
And if the game supports a controller, but it's sloppily done, sue me again - I'll bitch about it too. That is after all what this thread's topic is about, isn't it? To pass one's opinion's on crap control setups?
OT: My pet peeve is the abandonment of tank controls for "3D controls" in traditional survival horror games. I might be in the minority, but I despise 3d controls in Resident Evil 5 and on. The old games get flak for their controls nowadays, but I got used to them, and liked them alot.

Up for jump is definitely standard and efficient in fighters. I'd also never want to have to press a button to jump in a fighter. SFII already uses all 6 buttons well (3 variations of punching and kicking) so I don't think there'd be a better set-up possible. The idea of 7 buttons sounds like too much lol, the 6 only makes sense because it's an obvious pattern for punches & kicks, whereas I think 7 would probably cross the line to being cluttered and overly complicated. Plus like others said, it's nice to have the left hand devoted to all movements (inclu. jumping) while the right hand is for all action buttons. It's intuitive.
I've also played at least a couple fighters that use a button to jump (I think Street Smart and Pit Fighter IIRC) and it works ok, since they don't use so many action buttons. But it doesn't have the nice intuitive feel of SFII. A jump-button makes it feel more like a platformer or brawler.
All that said, I'm all for custom controls in fighters, so it would be nice if there was some kind of option to map jumping onto a button, if someone really wanted to. Someone using a PC emulator and gamepad could map Up onto a button, so I guess that's the solution there.
Games like flight sims with inverted controls never bothered me, I always got used to it, but yeah there should be an option for changing it.
I also can't relate to the complaints of not having Y-axis movement in 3D games, mostly because I barely play any 3D games. If I get what you guys are saying, then for example, you dislike Doom's lack of weapon / camera movement up & down. For me, it's my most-played 3D game so it's all very comfortable to me. I also like that the guns automatically aim themselves up and down. :cool:
What I actually do dislike in videogames controls include Mortal Kombat's use of a button for blocking. I never liked it, and it makes the controls feel overly complicated. 'Back' for blocking is always much easier, effective, intuitive.
Also the 6-button controller set-up for MK is stupid with 3 block buttons or whatever lol.
I don't like the Dreamcast controller very much, while I love the Saturn 3D pad. Its analog thumb-pad is comfortable and accurate for doing loops in NiGHTS etc. The DC thumbstick is relatively uncomfortable and less accurate, since my thumb always moves around a slight bit on the top of the thumbstick. IIRC the N64 has something similar so I know it was popular, but it's still so much less comfortable than the Saturn 3D pad's thumb pad. DC should have also kept the 6-button layout, and the much nicer D-pad on Saturn 3D pad. Even the plastic feels stronger on the 3D controller, while the DC controller feels cheap and breakable.
Oh and I always disliked the feel and look of SNES controllers. I know the Japanese version looks cooler but we got the ugly purple color scheme. Ironically I always loved the NES square controllers, I always found them comfortable, and more so than the SNES supposedly ergonomic controllers.
Hmm come to think of it, Dragon's Lair (Sega CD) has controls that I never figured out how to get past the first screen lol. I don't mind FMV controls on other games when I can get them to work right.
Genesis Samurai Shodown is a version I dislike since it doesn't have Haomaru's normal strong-slash, it just ruins the game for me. SCD version is awesome.
I always disliked the fatality inputs for the MK series, especially the later games that got increasingly complicated. My big complaint here is that nobody would ever figure out these fatalities just by exploring the game itself. You need to read the fatalities, memorize them, and then frantically try them at the end of each match. I just don't like that whole process. I like that fighters usually have moves that can be discovered by experimenting (like the classic fireball moves etc.) but fatalities really can't be discovered that way.
Primal Rage has pretty lame controls altogether, it was a new idea that just didn't work well.
I actually prefer MKs block button VS SF'ers back to block.
One thing I like is how there is always one person in a thousand who finds the established method unintuitive, it's usually me, but in this case I'm with the majority. I disagree with the OP, but it really does grate when all you want is to make one or two changes that would really make your experience that much better.
I know a woman who had an Atari, she's a left hander who got used to rotating the joystick 180° so she could use her left for the stick and reverse all axes in her brain. She played that way for years. When pads came along she was happier, but had to reeducate her left thumb!
It'd be nice (possible?) to have a box between the pad and console that could alter any controls you like.
