Mickey's first outing on the Master System was different than the Genesis game but just as good. Great visuals and solid gameplay make for a wonderful Disney adventure that anyone with a Master System should have in their library. Better than the MD game, worse than Land of Illusion.
I'm with Alianger. I much prefer the Master System version over the Mega Drive version. But for me, Land of Illusion reigns supreme.
My issue with this game is its length. You can easily finish it in just over an hour on your first try.
I almost gave this game a 7 out of 10 due it to it being fairly short and simple but in the end I went with the 8 because it plays well.

Wow, I'm somewhat surprised to hear others express the opinion that they too prefer the SMS Castle of Illusion to the MD version- I thought that my preference would be an incredibly uncommon one. On the other hand, I really need to give Land of Illusion another whirl, because my initial impression was that I really preferred Castle of Illusion; any particular factors that give it the edge to others?
I can't comment on which version is better as it's been so long since I've played the Genesis version or any other version of the Illusion series. Most are slow paced but fun and balanced games though.
I have played through all three (Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, and Legend of Illusion) and I'd say that all three games are worth playing. Legend of Illusion is quite short and easy, while Land of Illusion is probably the most creative with the diverging paths and backtracking, though I wouldn't say there was a huge difference between Castle of Illusion and Land of Illusion. Legend of Illusion is slightly different in that your main method of attack is throwing beans at your enemies.Quote:

They are all really fun, solid platformers that I think have gone overlooked over the years. The SEGA Disney platformers are just as good as the ones Capcom put out on the NES around the same time.
Land of Illusion has a map, special items such as the climbing rope and shrinking potion, ability to replay levels and reach places you couldn't before (using the special items), lots of well-known Disney characters, cut-scenes, an awesome final boss, and more varied levels (though shorter). For me, it's Castle of Illusion Plus.

I'm split on the 8 and 16 bit versions (Have the Game Gear version of Castle of Illusion).
I just recently started to play the Mickey Mouse games (not a fan of the character) and have been pleasantly surprised with how well these games were made. At the minimum, the animation and sprite work are always top notch.
Yeah, you definitely don't have to be a fan to enjoy them. They're solid platformers. People forget that befores Sonic came along, Sega's Mickey games were intended to be Mario killers.Quote:

Christmas is always a good season to revisit classic Disney games and, yes, I agree with those who say they prefer the SMS version. But all versions of this game, MD, SMS and GG (as well as the 2013 "remake") are amazing.
