Yeah. Short version is they ran out of space on the cartridge, and didn't want to pay more for a larger size. They had to abruptly cut the final level, amongst other things. Factor 5 says they're sitting on the full rom, even offered Nintendo to release that one on the VC instead of the original retail version, but Nintendo's VC policy was against things like that at the time.

Pffft, hahaha. I honestly don't understand these emulator machines either.

I figure they're great for younger audiences, but do they really care? The majority have to be people who want to see how many different ways they can pay for a bunch of games that they probably already own anyways. It's got to be all about the novelty with these things...

And Star Fox 2 as a selling point is mute if anyone's actually played it. I have, it's alright, but otherwise it is a half step up from the first, and too many steps back from 64 to bother with.



Also retro-emulator consoles. Why the hell do people bother with those things?

I like Star Fox 2, but I initially scoffed at its inclusion as well, then after I heard the "final" prototype that was released over a decade ago is only about 95% complete, I suddenly became curious about this version, since it's supposedly the final product with a bit more content and more gameplay elements, according to Dylan Cuthbert. I am curious about this "randomization" he talks of, since the most complete prototype has a random planet order at least.

Also, I fully agree with Cuthbert's sentiment here:

I own the cartridge of X, and it seems quite fun, but later on in the game I have trouble figuring out exactly what I'm supposed to do. There was an English prototype (which I have the ROM of), but it's an earlier, incomplete version. I hope if Nintendo does a smaller original GameBoy with built in games that they'll have the English X on there.

Also, even if I think it's stupid that it's still a limited edition product, I'm glad they're at least making it a big point this time instead of constantly promising more restocks, only to pull the plug when demand is at its highest.

Supposedly, the Star Fox 2 being included is more complete then the ROM that's floating around on the internet.

I used this online guide when I played through it years ago. Be warned, the final mission is ridiculously difficult!

But it's still probably one of my favorite Game Boy games, and I'd love nothing more than to see it get released stateside, be it Gameboy Classic Mini, Switch VC, or otherwise. And throw in Mother 3 while you're at it, will ya?

Nope, the 95% complete one was when Nintendo decided to pull the plug (probably just missing bugfixes?). The prototype we have is supposedly much earlier.

not many people kept their old hardware like many of us did - those that did (or find em cheap) prolly don't like stretched out composhit signal on their HDTV's. these (if you can find em) offer a cheaper alternative for many, i'd imagine.

personally, i'd love to have a game room for my classic/SD stuff and keep only the HD stuff in the living room with the TV, maybe having a few of these on the side for options. god knows i'd rather play an everdrive on real hardware most times, but i get the desire for the option.

Every time I see one of these things, be this SNES mini or a Raspberry Pi or whatever, I think it's cool at first but then I realize it doesn't offer me anything that my laptop won't already do better. About the only fauxback consoles I see a purpose for is the Intellivision Flashback if only for the controllers.

It's gonna be exciting to see people trying to extract the Star Fox 2 rom.

Now if only SD2Snes actually played Super FX roms.

Thanks for that! I tried to find a guide for it back when I first bought and played it, but couldn't find anything. Now I've got to give the game another shot. :)

I hope they're successful, because it's ridiculous for it to be exclusive to this system. If Nintendo were smart, they'd later on release it on the Switch VC service whenever that comes to fruition, since then it would be within their policies of "released titles only".

I'm interested in the Colecovision Flashback. It includes controller inlays that are hard to find.

Very true, though I think Nintendo has begun to relax that policy, as we saw with Earthbound Beginnings. (That example being the exact "Earthbound Zero" prototype rom that had been leaked over a decade ago.)
