Hi all,

As I can create a Thread, here is this project that I talked about on another topic, Papi commando.

As you may know, I'm an independent developer, who has a full-time job.
Maybe you enjoy (or not !! :p ) to my previous productions (Papi commando WM and Bomb on Basic City SD)

After finishing my last game, Bomb On Basic City, I wanted to change style ...
I've always liked sports games on console, especially tennis games! So, I figured, why not on Megadrive ! :D

In homebrew, sports games are rather rare or even inextent!

Started 6 months ago, I realized a first demo that I then shared.

In this regard, a playable demo has been widely distributed on the WEB!
You can train against a Training Robot or play against a player controlled by an AI, "The Doc"!

Graphically, we were very close to my old productions ...
I wanted to change completely style, for a more realistic rendering and above all, change DevKit.

So I turned to SgdK, fabulous devkit that allows more possibilities than Bex. Much more complete!

(As a reminder, SgdK allows to program in C, BEX in Basic.)

From then on, I really exploited the graphics capabilities of the console thanks to the internal tools of SgdK!
This was the beginning of a new adventure !

New animations, a very detailed tennis court, a lively audience, etc ...

What I want to do is a mix between Simulation and arcade!
As I work alone to do everything (Code, Artwork, sound, music) I do with my technical level and above all, realism for not doing anything.

I can't use the prestigious tournament name like Roland Garros, or use the known player name ... So I'll use the world I created before, Basic City, C ++, Javascribouilles and new unreleased characters To include them in the project!
I will try to create 10-20 original players as well as a prestigious tournament, the Basic City Tournament!
As well as other small tournaments.
Also, a 2-player mode will be provided.
Also the ability to have players with their own characteristics (Power, endurance, speed, ...) and be able to improve their player with experience.


I will not use the support of the Kickstarer ... Because I do not have the use!
As I take care of myself and the tools I use are free, no interest.
And then I do not like this support there even though it understands its usefulness for many independent developers or studio.

I like your pixel art a lot, the colors seem to fit well, the game soundtrack need more work, because it's a tennis game, and the focus is not necessarily on the music, i do not see problems using PCM for the intro, or for the other game situations.

In fact, I remember some people complaining about you use PCM for Papi Commando BGMs, which I really do not understand, because they are good tracks!

The most important of all is that the game has a really fun gameplay.

Yes indeed, for the first demo, I used PCM (this is one of the tracks of Papi Commando besides!)
The last one is FM, and I will stay on that choice. For me, music and sounds are important, because I am also a musician.
For Papi Commando, even if all the musics were in PCM, I had taken the greatest care when carrying in 14Khz - 8 Bits to have the least loss possible. I think I have made my bet!
( For BOBC, all musics are FM ! )

I take great care for everything that is graphics, especially for this project ... This will set the tone for my next projects!
And of course, the most important will be the grip and the gameplay that are for me, the most important in a video game ... Even more than the graphics! It's no use having a nice game but boring and bad gameplay (Shadow of the Beast for example ... Among other things!)

I just improved the physical engine of the tennis ball.
What's up ?
- Gestion of the Zorder.
- The ball rolls slowly after the last bounce.

All in all, small details that add a little more realism ! :cool:

Hey all,

I reconfigured the structure of my physical engine in order to be able to play on various parameters in order to model the usual shots of Tennis.
The settings are really fine ... :)

On the video, we can see a realistic Lob which I am quite happy.
There is also the presence of the public in both side !! :D
I also added the sounds of ball and racket.

Here are the latest advances:
- Improved main sprite with better decomposition of typing animations.
- Added Lift / Slice animation.
- Added the Normal shot in addition to the Lob.
- Adjustment of Ball physics.
- Various optimization.

Looks great so far. The only bad thing I can say is the swing animation, I find it somehow lacking, because this is an important animation it should looks as a better and powerful feedback of hitting the ball.

Hi all,

For tonight, I managed to model a few shots of the Tennis:
- Normal Lifted.
- Slice shot.
- Drop shoot.
- Lob.

What is really great !! Something I had not been able to do before ...
I still have to set everything up well during the game, but the basics are there.
All with only 2 Buttons (A / B) and specific PAD positions, not complicated, type UP / DOWN.

I can of course consider the type of surface, the player's lift skills, power, speed, etc. A crazy thing. Finally, not that much, it is not new eh ... But for me, it is the total discovery in feeling mode without taking information on the net, aside, long videos of real match and (Super Tennis SNES, Final Match Tennis, Greats Courts 2, etc ...)

But it really a huge work ...

I'm really enjoying these videos; it's great to see each step of your progress and I do appreciate the kind of hard work you'r doing here. Like you said, there's something special about implementing the physics mostly from scratch and fine tuning it as the development continues.

- Gestion of tennis shots {Slice, Lift, Amortie, Lob}.
- Variable length control in Lift mode {Short, Normal, Long}
- Gestion of the Net.
- Gestion of the ball pickers when the ball is in {Foul net}.
- Improved Animation Player 1P.

one tiny bit from me : )

the ball boy should stay at the closest side from where the ball was picked up, in this particular case for example he should've stayed on the right side of the court. It's just a small detail though, not a mandatory thing.

Great job so far, can't wait to get my hands on this one ^^

Hi all,

Tonight, I totally recast the main code of the game.
I have fully integrated future {Normal / Tournament / Training} game modes as well as the {Public ON / OFF - Referees ON / OFF, etc ...}
This makes it easier for the settings ! :)
