Despite this being a Sonic Mania review, the first part talks about Genesis games. Whoever wrote this, fuck him.

With "Sonic Mania," that long losing streak is finally broken. Not only is "Sonic Mania" a good Sonic game, it's a good game period.

But Sonic Mania runs at a blisteringly fast 60fps making it feel more modern and smooth? The 3 Genesis games run at 60fps you fucking hack

Business Insider is a junk website anyways which copies and pastes press releases and advertises them as "news" - just so it can appear on News aggregator websites such as Google news. And then you obviously have these no name "experts" who will try to drum up a bit of controversy to get hits to the website. It's not like his opinion will deter anyone from buying the game - who is he again?!

Maybe the author played the original game on an @games clone? Could explain the seemingly lack of speed as compared to Mania and of course the sound is borked on those clones. Either way, I don't see how the original Sonic games could be considered as bad games? I'm talking about the first 3 specifically on Genesis.

sonic mania feels modern with snappy controls?!? It's the same fucking gameplay and graphics (minus special effects here and there and more Colors than genesis) someone who never played a sonic game would enjoy sonic 2 as much as mania

In comparison to the sequels I find Sonic 1 to be nowhere near as enjoyable, but it's a good game in it's own right.

Although i'd rather play Castle of Illusion or Quackshot over Sonic 1

I don't know if it's the nostalgia talking or what, but Sonic 1 is still ace in my books. Very well designed game. Castle of Illusion and Quackshot who?

...All 3 are full of shit. Reason why their credibility in the gaming industry should be at zero.

Every single article spewed forth by any entity from either of those mentioned above is coming from a clickbaity, yellow-journalism maniac, hipster-wannabe, sensationalist imbecile. Their opinions are as relevant to gamers as Starbucks is to people who don't drink coffee.

Is it me, or is it getting downright fucking annoying with these Nintendo fanboys with no real knowledge of Sega hardware or games plaguing the internet with their one-sided, self-serving diarrheal reviews of Sega games? Especially imbeciles who never even really played most of these games bitd to begin with.

For me it's basically.. Sonic 1 is a real slow game, like very very slow. The sequels include a lot of platforming elements but remember that Sonic is about speed and busting out well timed jumps and combo badnik hits. Sonic 1 regularly stops this dead to bring the pace way back down, the 3 act per zone structure means you regularly see the same graphics, hear the same music and fight the same enemies and challenges, and Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone are more ballaches than real fun levels I love tackling, and the special stages are nowhere near as fun as Sonic 2 (even though Sonic 2 special stages are a damn pain) and Sonic 3s.

Is it a good game? Yeah of course. It's just that the sequels improved so much that if I want to play Sonic it's bottom of the list really, although i'd pick it any day over Sonic 3D or Chaotix.

And come on, Castle of Illusion is great. Let's not be silly.

And some folks accuse us Sega folks of being fanatical. The author of that tripe on Business Insider has obviously never played a Genesis game on a CRT in his life, let alone a Sonic game.

Yeah, I will concede that Sonic 2 didn't age that well in terms of visuals or level design (though it's far from a 'bad' game per se), and Sonic 1 had its fair share of annoyances (it was the first in the series for cryin' out loud), but Sonic 3 & Knuckles rectified all these issues (and added a few new ones, but I won't complain since most of the new ones are pretty funny IMO). And all three still play very well in their own right - AND at a glorious 60 fps.

@ Gogogadget: At least no-one put down Kid Chameleon. :D

It gets worse when most of those fantards are dumb-ass kids who've never even played a non-Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft game in their life, and those that have, never played it on anything other than a cellphone touchscreen or a cheap, blurry flatpanel TV. I'd wager they've never set foot inside a (good) arcade either.
