1) Quackshot

3) Strider
4) Ghost N Ghouls
all of the sonic series, el viento, revenge of shinobi, valis iii, the list goes on and on for me
Ristar
Sonic 1-3

That's it, I've had it with this screwy game. Made it all the way to Elmyra in two days, and lol, nope, nope, nope, nope. :p
But to be fair, I knew this game wouldn't click with me, because the standard hop and bop or Mario clones usually never do (cough*SNES Aladdin). I just basically played it first to get it out of the way already. Tinny Toons is officially off the backlog list... forever. Now that's cause for celebration.
Also, I'm certain this is a game Barone would love. Cheap/Blind hits and instant death everywhere. :D
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Revenge of Shinobi
Bloodlines
Devil Hunter Yohko
Rocket Knight Adventure
Quackshot
I like Strider too but the genny port is a bit too slow. Someone mentioned Rolling Thunder 2 before which is awesome but not sure if a platformer.
I actually sometimes struggle to differentiate platformers. Here's what I mean:
Favorite Traditional Platformers:
- Dynamite Headdy
- Pulseman
- Ristar
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
- Sonic the Hedgehog CD
- Sparkster
Favorite Action Platformers:
- Alisia Dragoon
- Castlevania: Bloodlines
- Ghouls 'N Ghosts
- Mega Man: The Wily Wars
- Rocket Knight Adventures
- Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Favorite RPG Platformers:
- Monster World IV
- Popful Mail CD
Favorite Run-and-Gun Platformers:
- Vectorman
Favorite Non-Conventional Platformers:
- ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron
- Knuckles' Chaotix 32X
So in my mind:
Traditional is where you rely almost entirely on only moving and jumping.
Action Platform is where you have unlimited range-attacks or projectiles at your disposal.
RPG Platform, you get it.
Run-and-Gun Platformer is tough, Vectorman is the only example I can think of for this. Something like Ranger-X just doesn't marry the two genres enough in my mind.
Non-Conventional is like platforming while free-styling (Tj&E) or with almost no rhyme, reason, or consequences (Chaotix).
^ Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Traditional platform games. But I don't care if you guys list others since I can sort them out on my own.
Haha, yeah, Run-and-Guns can certainly be a grey area. Games like Contra: Hard Corps, Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Mega Turrican, have platforming elements but I feel like a true platformer employs stages and environments that challenge you into thinking about how to progress firstly by movement and then layering that with having obstacles which detract from that progression secondly. How you go about those obstacles in my mind determines if it is traditional (jumping and having limited responses) or action (limitless long-range attacks or projectiles).
So Run-and-Gun is firstly all about shooting, and then consequently having platforming elements. Vectorman is unique in this instance because the two aspects are interchangeable, your ability in platforming and shooting must practically be complimentary in order to finish levels. You could argue the same with Mega Turrican to some degree, but Contra, Alien Soldier, Gunstar, are primarily gunners are your aptitude to do so determines your success.
Now something like Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster, I feel like RKA is closer to an action-platformer while Sparkster takes a step back and is a bit more traditional albeit the rocket ability could be an arguing point. If it had remained the same mechanic as in RKA or even similar to Pulseman, it would definitely be the later in my mind.
Contra and Gunstar Heroes are purely Run n Guns. But games like Vectorman or Mystic Defender are definitely platformers. You walk down that line, and all of the sudden you'll start calling Aladdin or The Jungle Book Run n Guns just because you can throw apples or fruits in general.
But apples in Aladdin are a limited side weapon to the primary being the sword (that and I mostly play Aladdin with the sword anyway). While in Jungle Book the standard bananas are unlimited and basically your main attack that gets just as much if not more time then jumping on enemies head.
But still, to me Jungle Book at least feels more like a standard platform game, while Vectorman feels more like a run n gun a la Mega Man. Either way, the fact that both Jungle Book and Vectorman have shooting weapon projectiles as main form of attack make them superior platform games by default in my opinion. Which in turn to me is always way better then the boring hop n bop only Mario clones.
