Yeah, I got access to like 5 UFO stages without even trying. I'm sure if I played it as much as I did Sonic 2 bitd, I could speed run it with a mindset of acquiring all the emeralds.

I finally got 10 games down in 2017, so let's get my winner's log rolling :D

1. Vampire Rage (XBLIG)
Vertizontal with visuals heavily influenced by Mushihimesama Futari, plus some GigaWing'esque reflect mechanics thrown in.
Not bad, but painstakingly short.

2. XII Zeal (Xbox 360)
Known previously as XII Stag on the Playstation 2, this spiritual prequel to Trizeal has uneven difficulty but it's fun enough be it for survival or for scoring.

3. Oh Noes!! 2: Attack of the Space Burger! (XBLIG)
Crazy ass twin stick shooter with a flavor of Hollywood's old movies about a giant killer burger vs Ecco the Dolphin, Red Crab and Slayer Chicken.
Got wack?

4. Prismatic Solid (XBLIG)
At first I thought this nice and colorful game did not get any harder on higher loops, but it (fortunately) does. It's like a vertical Xexex/X-Multiply/Silpheed on polygonal steroids.
It's reasonably fun, but a little more boldness from the developers would've certainly made this a really GREAT game (I don't know if the PS4 version has any improvements).

5. Dangerous Seed (Mega Drive)
Watered down and much easier version of a tough arcade game.
The port feels rushed in its second half, it seems the developer ran out of ideas or resources.

6. Final Soldier (PC Engine)
More of the same, in fact this one seems like a rehash of Super Star Soldier with no new things added.

7. Soldier Blade (PC Engine)
The sequel gets a little better and more cohesive all around, but still... Not really remarkable in the long run.
I tried, but now I know I'm not a fan of the Soldier games.

8. Blue Wish Resurrection (PC)
Outstanding freeware shooter with amazing gameplay, inspired by Cave. I beat Original mode with the Blue Wish ship.

9. Gradius IV (Playstation 2)
After a few months of free practice I finally got the clear, using configuration type 6.
Even though it lacks the epicness of part III, I like the visual upgrades and the fact that you can recover from all checkpoints in Gradius IV.

10. S.C.A.T. (NES)
A neat little mix of Forgotten Worlds and Contra. A few more levels would've been better, but it's okay for a quick diversion.
You beat Gradius IV and two Soldier Blade games recently? Need to check that blog out pronto. I've been watching Aquas from STG Weekly stream getting back into Gradius IV too recently, made me charge up my PSP again for some Gradius action myself.
I love me some Gradius, but damn ... I'm not particularly good at any of the games. I practiced for weeks at SNES Gradius III and could only beat it on easy. I tried the arcade version on the PS2 collection and got my ass handed to me pretty quickly.
And Thief, I don't care what you say: Gradius II is hard.
Gradius III (ac) and IV are the hardest in the series without a doubt.
Oh and btw cleared Metal Slug and Tatsujin recently :) (well I played Tatsujin months ago but now I went for more loops)
54. Kung Fu Panda: Legendary Warriors - Nintendo DS

Yet another one of those C average, but very playable, games that goes unnoticed until you chance an encounter for a dollar or two at a local GameStop. Was it fun? Yes. Was it worth the dollar or two I paid for it? You better believe it! There is little info online about this game, so I'll go ahead and say this is a beat-em-up where you play, ONLY, as Po and Tigress. I believe the Wii version has 4 characters, but from the commercial, it looks to make heavy use of the motion controls. The DS version is very straight-forward. One neat feature is that it connects to the Wii version and unlocks some things that way. Suggestion: Do NOT go into this game (the DS version) thinking it is going to be a walk in the park. But once you get the hang of it, you'll want to finish it.
Here's everything I beat in 2017 for the first time:
1. The Last Guardian
As expected from Team Ico, it's both clunky and super charming. Worth it for fans.
2. Nier: Automata
I don't know if I want to do the multiple playthroughs to see everything yet (I hear part 2 is tedious but part 3 makes up for it) but the first trek through was great, and with smoother action than the first game.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
15 years ago, this is almost exactly what I wanted to see in an open world Zelda game. Tons of people said it was a horrible idea. I'm glad Nintendo went this ambitious route. It's an awesome game aside from the ridiculous amount of weapon breakage and horse controls.
4. Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap
A beautiful remake of one of the best games ever. I don't think they should have taken out the item combo that makes you invincible, though. I never use it but it's part of the original. Not that I should care about reviews but I'm a little annoyed this ranks lower than many current gen indie games in the subgenre.
5. Uncharted 4
I enjoyed this more than 1 to 3, mostly because the combat was more strategic. The more serious story also worked for me. And that city car chase was awesome since it didn't feel like it was on rails.
6. Prey
The true System Shock 3. This might be my favourite game this gen.
7. Horizon: Zero Dawn
I loved exploring this world. Taking down those dinos was satisfying.
8. The Last of Us: Left Behind
Okay but it has barely any gameplay. I'm glad I didn't pay full price.
9. Mass Effect: Andromeda
I went into this with low expectations. The characters and story are forgettable and the faces look retarded. It's a solid third-person shooter/adventure on its own, though. And it was cool having land vehicles again. I think this game's better than its reputation.
10. Rise of the Tomb Raider
It's no classic TR but it has some important improvements over TR 2013. The combat isn't super easy this time so exploring to upgrade items actually serves a purpose.
11. Sonic Mania
It's too early to rank its exact place alongside the classics but it's easily the best Sonic since the Genesis, an absolute joy. Studiopolis' music is always in my head. I never want to see Sonic 3-style bonus rounds again, though. Who the hell thought overdosing on those was a good idea?
12. Uncharted: Lost Legacy
I think this probably my favourite Uncharted game. It has the best pacing, the most strategic fights, the hardest puzzles (not that that says much), and Chloe > Nathan.
^Excellent lineup.
55. Gears of War 3 - Xbox 360

