To me, it's not the Mario games that's overrated, it's the Zelda series
I don't know about an entire series that can be considered overrated. A couple of games, maybe.
Not in the least.
I find this funny since I'm playing it right now. Been annoyed for nearly a decade when I couldn't find all the stupid flags and templars when I rented it on GameFly, and the current XBL sale for $5 was enough for me to try and rectify that. It's a horrible game, but I think most people understood that. I don't think "overrated" works when a game is largely considered to be bland garbage. Unfortunately, hype ensured it sold well regardless of eventual quality (a la No Man's Land), which assured a sequel. Now Assassin's Creed II was excellent, and it deserves every bit of praise it received. Taking in the entire series, I can't look at what are mostly good to great games and call the franchise overrated with only one real dud.
Besides the namesake and obvious gameplay elements, they have absolutely nothing in common. They all span the exploration of different cities. It is a fantastic series and a welcome addition to my game room every time a new one gets released.
Black Flag is really good. 1, 2 and 3 are boring as fuck though.
3 was the most boring for me, but still enjoyable. Black Flag remains my favorite (and before that it was 2, with Brotherhood and Revelations a close 2nd and 3rd, respectively). Unity was good, but then again, I played it way after all the bugs got fixed. But of the two released the same date, I enjoyed Rogue way more. It had way more gravitas. Syndicate is a masterpiece, imo. But so was Black Flag. Again, just my opinion. And Black Flag has so much of the history and lore with which I grew up, that it added that additional treat and personal touch to my gaming experience. That is why it remains No. 1 for me personally. I actually went to London just after playing Syndicate (a couple of weeks before its release). And I found myself looking for all the different sites and buildings I could remember from the game. Also a real treat. Same thing happened to me when I went to Italy. And although I played Unity after my trip to Paris, I still savored every moment I played that game, reminiscing of all the beautiful sites. Part 1 was the first one, and it had less connections to the real world than the rest, but it still was a magnificent game for its time. It was to be a Prince of Persia game in HD. Also a magnificent series.
Well, I prefer SMB 3 to SMW, but I don't know if that makes World overrated. I'm not a fan of Mario 64, but that doesn't mean I think it's bad or that the people who like it are bad... I just don't care for it.
I do think the cult of personality that springs up whenever a new Mario (or Zelda) game is released is a bit ridiculous, but the Mario games, by and large, are good, with many moments of greatness.
Come to think of it, NSMB felt like a step back from SM64 in the number of move sets Mario has. Mario Vs. Donkey Kong for GBA is more sophisticated in that regard than NSMB, I think.
