Yes. I highly recommend the Boom games on the 3DS. I'd recommend to start with Shattered Crystal. Think Sonic meets Metroidvania.
Sonic and Metroidvania sounds interesting. The exploration on the first Sonic Adventure was good but limited. Also, does Sonic: The Dark Brotherhood count? The RPG for DS? Or is it more of a spinoff?
Best series: Sonic
Worst series: Sonic
It's the oddest dichotomy. The 2D Sonic games are definitely some of the best games SEGA ever put out as a company. The 3D games are also some of the worst games they ever put out as a company.
The bigger crime is the fact is that SEGA has more IPs as a company that they simply sit on and do absolutely nothing with. Streets of Rage, Eternal Champions, Ecco the Dolphin, Comix Zone, Virtual On, Virtua Fighter, NiGHTS into Dreams, Burning Rangers, Shining Force, Panzer Dragoon, Shenmue (Until very recently, and I hate the first game with a fiery passion and I still think Shenmue 3 has plenty of potential to be a fun game similar to Sleeping Dogs), Super Monkey Ball, Billy Hatcher, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio.
I mean, what the heck? Now they just make similar spinoff trash racing games and ports of their classic games.
I am replaying Sonic Adventure (DX version, forgot I still had my nephew's old copy lying around) and I've sunk about 10+ hours already into the game in nearly a single sitting. This is definitely one of my favorite Sonics. The adventure element made the game more enduring compared to the linear format of virtually every 3D Sonic game since SA2. SA2 I am more slow to replay because I didn't like the format or how the Dark/Light sides were essentially the same but with different characters. Also, Sonic Adventure was one of the few 3D platformers I have played to death along side Super Mario 64 (which is fitting). It was the only game on Dreamcast that ever really mattered to me in that library. I am enjoying the bonus content on the DX version, and this time I am aiming to collect all the emblems and clear the newer mission mode. I'm up to about 70 emblems at the moment and have done a handful of the mission modes. Have already cleared Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and just finished Amy. Now on to Big and E-102. I like the fact that you get the entire Game Gear Sonic collection as unlockables, so getting the emblems actually matters. From what I know, the DC version gives you squat unless you had the online service back in the day. Let me add that the emulation of the GG games is slightly better on this collecton than on the Mega and Gems Compilations from earlier. Those had an icky border and also had bilinear filtering which to me made the games seem ugly. I don't mind crisp, pixelated graphics in my emulators, honestly.
Because those other games don't have the big brand recognition or easy "everyman" appeal to whore out.
I'd love to see some new entries into some of my favorite game series, but at the same time I'd also be exceedingly worried about the level of shit that would be piled onto it if the current Sega tried to make it.
I don't think I could really rate the franchises fairly anymore since Sega has changed so much since the DC era.
I'd agree that Sonic is their worst franchise now just because of the mess it's become.
Best.... I'd love to give it up to Panzer Dragoon because I loved Saga and love RPG's that are well done, but it was only a single game out of the series (the rail shooters were also very good as well). I'd also say the Shining series, but it took some odd turns later on that drag it down as well. So I'll have to go ahead and say Phantasy Star. I even loved PSO, but do wish we'd get a proper return to its roots with a real single player RPG.
My favorite Sega franchise is the series of Joe Montana football games. Not including the first one (which was a sabotaged Madden-clone programmed by EA), Sega made an innovative game with true improvements each year up through the '94 version, which remains the best 16-bit football game ever. They probably could have done just what EA did year after year but instead, they really set out to make the best game each year. It's too bad they didn't stay with this after '94.
Same goes for the NFL 2K series on Dreamcast. This was the series that made EA resort to buying an exclusive NFL license because they knew Madden was an inferior product.
I have never seen the arcade game. I don't get when people say the twin sticks are "intuitive". What's intuitive about it? I get if you come from playing it in the arcades but if you haven't, then the game pad is more than fine; it's actually great!
With that said, I love Virtual On for Saturn. I have always had some trouble with the Dreamcast game because of the controller, though. Maybe it's because I have played it so much on the Saturn but I think the control scheme is better. They can't do the Saturn control scheme on the Dreamcast controller.
And one more thing, while the solo game is fun, this game is really amazing in the versus mode. There is nothing like playing this with two Saturns linked up. I highly recommend it. Same goes for the Dreamcast game.
Although it's not the same thing as Virtual On, the Armored Core series for PSX is really good. I was really into the versus mode with two machines linked, though it's near impossible to get anyone to play it these days.
I've never seen this game before. I must get it now, thanks! I checked some YouTube videos but there are none showing versus play. Is it just for one player?