You could tell right from the start that the gameplay mechanics have been refined. It's like that in many 3rd games in a series. I've seen this in Killzone 3, Mass Effect 3, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3... and so on. It also shows how the developers wanted to perfect some things, but leave other elements out that made the previous sequel so grand (also a trend I've seen in action games overall). That is why a lot of gamers' opinions are so divided between parts 2 and 3 in gaming trilogies. This game could have been "perfect" were it not for its numerous sudden halts in gameplay flow. This wasn't as evident in part 2, which just kept you going in such a dynamic way, it kept you asking for more. Still, though, the fighting mechanics are most-definitely more polished than in part 2. And that just cements my notion that these Gears of War games have the most satisfying gun play mechanics of any shooter series ever made. And, heck, I've felt like this ever since I tried part 1 a long time ago just for a little bit. The haptic feedback is just perfection. And the choices in weapons is just on-point. Is the story cheesy? Yup. Is it still interesting? You betcha. Is the gameplay awesome? Absolutely!
And now for Judgement, Ultimate Edition of part 1 and GoW 4. The fun ensues :D.
^ While gameplay is more refined in Mass Effect 3, the difficulty is completely broken toward too easy, unless you play multiplayer. Funny how mp was the only one to receive balance changes (weekly at that too) and even extra difficulty level, while sp received none of these. Also when sp weapons came mp side, they were big time nerfed too. ie. The Venom (from DLC weapon pack) was like a rocket launcher in sp.
So yeah, saying more refined gameplay does not mean much if the difficulty is borked. But I should try the Gears of War games since they supposedly contain great third person shooter action that should satisfy a Mass Effect multiplayer as myself. I have two of them at my brothers place (not sure which ones, think 2 & 3).

56. Gears of War: Judgement

Still on point. Some minor changes in the controller scheme, but that's not unheard of in FPS franchises. I liked it as much as the rest.
And now for GoW Ultimate Edition on the Xbone! :)
I was curious about this one. It came out around the same time as God of War Ascension, and the impression I got was that it was thrown together in the same "We're-making-this-only-because-they're-making-us" fashion.
What's the story, if you don't mind me asking? It's a prequel starring Baird, right?
Prequel of part 1 with Baird, but u also control Cole and a new female cadet. Also, the game is not "over" until you finish the single act campaign "Aftermath" (an extra Act for GoW 3 starring Baird and his crew). That's when the credits roll.
57. Gears of War - Ultimate Edition - Xbox One

I was worried at first I wast just going to replay a port with a "remastered" stamp on it, but this one truly got the Halo CE Aniversary Edition overhaul. It looks so good, it may even be better looking now than 2, 3 and Judgement. After 4 games in the series, this one was a breeze. 'Loved it even more this time around. Truly the Ultimate edition.
And now for GoW4. Which reminds me, I don't own it yet. Gotta get to it then. :)
8. Fatal Labyrinth - Genesis
This has been one of those games that I would just randomly pick up and play from time to time, and last night I ended up beating it for the first time. It is actually a game I have enjoyed since the day I found it, but at the same time, it's really easy to get burned out on it (especially with all of the confusion and curses that take away all of your food). I'm a fan of the randomization (although the types of floors are very limited), but my favorite aspect is how the music changes every 10 floors.

Gameplay is perfection. Graphics are super colorful and beautiful. Story continues to feel very dynamic. And character development has finally progressed. I loved this new take, for any Saga, in fact.
@MrMatthews, more than ever, I can see your Lord of the Rings Reference here. Also The Hobbit. Movies-wise. I've also seen a lot of inspiration throughout the whole series gathered from major SciFi films of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. You have Aliens, Soldier, Pitch Black, Starship Troopers. I love it. :)
