lol, look what I´ve gotten myself into. Yes, I am obviously not the biggest MegaDrive-enthusiast here. A big part for me for playing old games is nostalgia. Pure nostalgia. And a sense of fascination for videogame-history.
The other reason is the genres that almost completely ceased to exist; not only plattformers as you say, Melf, but also Run´n Guns, Shmups, Sidescroll-beat´em ups or old-fashioned top-down action-RPGs. Those kind of games I can only find on older systems but for very few exceptions. And yeah, Street Fighter II is better than DoA 4 imho. But Street Fighter Alpha 3 is better than SF II too. And really, when I can play Alpha 3, I do not play SF II anymore.
I think you have understood my point, Melf.
You can still have fun with Pole Position; I can not. I really can´t. I´ve played it when I was a kid, but I haven´t wanted to play it since I played Super Monaco GP. And I haven´t played Super Monaco GP since the times of Ridge Racer. Today if I want racing I play Gran Turismo 4. Probably until I play a better game and get used to the standard it sets. My Atari 2600 with Pole Position is cleaned every now and then, and I check if it´s functioning. But I don´t enjoy playing with it anymore.
This has not neccessarily to do with graphical aspects; it has to do with gameplay. And I do think that gameplay is always getting better and better.
Yes, people do download classics like SF II or Doom. But keep in mind that they do it for a low price. I bet they would not do it if they had to pay the price of a new game.
@ Joe about Space Harrier etc
I say the game is not worth being on MD because I think it just sucks ass. And I thought so about these games when I got my MD in 1991. Again, this has nothing to do with technical aspects. Whether I play it on C64, MD, PS2 or even Arcade; I think it´s a bad game. But the past has proven that you and I have extremely different tastes of games anyway.
I would just call you a die-hard-retro-fan. Really, buying the very same game on multiple systems is not very usual. You always seem to be the "in the old days everything was better"-type. Maybe you are just getting old and don´t want to have to do with the new stuff.
I don´t even understand where your question about Outrun and Road Rash aimed at.
@Megabomberman
Hmh...our opinions differ here. I do not think FF IV - VI were awesome but the new games suck. In fact I like every single FF-game after FF VI better... save FF XII. And even FF XII is a good game for itself; I just don´t think it is good as part of the series because it is totally different.
I still like 16-Bit-RPGs; they are a very different style from today´s RPGs. And a good story can make up for the relics I may not like in the old games. No matter if the gameplay of a new RPG is better; if I know the story, an RPG loses most of it´s fascination. Rather play an old RPG I do not know than a new one I already know.
But please, let this discussion rest. This is a retro-forum, so your reaction was to be expected. I still stand behind my opinion, as you stand behind yours. For me the Saturn was mostly"utter tosh" as Herr Schmitt would say, and I just don´t think that Powerslave is a great reason for the Saturn. Games that are good enough to make it worth are Nights, Panzer Dragoon Saga and Dragon Force imho. Unfortunately, all of those fall in the pricey category.
EDIT: I apologize if I sounded somewhat harsh in the last days. I have a friend who fell into a Koma, so my mood is not exactly the best. My opinions are true, but I did not state them very moderately. Sorry again.
Even if I am not the biggest MD-fan here, I still love the system for whatever reason, even if nostalgia does seem a little poor to you. This is my favourite forum.
Don't sell your first party memory card - you cant save games to the PAR.
Can you back stuff up from system memory to the PAR, even if you can't direct-save?
Yes.
Those first party Saturn memory carts are sup@r r@re!! You get +3000 rep just for owning one.
PS - Why do people call them memory cards? They are not cards. They are cartridges. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go play my Sonic 2 card on my Genesis. After that I will play my SNK vs Capcom SvC Chaos card on my Neo Geo. Then I will put my Sonic 2 and SvC Chaos cards right back in my wallet. I love card collecting!
The official SEGA Saturn Memory cart?
I own two of those mofo's!
One has all my other game saves backed up while the other has all my "Magic Knight Rayearth" saves on it.
Does +6000 rep points qualify me for a free Nacho Bellgrande and small drink?
This is all my fault.
I told Nick, if I got a complete Guardian Heroes, I'd sell him my disc only copy for the price I paid for it, which was $20. Well, a week ago I was looking at eBay on a whim, thinking about the game, and saw the box and manual with a BIN of $20, and bought it. So now my copy of the game is complete, and I am holding the game in my hands and I couldn't feel better. :D
Oh, so you feel GOOD about it, huh? I'll never speak to you again. :p
I've been after the box and manual for almost two years now. I think one of my first posts in the original haul thread was this and Powerslave.
Midnight on the forums bought a copy in mint condition at a video store for a few bucks.
I only know this because he used to post at a forum that me and j_factor (used to?) post at, and he's the same guy.
The US cover art for "Guardian Heroes" is god awful.
Yeah they always butcher the awesome Japanese artwork. Bust-a-move 2 is my favorite abomination. It creeps me out just looking at it.

Yes, but I only collect complete Saturn games. My mom picked it up loose, so...Quote:
