New VS fighting snes game by ex-SNK, Unholy night : darkness hunter.
-
Love the character design.
But somehow they look kinda familiar.
Wurzel reminds me of Jon Talbain (Darkstalkers), Nightmare reminds me of B Jenet (Mark of The Wolves), and others remind me of Guilty Gears' characters.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing though, I like it.
-
looks interesting
anyone wanna give an over/under on it releasing before Project Y
-
Huh, what hardware it's running on? Because I can't find anything that does 256×184 but those screenshots seem to be the actual size judging by the pixelart. (I'm assuming it's 256×240 with some part padded out, but that still wouldn't be Neo Geo I believe)
-
It is on super famicom/ super nes hardware, on super famicom there are some games that are under 224 pixels vertically.
For example, final fight 3 :

So yes, it will be a new super game.
Judging by this flyer, we can see that buttons A, B and X are using.

It sounds like they're going for 'native' widescreen. Same way a huge chunk of the Master System software collection crops well into widescreen. The household's 50in TV even automatically crops Master System games to 16:9, simply because it detects the ludicrously huge borders and decides it's being fed widescreen video. :)
Going by my own research, myself, for an unrelated project, 184px tall should be about the right height to avoid important information being chopped off by NTSC TV's.

That would be like a 23% overscan. I don't know of any NTSC TV that was ever that bad. I think it's more to do with the SNES game needing more DMA bandwidth during vblank (aka extending vblank by cropping by turning off the display early).
-
-
I guess it's still early, but with the modest presentation, heavy tile mirroring and animation comparable to budget SNES SFII clones, it feels like it should only be an 8 meg game, instead of a montserous 32 megs. Even with expected inefficiencies from homebrew developnent.
-
1. Create fighting game for current consoles.
2. Fear it will go unnoticed in todays market.
3. create a fighting engine for snes
4. convert all the game's art/sound to snes specs
5. cram it into a 32M rom (leave out the dlc chars)
6. people love retro so this stuff markets itself
7. shit goes viral
8. sell some carts
9. six months later release your already finished high def version on all three major consoles and steam.
10. MONEEEEEEY

Pretty brilliant marketing really. They definitely managed to get eyes on them.

That would be about that much overscan, but just the right amount to allow for cropping to a clean 16:9 widescreen. :)

The background looks nice, and the presentation and stills featuring the different fighters looks good but there is something that I don't like about the sprite work. Hopefully, they'll publish a better video in the near future.
-
That's neat, but I hope they fix the rendering issues. The background scrolls in a very choppy way, and the sprites are lagging at least one frame behind the BG scroll updates.
-
I'm pretty interested, but the gameplay looks even slower than SF2:WW :(
-
Japan sure loves its spikey knights.

Not a fan of the art style, the same reason I've skipped all of the Blazblue games. At least Guilty Gear was always more original in its cast. Also, Natsume pulled off beautiful and responsive fighting game in 16Mbit (Gundam Wing) that put all the previous attempts by Capcom, Midway and Rare to shame. I wonder what could be made with that game engine in 2016.
-
I wish SNK would release a KOF game for Snes/Genesis just for teh lulz of it.

Not a good choice. Many fighters, cart space will be not enough.
I wish for Genesis Street Fighter Alpha 2 game made a proper way. Faster and smoother than SNES abomination, 320x224 resolution. I believe Genesis can do better than SF2CE and SSF2 ports that were developed for SNES primarily and then quickly translated to the Sega console. MK3 on Genesis is an example of a good port that was as smooth as arcade version and played as good, ugly color choices aside.
-
I actually like the MK3 Genesis colour choices.

They're too grainy. Whoever did the port just automatically converted original backgrounds to Genesis palette without hand picking the right and better looking colors. It kinda looks like those 90s Internet low color gif files.

I think it's based on the original arcade source code actually.

I was thinking along these lines when I saw this.

Speaking as someone who hand converted the MK3 graveyard stage to the Genesis palette I gotta say the original MK3 palette sucks, as in its extremely REALISTIC!
I found myself getting very frustrated, this area is BROWN, so I pick.. well.. Genesis palette in general is darker so I pick the closest brown. and now for the dark green
I.. fuck.. Genesis dark green is even darker, and the brighter green looks more like neon. dammit.
The Genesis shines when its colorful stuff like Sonic 2 or Ristar, but MK3? ugh no palette hack can fix that mess.

$21,546 pledged of $52,500 goal and only 4 days to go.
I don't think it's gonna make it.

The campaign has been a mess, it needs to fail hard.

Yeah, what I don't get is.. they already open pre-order via Play-Asia....

so why bother with kickstarter ?
-
The kickstarter is ONLY for the US NTSC release. They needed funds for the cartridges etc. Says it all over the kickstarter campaign and FAQ etc.

$22,857 pledged of $52,500 goal with 3 hours left to go. This isn't meeting its goal.
I'm not sure why they abandoned their own campaign so early on.

Ex-SNK Members my foot! :yuck: This game looks horrible! I was expecting that the game would have more depth! But nope! After watching the video and listening to the reviewers final assessment, I think one can hear the regret in his voice that he spent his hard earned money on this piece of turd! Another title that will sit on your shelf gathering dust! :shame:

Watching the video right now, and I'm glad that I retracted my pledge. This reminds me of 1st gen Mugen level stuff. I don't understand how it has 2x the megs of the original SF2, and yet 1/3rd of the content.
