Thanks a lot EPSYLON EAGLE! :D
Check it out a quick conversion that i did of the Stage 2 song:

I really enjoyed with this version, think it would not be so difficult for Genesis to have a decent adaptation of this game.

Sam & Max Hit the Road PC to MD - 152 to 59 colors

Seems to me these games would have been fine on Genesis.
Nice thread :D
This further shows how efficient the Mega Drive hardware is, with on screen colors being its only relative weakness but still can deliver great graphics while having the edge over its contemporaries in many other visual aspects (higher resolution, more effective sprite capabilities and better 3D than SNES) if not all other visual aspects (higher effective resolution, better scrolling and sprite capabilities, etc. than PC Engine) leading, when well done of course, to the nicest and most timeless visual standards of its time (only equaled by the Commodore Amiga).
Some of my favorite picks from this thread are the following ones:
The pastel colors remind me of Crusader of Centy, one of the nicest-looking Mega Drive games, with "SNES graphics" except in Mega Drive's higher AND better shaped resolution :D
Again imagine this but in Mega Drive higher resolution? Nintendo was lucky that Capcom weren't focusing as much on Sega's console as they did on SNES cuz otherwise the SNES wouldn't even have been half as successful...

Love this thread. BTW, as I mentioned in the MMX thread, there's a GIMP plugin that can automatically convert images to 9-bit color:
https://github.com/steelwil/gimp-plugin-palette-changer
Of course, as several people have mentioned that's not enough, due to the palette limitations, but it's at least a start. :-)
@retronostalgia: autoconversion usually leads to worse results than doing it yourself. Joe & Mac apparently has autoconverted graphics and it shows, the game looks a bit drab and pales in graphics compared to other Mega Drive ports or exclusives such as Puyo Puyo 1 and 2, Hellfire, Hyperstone Heist (well, not a direct port but still), Ristar or Panorama Cotton.
btw a friend of mine particularly loves this:
:D
That's the nice formula that was most commonly used when porting arcade games in tate to the Mega Drive: 320x224 pixels resolution plus a side bar for the HUD, this leads to good aspect ratio once in 4:3 and makes a bit of room in the playfield by removing the HUD infos from it. Also having a side bar helps keeping the initial HUD art intact (bombs' icon, etc) and can be used to add further infos if needed.
^Thanks, that was the plan. :)
In respone to the SoM one, I didn't convert the resolution there. IIRC because it's smaller on SNES, so you'd have to look at tilemaps and expand the view by rebuilding the scene a bit for MD (or take multiple screenshots and stitch them together) and that takes more time. I guess the added contrast could be perceived as a change in resolution as it looks sharper.
I didn't try 9-bit auto conversion in Gimp, but based on doing it in paint.net, it's not as accurate as the rgb values Tiido provided in this thread. Auto-conversion with that custom palette in paint.net is better, but it prioritizes hue over brightness so you generally have to make a bunch of adjustments anyway.
That's a good move :D
That would be some extra works but this could be nice if you manage to do at least one mockup this way. With Secret of Mana but even more interesting with Mega Man X as the Mega Drive increased resolution would be particularly welcome in that game.Quote:

Thank you Yohko16!
In an alternative 90s the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis got a accurate port of one of my favorite games ever with the same feel, accurate controls and the sword fight engine from the Apple II/MS-DOS instead of the sucky controls from the 2 versions programmed by Domark.

OFF: SEGA CD version have very accurate controls and even a speed select option (that was great for pros)
OFF˛: Reading "The Making of Prince of Persia" Jordan Mechner mention that Sunsoft was interested to port Prince of Persia to the Mega Drive and Famicom (probably based on Asian version by Arsys) right after the Aplee II original version (early 1990) Broderbund declined... DAMN!!!
:D
And thank you too for doing these great mockups! This makes me think that I should distribute some rep, which is what I just did ;3
Your Prince of Persia mockups looks great! This makes you wonder how they managed to do the princess's room so ugly and without even torch lights in the Mega-CD version >.>
Ye, aside from that princess's room, the Mega-CD port seems good with fantastic audio (great music and some neat sound fx).Quote:
