Altered Beast isn't bad but the thing is that it's a tad slow compared to other games in that "sub-genre" (Spartan X, Vigilante, Bad Dudes, Black Belt etc), rather than being frantic action it's a slower memorizer approach, with a slow autoscroll.
As for belt-scrollers, Renegade was more important than Double Dragon and more fun too imo even if it's pretty short.
Yeah, Renegade is cool! I need to dust off the old Amiga and give the game another go.
I believe the motorcycle scene from Renegade was copied by just about half of the beat'em ups that came after it.

I wouldn't deny Renegade it's place as a cornerstone of the genre, with KFM/Spartan X being the earliest, but without Double Dragon's popularity, the genre probably never would have gotten to Final Fight(and just about everything else, including Streets of Rage).
Double Dragon really was the game that set the genre on fire. Double Dragon II: The Revenge was probably a top five (at least in NA) 3rd party title on the NES.
LLUX almost had a US release but it never happened. I remember Nintendo Power reviewing it for a potential future release, but it never materialized.Quote:

Virtua Fighter is Sega's best franchise.
Every release in the series has been, or is competitive with the best in it's genre at time of release.
If they did a VF6, it would undoubtedly rip off Tekken 7's head and shit down it's neck.

Yeah, VF series is certainly up there with the best of them.
I'm of the opinion that VF4 Evolution is probably the greatest 3D fighter (or 2.5D in ABF world) ever made. I haven't played the latest Tekken or DOAs, but I doubt anything has changed that. Even VF5 didn't measure up.
Dead or Alive sucks. 5 is pure garbage that's not worth playing, even with the VF crossover.

I wouldn't say DoA sucks, but it is a bit of a party game compared to VF and Tekken I suppose. Still a fun fighter at any rate, although like Lync I haven't played any of them past 2 (thanks for reminding me though, I was going to pick up a cheap copy of Hardcore at some point.
I find the DoA series miles ahead of any other 3D fighting game. But, to each his own, I suppose.
A broad portion of the FGC has considered DOA a joke for quite some time now. I agree, because the games are a busted, janky waste of time.
As a party game, they're not bad I guess. As a competitive fighting game? No.
