I've recently been paying attention to VGChartz.
The things I learn every day. So, like, based on the sales of the consoles alone, albeit pretty close, did the PS3 win that Gen, then?
Anyways. Looks like a good topic to discuss. Maybe in the end, it may even shed some light on what truly is "rare" versus "highly sought after".
Seems like numbers are wrong, aren't they?
There's something just wrong about all this.
VGChartz numbers should always be taken with a grain of salt. Unfortunately though many times they're the only numbers we have to go by.
Though I'm pretty sure that Genesis number has been debunked numerous times. There's an article from 1998 discussing things like the end of the Saturn, the upcoming Dreamcast and upcoming Genesis 3 that states the Genesis had sold 20 million units in the US up to that point.
I think that the big question mark was Nintendo's numbers being posted for North America. It has been said that they called it "Americas" which would mean that they included South America in those numbers.
Usually I have seen that MD/Gen sold ~34millions.
It's not including Post-Soviet market. Ooh, baby, I have theory that Mega Drive outsold SNES because of Mega Drive clones. Like, every second person (I'm exaggerating, but still) had Mega Drive in 90's Russia, Baltic states, Poland, Ukraine and so on. And 85% of these people didn't knew that they are buying clone systems.
This is interesting. I've always had the impression that the NES was only overtaken by the PS2 and the DS, and it's strange to me that it sold more in the US than in Japan.
Next 3 consoles:
Atari 2600: 27.64
Xbox: 24.65
GameCube: 21.74
Japan isn't really a huge country.

That's a licensed product. It's like saying the Atari 2600 Flashback counts towards the sales of the console.
