More moves a characters has also has an invert affect on level design and game balance. ie, the more flexible a character is, the more skilled a developer has to be at nice tight level design and proper difficulty balance. So more isn't always better.Quote:

Super Mario World remains for me to be overrated. The levels are long and not varied. I don't want to go through a Boo House for the 5th time, or play Donut Hills over and over again. I think the game needed a few more environments. I think Super Mario 3 deserves the praise it gets, its just a little too long and needs a save feature. Seeing as Zelda had one, its surprising that SMB3 doesn't.
Super Mario World hands-down. Not the best platformer in the series, let alone of all time.

Mario 2 (US) is one of my favorites. I'd put it right behind SMB3. Yeah, SMB3 is quite large. The whistles really help out though.Quote:

And as far as dismissing SMB2 as a rom hack goes, that means that countless of major games (Sonics, Majora's Mask, DKC, etc) that use the same engine are as well, let alone things like fighting or puzzle games.
One of the reasons people dismiss SMB2 without giving it a chance is because it has the same assets as the original, which it doesn't, aside from things like some of the sprites and maybe some smaller background elements. No different than some Sonic and DKC games.
The difference between Sonic 1 and 2 is way more noticeable than between Super Mario Bros 1 and 2 JP despite both cases being sequels that reused the engine from the first game. Both add new things, but in the former the changes are way more significant. I guess that having completely new looks for levels helps (while SMB2J looks like a quick sprite swap... and for the most part, it's the case in terms of graphics). Also if you play as Mario then SMB2J doesn't really play much different from SMB1 aside from some new obstacles.

Sonic 2 has unique levels and music, two new characters, more levels, entirely new concepts, gimmicks & bosses. Majora's Mask is similar in style to OOT (and reuses the Link model, right?) but is a totally different game, entirely different tone and concept, new playstyle. DKCs sequels again, very similar graphics, new characters, new level gimmicks.
SMB2J? The tileset is changed, the levels are much harder. New level concepts? Nope. New music? Nope. New character? Nope. He's just playable in 1 player mode now, since 2 player mode was actually removed anyway.
It's the bare minimum amount of work done for something to be considered a sequel.
Touche. It's a real sequel, I'll give it that. It's just the equivalent of an actual company putting out a ROM hack and calling it a sequel. I just greatly dislike Lost Levels, as I think it's a terrible game all-around. The level design is frustrating and it offers nothing new to the original game. It's good for what it was released as in the US, "The Lost Levels." But calling SMB 2 not a legitimat sequel to me is ridiculous and downplays how good the game is, even if it's a reskin. I don't get why people are ready to deride Super Mario Bros 2 for being Doki Doki Panic, and not Lost Levels as being the EXACT same game as Super Mario Bros 1, but way more difficult.Quote:
