96:54 Hours with Old Hunters DLC & optional Chalice Dungeons
That pictured area is my fave in the game, The Forbidden woods. Oozing with atmosphere that's greatly enhanced with some mj, of which was used for most of the playthrough for much better immersion and flip side of the coin experience.
About the DLC, well, it's broken into 3 Acts. At first I though ok, then act 2 was like now this is more like it, and by act 3 I was blown away to see a fave theme of mine revisited; The Valley of Defilement from Demon's Souls. A theme constant throughout the series and a fave of mine (yes this means Blighttown, the most hated place in DS1, is my fave place too). Really great surprise finish to a great DLC very worth the $20 admission. Only wish I knew I could walk on water for the final boss before I beat him, lol. As would have much preferred the complete open area instead of the jankyness of getting caught into background objects.
The Chalice dungeons were also a first for me this time through, only did like one of two before and there are a total of 26 with 3 to sometimes 4 acts (though these dungeons can be randomized in layout/enemies/traps/items/handicaps too). Only after awhile I skipped past the root dungeon variants as they had some randomized elements that made the experience too detached from other players, so then switched focus to the fixed shared dungeons only all the way to the final three Depth 5 locations. And let me tell you, these copy paste like dungeons were a massive highlight of this playthrough, especially with mj and how they were a new experience. Very reminiscent of my fave dungeon crawler Shining in the Darkness too, only with Dark Souls gameplay. Really makes me wish they brought these back for Dark Souls 3.
Yeah, I know how that goes. A while back, I was looking through my games and realized that I had played a good amount of them but beaten few, so I decided to start actually beating them. I picked up where I left off on some (Fossil Fighters: Champions was one), got rid of some (FFXII, no one wants you), and restarted others (StarTropics, most recently). Glad I could help reignite the spark on this one! It's kind of ridiculous, but I think that just adds to the charm.
Beating Abadox is basically 1cc or nothing. I've yet to achieve it though. But because you lose all of your power ups when you die, once you're deep into the game, you're totally screwed if you die because your peashooter is useless, and avoiding death while repowering up is a daunting task.
Regarding the LJN Defender, I recommended his videos about LJN games because they actually cover the ins and outs of the games unlike most of the YouTube videos out there which just rip them. I'm not a regular viewer of his channel or anything, I just found his approach to those games refreshing as the popular internet opinion of anything LJN is that it automatically sucks. I happen to like Karate Kid and Jaws quite a bit, and don't understand the hate.
First stage killed me the most in Life Force too, MrMatthews. Ditto for NES Gradius II. But since it's the first stage, resetting abuse for practice is not a problem.
The fire stage in Life Force, not the first stage.
Jeez, I’m not that terrible ;)
64. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - PS4
https://i.imgur.com/lMBgNQU.jpg?1
I forgot that The Old Blood was a prequel to The New Order. The intro of The New Colossus makes a good recap, but it's not the whole story and you really have to have played The New Order before this one (not so much The Old Blood; although I highly recommend it). I remembered immediately after picking-up the controller why I love this game so much: GAMEPLAY + STORY. It's just pure Nazi killing mayhem and it is awesome. Love the Sci Fi. Love the gameplay. Love the gore. Love the story.

Quick and simple. Very self-intuitive. Not exactly at the level of Super Mario Odyssey, but an excellent platformer all of its own. I'm glad it got a physical release.

Not much different than its Wii U counterpart. Still just as much fun. Except here, I beat it purely in handheld form. It was far too convenient to do otherwise. Every moment I had to spare, I kept at it. And, yep, I did it in a day ;). It's that kind of addicting fun I just love. It's right up there with Forza 6, Tokyo X-Treme Racer and Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed as one of my favorite racing games of of time (I guess, including the Wii U version too). I'm too tired now to look it up, but I think there is at least one track I don't remember from the Wii U counterpart and the fact that there are two power-up options available in this one. Excellent as the Wii U version. Keep'em coming :ok:
Dark Souls (Steam)
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....AC_SL1500_.jpg
91:02 hours, 2 loops, though didn't complete optional DLC area in second loop
Usually don't play loop 2 of Dark Souls due to fewer players online. A workaround for this I realized is to level cap at 66, this way you still have access to end game players of loop 1, which is basically second half of the game. (How I know this? There a connectivity mod that allows me to view players in the areas I'm in and the levels they're at)
Never really got into DS1 PVP, tried this time but man, backstabs or lagstabs in this game are so OP. One minute the dude is in front of you, the next he's stabbing you in the back (next code isn't as well done for DS1 and it's P2P instead of server based like the others). The 2nd and most important thing, not enough players, so sad to have missed this game in it's prime. And why it's important to play the these games as early as possible. In the meantime, here's hoping for a remaster edition to get everyone playing again at once.
Last I played the PS3 version, and man, what a difference 1080p, hi-res textures and 60fps make. Only thing holding it back is Steams nonsense way of not allowing msgs to be send to players not on your friend list.
Abodox! (emulated on my trusty PSP)
http://sydlexia.com/imagesandstuff/1...dox_tongue.gif
Did a run for this yesterday, only made it to second stage and shut it off. But today I credit feed through the whole thing, most of my time was spent on that last stage it felt. After beating the very easy speed section after final boss, I was all like "Not sure I want to 1cc this game for MrMatthews, there's just not enough too love." But while daydreaming I accidentally press start again, then go "Maybe there's a loop 2?" And I continue to proceed all the way to the end of the game without dying once, I kid you not (think shield accumulates because I've made quite a few mistakes during second half of last stage). After beating that final boss I was all like "Yes! Who the man!" lol, but forgot about the easy peasy speed section, and though easy, was quite nervous because I celebrated early and still wanted them bragging rights. :p Lcuky all went well, this ain't no Gradius speed up section, that's for sure.
So, MrMatthews, will you be repping me now or later?
Anywho, some brief thoughts on this game. I don't think it's that good. LifeForce on the NES, that this game is very clearly inspired by, is still quite a bit better in my eyes (even if I weren't Konami shooters & Gradius series bias). Plus LifeForce NES game loops a few times to more acceptable difficulty levels, not to mention replay value. This game feels much like by the numbers algorithm that worked out well enough because it was developed by Japanese devs and Japanese devs seem to do very little wrong.
lol, not 1942, anything but 1942. Have it in my shmup rom folder under "Bad Vertical>Micronics (4)" with Exed Exes, Tiger -Heli, and Twin Cobra.
But you should really re-attempt a 1cc or no miss Abodox run, all the practice you need will be a solid credit feeding first run from beginning to end (I personally took a few breaks during that run with stuff like making a tea, feeding cat, even washing some dishes at one point, lol). Of which you will find only the last stage is really hard to learn the in and outs of recovering without powerups (but by then you'll be really into the game and having some fun learning how to recover via trial and error). Once you beat the game that way you will feel unstoppable because playing with powerups, namely once you've acquired the very OP homing missiles, is just a matter of chilling back and navigating through familiar enough levels.
Also, save for 1 or 2 mid bosses and the final 2 bosses, all bosses have a very obvious safe spot to spot on you very first run through them. Basically all their bullets cover particular spots of the screen showing you a clear spot to safely avoid all shots while still getting shots in. For second last boss his side pods that shoot very annoying homing shots can be taken out first and may be a good idea to do so. Final boss just point blank one of his two eyes and once the homing ghosts get near, back away so they now in front of you to be blasted too, to another round of point blanking the eyes and he should be dead. (Point blanking means getting right up close so that you can spam your shots without having to wait for them to go off screen or hit something before you can shot another volley of projectiles)
Actually, I’m changing my mind, I’m funny like that.
I’m going to throw the gauntlet down and challenge you to Gradius V.
Gradius V. The Gradius I'm least familiar with... actually have it for PS2 with R-Type Final, but left all my stuff with my brother and the fat PS3 with PS2 hardware in it. Can still emulate in ePSXe2, but not emulating anything on PC until my new Hori Dual Shock 4 arrives, which should be before Christmas. Hoping the D-Pad on it is ace.
I’m assuming you emulated the arcade version of AbAdox? Do you still restart at the beginning of the level when you die?
Oh, I spelled it wrong. There's no Arcade from what I'm away, using terms like credit feeding is just lingo for continuing (and no miss means no death).
No reset on stage 1 (and yes, died on stage 1), just continued all the way through and basically learned how to recover most checkpoints with starting peashooter. Why it was so easy on second playthrough to breeze through it and hang on to max firepower from beginning to end. Was really surprised by how easy this no death run happened, because I wasn't quite feeling the urge to 1cc it at that moment. Just accidentally pressed start again after game ending and it just happened. Why I'm saying you should give it a try too.
Mighty Final Fight (NES)
http://images.nintendolife.com/scree...2993/large.jpg
First started messing around with all three characters, came to conclusion Cody and Guy would be easiest for first attempt, before finally settling on Guy. Was just going to beat via continues and be done with it, but the more I played the more the game grew on me, that and my first finish was a 1cc with two lives to spare anyway (this only happened because I didn't continue much during practice runs). Afterwards was all like "What the heck, lets try it with Cody." First attempt got botched, second was a success. So what next? Haggar, why not. To my surprise first attempt was successful, very fun and quite different way of playing the game (Haggar is missing the down+attack move for easy combo/grab setup that the other two have, but instead actually has a useful and fun special move to make up for it and leads into a grab. Though for his grabs I would mostly knock enemies down with a jump attack and wait for them to wake up into a grab).
Thoughts? At first thought it was pretty "meh." Then during the process of learning the game more and more made it's status rise to "solid." http://storage.proboards.com/6576594...Qo0jvmiVYH.png Checked out some brief 5 min YT vids in between sessions and was shocked not one person discussed this game's score system for it's EXP level ups. It's some much welcomed added depth to this game similar to TMNTIII for NES in that your killing blow dictates the EXP gain;
You gain a new move at level 4, something everyone mentions, but nobody mentions you also do more dmg and gain more HP with each level up. Overall found it quite addicting trying to level up as fast as possible by finishing each kill with the higher EXP attacks, on top of crowd control & survival. Meaning I think it's important to this game's fun factor and everyone who reviews this game without mentioned it only makes them sound like they don't know what they're talking about (aka, reviewer credibility fail).Quote:
Guy's Points

Graphically this is one of the most impressive looking NES games and that third stage tune really hits the spot (supposedly music was done by Mega Man 6 team, only I'm much happier with this game's soundtrack).
Batman Returns (NES)
http://www.gamesstationretro.com/ima...3770719-00.gif
Well, here's my first Christmas game, started on January 1 too coincidentally. Was not planning on 1cc'ing this one, but in the end wasn't satisfied with just credit feeding.
Alright, this game has a strange continue system that makes it annoying to credit feed practice. Basically you don't re-spawn at the start of a stage with full health, and only with each consecutive death/re-spawn do you start with more and more health until finally starting at full health. But at the beginning of the game you only have one health bar, with a chance of getting as many as 4 health bars by the end. So what I figured out is that the game keeps track of your deaths from the start of the game, so what I did was just kill myself at the start of stage 1 at least 10x and make a state save (or password) of that for all future practice playthroughs so that when I continued at any point in the game, it would be at max health. Unfortunately I 1cc'ed the game with that file, which prevented the good ending since the are 4 ending based on how many times you've continued. Was going for the good ending afterwards, but after two failed attempts (both at duck boss) I'm throwing the towel in. Partly because this game requires some really tight gameplay that unfortunately & frustratingly the PSP face buttons and D-Pad are not up to the task. Will revisit this on PC with a proper controller later.
Checked out the GameFAQ guide after and it could really use an update with it's poor tips on bosses, stages and missing secrets, like; an extra heart pickup just before the duo boss room of stage 3, where you kick the top of the background chimney; how the extra health box pickups work (need to have health on last box in order for a box drop to appear instead of a heart), and; that you can pick up one final health box just before the final boss too - if you have enough health by that point (only managed this once).
Thoughts on it? It's a solid & challenging game, but had more fun with the easier Mighty Final Fight. I did like how the very many attempts at it reminded me of the very many attempts at TMNTIII for NES back in 1992/3. My biggest issue with this game is the down+attack button for the slide, big mistake for a game requiring Y-axis movement. If only someone could create a hack to fix this issue.
67. Ghost Blade HD - PS4
https://i.imgur.com/2htezj5.jpg?1
'Got a $10 gift code from Sony this Holiday season ('don't know why, but awesome), and 'decided to grab the best game I could find for that price on PSN. I already owned a copy of this one for the Dreamcast, but I thought, why not give some trophies a try. This game is fantastic. Shmups truly are the ultimate casual 15 minute break genre. Quick to grab and straight to the fun. Great job Tulio and team.
26. Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero (WiiU):
I can’t think of many other games with as much charisma as this one, let alone coupled with such snappy, endearing gameplay and absolutely gorgeous art design and animation ... and Jake Kaufman’s music is fantastic.
Bravo.
No-missed the first loop of MD Same! Same! Same! and went on to round 16 (2-4) before finally being shot down and wasting a bunch of lives trying to recover. Once I got back on an even keel I cleared two more levels then suffered another miss, which this time meant a whole string of subsequent deaths until my lifestock was depleted to naught.
The game develops some teeth in the second loop, you can't sleepwalk through it like the first.
PS it will be a very long time before I clear Kuukyoku Tiger. Nasty game. Love it though!
68. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - PS4
https://i.imgur.com/3WJy4au.jpg?1
Fun as always. Beautiful graphics. Gameplay mechanics remain intact. My only gripe with this game is the story. I won't go too much in detail with this, because I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Something hugely important gets traded-in for something very stupid...:roll:Let's just say some villains just aren't very good at finances. And by "villains" I mean "plot developers".
Still a ton of fun and a welcome addition to my Uncharted collection. :ok:
But is it better then Disney's Star Wars stories, QuickSciFi. PS. Congrats.
69. Assassin's Creed: Origins - PS4
https://i.imgur.com/mThFO2h.jpg?1
Great game. I can't say I've been disappointed by any of the main series games. The naval warfare is dumbed-down here a bit, but not every Assassin's Creed title has to be Black Flag. I loved the graphics. The fighting mechanics were spot on. I mainly play these for the exploration. I also like it when they clearly define the bad guys from the start. Gives you the motivation to start up a brawl every time you run passed them. I would go into every fort and just take the lot of them on. Fun times :D. I can't wait to see more of this. I hope it gets the Ezio trilogy treatment.
Get ready for a text bomb. This list will be spotty for details, but...
9) Momodora II (PC)- Not a bad little freebie platformer/action game. Simple graphics, but some fun boss fights.
10) Castle Werewolf 3D (PC)- Yeah. This uh... this wasn't a good FPS. It tries to mimic Wolfenstein 3D visually, but the levels are too basic, the game's too easy and the animations are rough.
11) Momodora III (PC)- Bigger and better than the first two games.
12) Iron Impact (PC)- A simple tank game that plays like something from the NES days, but with more modern graphics. Not a bad little time killer.
13) Heli Heroes (PC)- A very rough "Strike"-like game that's oddly easy. Lots of stuff going on, but powerups and health are all over the place. Feels like a budget title (which it is).
14) Kirby's Dreamland (GB)- Yep, I finally sat down and beat this easy little game. Fun, but easy.
15) Kirby's Dreamland 2 (GB)- Beat this one as well. Took a while longer as the game's a bit tougher and bigger, but it was still fun.
16) Cube Runner (PC)- This game was oddly fun but frustrating. It's a 3D puzzle game where you have to get a cube across obstacles while flipping the screen 180º on the z-axis. It starts simple, but some of the later puzzles will result in some hair loss due to pulling it out.
17) Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo (PC)- Retro-styled shmup that got an update with new content. Very nicely done game.
18) Redux: Dark Matters (PC)- Sat down and played through this again. Not a bad shmup that started on the Dreamcast.
19) Assault Suit Leynos (PC)- Played the remake of this game. Not a bad remake either, though it was a bit easier than the original Genesis game and it did have some glitches that will most likely never be fixed.
20) Rex Rocket (PC)- This wasn't a bad little retro platformer. Early SNES visuals, decent music and little touches of some metroidvania exploration.
21) M.A.C.E. (PC)- Simple shmup. Drawn out shmup. Boring shmup.
22) 8-bit Commando (PC)- It wanted to be Contra, but it wasn't. That game wasn't horrid and broken, but there are some choices that made it more of a chore to play (very few powerups, iffy controls, etc.) It's basically the dollar-store version of Contra.
23) Dark Souls 3 (PC)- Love this game. It's not as brutal as the first game, but it's no cakewalk either. The visuals, the music, the gameplay, the boss fights... good stuff.
24) Dark Souls (PC)- Yep, played through it again. You have to get used to the 30fps and the way dodging works again, but it's still enjoyable... and tough.
25) Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin (PC)- I wanted to see how different this game was with the changes they made over the original game and its DLCs. Didn't really make it tougher or easier, just different. Still a fun and challenging game though.
26) Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo (PC)- Nice little shmup with a retro flare.
27) Dark Souls 3 (PC)- Shut up. I was in the mood and wanted to see a different ending.
28) Strider (PC)- I FINALLY sat down and beat this game. Not quite as good as the original game, but about on par with the first arcade sequel. Kind of drawn out at times, but a decent arcadey game.
29) The Legend of Dark Witch (PC)- A cutesy platformer that was fun to play. Nothing new brought to the table, but it was done well visually, musically and gameplay-wise.
30) Jet Gunner (PC)- Odd graphics in terms of color, but not a bad NES-styled action/platformer.
31) Alwa's Awakening (PC)- A metroidvania game done with early SNES graphics and NES sound. Uses an interesting colored-powers idea to help solve puzzles and get through sections. Fun little game.
32) Sky Mercenaries (PC)- A decent shmup with some resource management thrown in. The visuals are alright and so is the music, but if you're not a fan of Euroshmups, you won't like it. The game really feels like a choatic euroshmup and plays like one. I never really had an issue with Euroshmups, so I beat it.
33) Pac Man Championship Edition 2 (PC)- This game captured my attention more than I thought it would. The challenges were tough later on, but the game as a whole was fun.
34) DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon (PC)- Handdrawn (as in with pencil and crayons) graphics and a silly story made this game worth trying.
35) Midnight (PC)- A simple puzzle game with some Limbo-styled graphics.
36) Moonchild (PC)- An RPG Maker game. Not a bad try, really, but some of the dungeons were a bit too obscure in terms of how the hell you're supposed to find what you need to do. Got drawn out by the end.
37) Overdriven: Reloaded (PC)- Bullet hell shmup with a Flash-like visuals. Not a bad game at all, but not groundbreaking either.
38) Xeodrifter (PC)- Metroidvania, NES music, cartoony retro graphical style, pretty solid gameplay.
39) Shantae: Half-Genie Hero (PC)- It's a Shantae game, so you know it'll be good. The visuals, music and such were great. My only complaint is that it was oddly easy and a bit short.
40) Mini Ghost (PC)- Very retro metroidvania game with simple graphics (early-NES days) and Master System-like music, but it was a fun little game.
41) Doom 3: BFG Edition (PC)- Played it, beat it. I still like how the darkness was used in this game.
42) Doom 3: BFG Edition RoE (PC)- Ditto.
43) Doom 3: BFG Edition TLM (PC)- Finally played through this added mission set. Not bad, but not as good as the base game or the RoE expansion.
44) TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan (GB)- I've owned this game for years and finally sat down to beat it. Simple, but not bad.
45) Homefront (PC)- This was a fun FPS, but holy shit did the ending just suddenly arrive. Definitely felt short, but what was there was good.
46) Borderlands: GotY (PC)- Played through this again, but with the GotY edition. Still a good game.
47) Homefront: The Revolution (PC)- Much bigger than the original game, and you can tell the makers of the Dead Island series was involved. It almost plays like an offshoot now with all the things you do mission-wise. Even so, it was fun FPS that felt more fleshed out than the first game.
48) Mortal Kombat (9) (PC)- After years of owning it and playing the arcade mode, I sat down and beat the story mode. Not a bad game and story, really.
49) The Incredilbe Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut (PC)- Another game I've owned for years, and finally beat. It's all three games combined into a big story, but man does it overstay its welcome. By the time you get to where the third game starts, you've pretty much had your fill of it. Nice visuals, music and such, but it's just drawn out.
50) Peggle (PC)- You bounce a ball and try to hit all of the orange pegs before you run out of balls. Kind of short, but a good time waster.
51) Peggle Nights (PC)- Ditto.
52) Torchlight II (PC)- Just felt like playing through this again, so I did.
53) Deadspace (PC)- A game for Halloween. Despite the issues with the mouse and such, this is still a great game visually, atmospherically and gameplay-wise.
54) Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (PC)- More Nazi-killing fun. Besides the "you've got to be kidding me" plot turn, the gameplay is much the same, the visuals are good, and this time, the story is more fleshed out.
55) Tomb Raider (PC)- Played through the reboot game again. Still a fun game.
56) Rise of the Tomb Raider (PC)- Decided to tackle this one as well. Not quite as good as the first one, but it's still a solid and enjoyable game.
57) Max Payne 3 (PC)- I've tried playing this game several time, but I finally pushed through it. I felt like half the game was waiting for the cinemas to end. Sure, the visuals and such a good, but there was a bit too much cutting into the gameplay to listen to narrative.
58) Hatred (PC)- Yes, it's a game all about "shock the people." You're a nut killing as many people as you can. The controls are a bit off, there are some glitches and all of that, but I got it cheap from Groupees. Not bad, not good, just... meh.
59) Crysis (PC)- I've heard about this game a lot and do gave it a whirl. I figured I could run it now. A solid FPS that was tough but fun... up until the zero gravity section. Then it took a bit of a turn for the worse to me. The battles got drawn out more in tedious ways (flying enemies that get hit once and then shoot off in another direction) and by the time you reached the end, you were happy to see it done. Still visually nice looking and the story was alright, though.
60) Crysis: Warhead (PC)- Much the same, but with oddly long, slow and uninteresting cinemas. It takes place with Psycho, who went unaccounted for for a bit in the first game.
61) Might & Magic Heroes 1 (PC)- Oldschool gaming, baby. I loved the King's Bounty games that came out in the 2000s, and decided to step back and play the first offshoot of the original KB. Takes some getting used to and I know for a fact the computer cheats at times (some enemies had way more health than they should have), but it was a fun old DOS game.
62) Crysis 2 (PC)- In ways, better than the first one. It takes place after the events of the first game and continues the story. The visuals are much better, the gameplay was more "traditional FPS" (no zero gravity) but better focused and overall, it was more enjoyable to me.
63) Ghost Blade HD (PC)- I play tested this shmup (and the original on Dreamcast). Nice visuals and two good OSTs, but this version is better than the DC one. The gameplay's been tweaked to make it more challenging and more fun, with quite a few touch ups to things like bullet patterns and such. This one feels more like the game the DC version was trying to be.
as usual, late to the party
better late than never though

11. In the Hunt (Saturn)
This game has some differences when compared with the arcade version, including a few shady bits in the scoring system. Still fun though.

17. Terraforming (PC Engine CD)
Strange little horizontal shooter whose content doesn't match its title.
