CronosMaxPlus - not worth the headache

Just arrived and is a piece of not working junk on arrival. Observe this video (just the opening pic as you see it is enough).

Well my 4 way USB dongle is some junk amazon one instead of the one in the video, as it doesn't work my X-Box 360 wired or wireless controllers. It works when I don't use that dongle and plug it directly in the CronosMaxPlus, but I need the 4 way split so I can plug a Dual Shock 4 too in, otherwise the junk PS4 does a check and kicks me off after 10 min for not using their junk Sony controllers.

I don't get it, the 4 way USB split does normally work because it does so when I plug the Cronos through it. So now I'm to search for some other junk USB splitter and hope it works? Giving me bad flashbacks of searching for WiiU Ethernet>USB connector and after buying and returning 4 different kinds back, I finally gave up on the WiiU entirely instead. Console gaming is supposed to be simple pug in and play, I miss those days.

You need to properly setup the Cronus from a PC using it's own software manager. Look in the supplied manual you got with the box, or download it from their site.

I wouldn't call it "junk". It's more of a "Jack of all trades".

That's funny because Cronus Max Plus sounds like an over the counter headache pill.

Alright, another day. With fresh mindset and patience required for troubleshooting BS. That and I haven't started my gaming yet only to have it constantly interrupted by troubleshooting issues. Or my white wine buzz getting interrupted.

Got it all figured out finally. Read previously that the MaxPro revision is supposed to come with latest firmware for USB hub. Turns out it wasn't the case (thanks, The Jackal). So I had to look up how to do that (ie; this video);

Well one difference that's noticeable right away after adjusting my aiming and sniping with Dual Shock 4 in Andromeda these past two weeks or so since it's release. Is that when switching to X-Box 360 controller the first thing I noticed is more control over analog increments. So basically it feels less like it's going from 1>3>5>7>etc and more like 1>2>3>4>etc (exaggeration, of course). This is especially noticeable with dead zone issues on top of things too. As now not only do you have a dead zone to crossover when fine tuning back and forth for that headshot, but lacking more in between precision movements adds to more overshooting your aiming mark forcing you back to step one; more dead zone crossings. Then add in that I prefer to set for max sensitivity in game options for aiming speeds, and it only adds to highlight the issue further still.

The DS4 sticks also have more stiffer resistance too, so it feels more like a workout. Bigger difference then I remember. I prefer more resistance then the very little resistance of the DS3 (and why the X-Bone sticks have me worried from testing in store without gameplay), only now I'm finding the resistance too much on DS4 (especially in combination with what I talked about in first paragraph). In short, the resistance of the 360 sticks feel just right to me.




Anyway, my next step is to bypass entirely on getting an X-Bone controller and moving on right to the meat - The Elite controller. Real curious about that thing. Especially after this video;

Dead zone reduction being the main selling point. Only I won't have that X-Bone app for sensitivity curve if needed, so here's hoping Cronus X-Aim Pluggin can help me with that (haven't tried it yet, so not sure if it can help with sensitivity curve. But it's not going to stop me from buying an Elite anyway).

Alright, I noticed something yesterday I can't believe I haven't noticed before. The 360 stick have little to no resistance during dead zones (only up on the right stick still had barely noticeable resistance as it would bring back away from, unlike other directions. I assume from wear and tear). Meanwhile on the DS4 your resistance starts from the get go and is consistently strong throughout. This is why it seems like the DS4's has more resistance when the overall resistance actually seem about the same when considering this new revelation, just not having that leverage start is what makes it seem like DS4 has more resistance.

This is also why dead zone and accuracy seem worse on DS4 VS 360, because on 360 getting over the dead zone spots require less effort and as soon as you get the resistance in their stick is also as soon as when you get on screen response too. That leverage thing really helps too because it doesn't feel like some kick start feel every time you adjust aim from left to right. And even then, it's not as clear when the dead zone ends on DS4.

^Just remember, there is no way to map the touch pad from the PS4 onto another controller. But, then again, very few games will force you to use it. As long as it's just a matter of pressing on the touch pad like just another button, you should be ok. Also, one thing that does bother me when doing this with my PS4 controller is that you can't use your headphones from the controller. I don't know how it is with other controllers, though.

Thanks for sharing. I would like to know more about your experience with the ChronusMax Plus on your PS4. If it means that using a different controller I can bypass the headaches of de-syncing and lag issues, then I'd be re-enamored with it all the more.

^ I tried to use the remap function a short while ago - it's daunting to say the least. I got my Saturn adapter to be recognized, but for some odd reason, Up on the Dpad acts like I'm pressing the home button as well as Up. Trying to learn how to 'correct' this from the software is crazy-hard, even though it sounds simple. Would be great if I could get it working, then I can get the PS4 version of Sonic Mania and play it with one of my Saturn controllers.

I think the biggest kick in the nads with the Cronus is it should be plug and play, but it isn't. If you want to swap to a different console, you have to plug it into a PC each time and adjust it through the software. Juggling between a PS4 and Xbone just use it with a 360 controller is not fun.

Yeah, that's what prompted me to want to go and buy one per controller so I wouldn't have to remap on the PC every time I switched consoles. But now with all the glitching and de-sync issues, I've almost gone back to square one. You're right, it should be as easy as plug and play; at least with the 4 main controllers it was designed for.

I also ordered another USB to allows any headphone to be plugged in, even my old Turtle beach if I still had that wired connection cord (so I have to get another one). But still have that second turtle beach I just bought and that works too separately from controller, meaning I'm still good to go for chatting with friends and pugs. Though usually for friends because my old TB sounds better for game audio & when I switch TV to PC I can listen to tunes/watch vids too on it, so I don't talk with pugs anymore.

For touch pad, that garbage is actually used in worth whilegames? Waste of controller resources is you ask me. But I recall reading and watching something on the CronusMaxPro having some shortcut keys for it (like for typing and stuff). So I'll look that up if it ever comes up in any of the games I plan on playing; Bloodborne, Dark Souls 2/3, Fallout 3, Witcher 3, Skyrim.


Yeah, I read about lag in older Cronus firmware, but so far they claim they've removed all lag with latest firmware. And I haven't noticed anything yet. I should try my wireless 360 controller and see how that goes. But it's the X-Bone controllers that have the least amount of wireless input lag from what I read (like at least half less lag then DS4, if I recall correctly).

Is that with the latest Cronus to, The CronusMaxPlus? As I don't recall having to do anything to my Cronus other then updating firmware. Was pretty much plug and play from there. Well, Ok, I also had to download a port identifier for my USB hub since it didn't label the ports 1-4, as port 1 and 4 need to be identified for use to get around the Sony 10 min authentication issue.

And what you saying, you prefer the 360 controller over X-Bone one? That would suck, but something tells me it will let me down too by comparison too. Any experience with the Elite? Want to get it, but not sure if in a rush for it anymore since I'm very satisfied with 360 controller for modern gaming (though the D-Pad on my black wired is garbage, but my wireless is the one with that ace twistable D-Pad. Only too bad 360 wired adapter won't work with Cronus so I could hard wire it too).

The boring and frustrating troubleshooting continues. Anybody figure out the touch screen remap yet?

I basically did as buddy said in the video. CronusMaxPlus USB is set to 1 and highlighted purple to signify that mod 1 slot is active. X-Box 360 controller is switched from highlighting player 1 to player 4 on the front. And even the Back button doesn't work for screen/video grabs anymore, also signifying it should be remapped for touchscreen. Yet nothing. The heck am I doing wrong. Maybe it's the game I'm playing, Mass Effect Andromeda. I'm trying to bring up the power wheel so I can select consumables (namely ammo powers so I can set enemies on fire and cause more fire explosions). After playing for so long with the 360 controller again, I don't want to go back to Dual Sock 4. I won't. Will play the whole game like this if I have too.

lol, I finally figured it out after making that post. In Mass Effect Andromeda you have to have you weapons drawn for it to work. Before I figured this out, I was trying another method I was thinking before falling asleep last night, since in one video I yesterday seen mentioned that holding Back button then pressing RB button resets controller. So Basically my idea was enabling PS4 controller for touch screen, then resetting the 360 controller so that I can switch back to 360 controller. This is also what helped me in solving my issue I just explained solution too. But can still be used as another method for touchscreen, so why I'm mentioning it (thought USB hub setup is needed for this method).

Anyway, finally, back to gaming again. And what a relief. As I was thinking of getting other games (namely Whitcher III. I really want to play that next) for PS4, but decided maybe I should give up on PS4 entirely if I couldn't figure this touch screen thing out.

Dude, just get yourself an Xbone for the multiplats. You'd be getting instant access to your controller of choice.

Well that ship kinda sailed. I made too much progress in MEA sp & mp to want to start over (all I've been playing since it's launch). I mean, I could still get an X-Bone and still thinking about it often, I got the cash for it right now. But to be real I should restrain myself and be waiting for the Scorpio since I spent all this cash already on PS4, two games, a Turtle Beach, and now this Cronus thing. And I should also be getting more RAM and better CPUs for my PC too instead.