Thief, Buster's Hidden Treasure is a Sonic type game. There aren't any cheap/blind hits. Get better at it. I've beaten it a couple of times.
Oh, so I totally imagined blindly falling on enemies and instant death spikes over and over in that waterfall stage because there was no way to tell what was waiting for me below? :p
And no, this is not a Sonic. There's a reason why it's called a Mario clone. Heck, even the overworld map tune sounds straight out of SMW.
Also, I don't need to get better at it because it has unlimited continues and have already seen all it's stages. :D
I think you're referring to the NES game, Thief. That one was a Mario Clone going after Mario 3. Give Buster speed and he plays a bit like Sonic. It kind of plays like Streets of Rage with the special power up toonster. There's no time limit. You can explore all you want and it has secrets similar to Sonic to where you can get additional carrots and extra lives. Sounds like you just sucked at the waterfall level and you tried the same strategy over and over.
Never played the NES one. And you saying give Buster some speed and he plays like Sonic to me is like saying hold the run button in a Mario game and he plays like Sonic. And you can also get extra lives via coins in Mario. You can also jump on enemies just like Mario (which is unlike Sonic's every direction ball attack). You can also traverse a map just like Mario. You can also find multiple exists to reveal new levels just like Super Mario World. And so on. Mario, Mario, Mario. Nor am I the only one who says this. Read the comments for this games review to see this, among other things.
I too happen to put Buster's Hidden Treasure in the bag of games that tried to immitate Sonic's trope-averting speedy style. If it succeeded or not it's a whole other story, but to me it clearly at least tried.
Just because it has one or two things doesn't make it a Mario clone. It's not like Mario was the only game to have secret stuff, maps, etc...
Sure, but when several things come together from Mario so clearly, can you blame me and others for saying Mario clone?
There's something seriously wrong with the jump mechanics in Mickey Mania. And I finally figured it out. Holding the jump button causes Mickey to continuously auto jump again and again. So what's wrong with this you say? Well, the longer you hold jump button the higher you jump, as per usual. Only this doesn't work so well when you're trying to reach a higher platform and you don't happen to let go of jump button in time, resulting in another short auto jump once you reach that higher platform. Which could lead to unnecessary falling off, pain or death. It's short, it's very annoying and it's this kind of info I would appreciate game reviews to cover. But nope, they all love to talk about how graphics = good level design. :?
So I'm two for two hop n bop platform games where their one job you'd think they'd have gotten right, jumping mechanics, equals fail. Ay, caramba. No wonder I'm no fan of the hop n bop genre outside of Mario brothers. ... Anyways, back to the grind...
^It's a worthy title to master. Truly one of the best Disney titles ever made, regardless of platform (no pun intended).
Well hey, is there a difference between easy and normal. Because I just found out you get an extra continue with easy, and not noticing any other differences at all.
Furthest I made it so far is the beanstalk level with the leaves in the water part. Part that annoyed me previously is that mouse chase. Had no idea what I was doing wrong. Thought once that maybe those green apples increase speeds like coins in SNES Mario Kart, but didn't notice a difference so I gave up on them again. Eventually I've had enough and looked it up. Turns out you do need those apples, lol. Main, what pain.
Alright, so I think I might have to move on from Mickey Mania. It's really wearing me out, as the slow pacing is conflicting with my urge to rush as I repeat the earlier stages. Furthest I made it was last stage, once.
But here's the funny thing, as I'm scanning the games listed here, I briefly fired Puggsy just a minute for the feels, and... what are the chances that for the first time in my life I run into not one, but two back to back games with this very weird auto jump feature a la Mickey Mania (where holding the jump button results in non-stop jumping). So now I'm curious. What other games have auto jump? And is this exclusive to Western developed games? If so, maybe we Western folk should stop drinking the fluoride tap water. :p
Puggsy is from the same developers of Mickey Mania, and yeah western platformers have some weird stuff.
